    July 21: Chanting of mantras:

One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular. Focus cannot be achieved without controll over the senses .. As it believed that the 5 jnanendriya’s , 5 karmendriya’s , Manas which is an ubhayendriya along with atma and Buddhi together are responsible for jnaanotpatti ie gaining of knowledge. Chanting of mantras channelizes one’s energy towards god which links all these factors to each other and fills us him up with divine peace and calmness.. Sadguru deva has given a us such a beautiful opportunity of listening to the Vedic chantings during the morning Sri chakra puja in Mysore ashram.. An example for us all..   Jgd.. Puttugam

Mananāt trāyetīti mantrah…. chanting mantras protects us. In this quote Sri swamiji is explaining how it protects us. Our sense organs and the six internal enemies are the root cause of all our problems along with ego. Once the sense organs are controlled, the mind is unwavering and focused on anything we want to achieve. That is why Sri Swamiji makes us all chant Mantras milliions of times, even though some of us are not very inclined to chant. By chanting the mantra with concentration on the God/Goddess, we can certainly develop laser like focus. There is nothing attainable in this world if we have enough focus. Jaya Guru datta Puttuji. Om Srīmātrē namaha.

    Jai Guru Datta!

Sri Appaji, thanks for blessing us with this wonderful message. Many devotees, who have been spiritually inclined for years are still not sure, how to do Japam (chanting of mantra or mantras).

All devotees need to know, that chanting of some mantras has to be ONLY through initiation from the Guru, but when our Sadguru commands us to chant a mantra, like Om Namo Hanumate Namaha, told in a public gathering, no other special initiation is needed.

There are various rules that need to be followed when doing Japa, but unless the person doing the Japa, does not have a clean heart and pointed focus, the Japa has least affect for himself.

After doing any Japa, it is always recommended to absorb the vibrations for the next 30 mins to an hour, and not to talk much.

Sr Swamiji, we all, your devotees, will work for your Divine Maha Sankalpa and chant any mantra bestowed upon us.

Sri Swamiji, the musical tone in this message is from the bhajan on Sri Raja Rajeshwari, the divine mother whose grace needs to be on all with your divine blessings.

    Sri Guru Datta!

Jaya Guru Datta! I believe this is not just a mere saying of our beloved Pujya Appaji but something that each of us can truly experience. It will be hard to start the chants in the beginning due to our fickle minds but just forcing ourselves to make it a habit helps tremendously (“small beginnings can have great endings” – Appaji’s MMS) in terms of Increased focus, less stress, reduced blood pressure, helps to handle any type of work pressures etc and mind will be at peace.

Sri Swamiji instructs us to chant mantra during Kriya Yoga pranayama practice also to make those more effective and beneficial in measuring the inhale and exhale durations. There are plenty of mantra chanting CDs (‘Dhyanam’ series of 4 CDs) available for purchase in Sri Swamiji’s most divine voice, that we can use during meditation.

Thank you Appaji for taking the time and producing so many CDs, DVDs etc and these daily doses of beautiful MMSs!!!
    Om Namo Hanumathe Namah!!!

Nice message Appaji. Chanting of Mantras is very important and also very helpful to mankind. By continuous chanting of the mantras and sacred hymns we will be purified by our soul and thoughts which will make our spiritual journey very easy. Thanks to Sadguru.

  1. Lucky are those who have received Guru Mantra from Pujya Sri Swamiji. I remember as a kid in 1980 when my Upanayanam took place, Appaji took me to Katte (Puja Place) in the thatched prayer hall of those yester years. Put me on his lap and chanted the Gayatri Mantra as Upadesha in my ears. he gave me the Sandhyavandana Patra and placed His right palm on my shaven head. It was a magical experience which gave pure joy and bliss. From that day onwards, Appaji has stressed on the Mantra Japa on many occasions. Thanks to Appaji. We all have a living Sadguru to look up to and to have received the Mantra directly from Him, the God Himself.

Mantras helps me a lot, but when hearing it from Swami Ji it gives me a bigger boost. Mantra’s had more effect and within the mantra I feel Swami Ji giving fresh energy to overcome obstacles. Till now I am still surprised to feel his Darshan and I hope that everybody can enjoy it and get his blessings.

    • Anand. T on July 22, 2012 at 8:43 am

    Jaya Guru Datta!

Mantra is a particular name for God/Goddess, it is a form of prayer, and it is the repetition of sacred whereby one gains power. If one repeats a Mantra conscientiously and reverently one attains to purification of thought. It is stated that faith moves mountains; the same could be said about a Mantra.

Here is a very simple illustration of how it builds up power: A violinist can play a certain note on a violin. If he just touches on the note he only makes a sound, but if he keeps on at the same note he can cause a glass to shatter and crumble because playing on that note has induced a vibration in the glass which eventually becomes more than the elasticity of the glass can handle, and so the glass breaks. In the same way a Mantra increases the vibrations. All sounds and words can influence matter, can even influence inanimate objects. Mantras influence the matter according to the thoughts of the human mind.

Swamiji YOU are saying through us,
For giving this opportunity to us, thank YOU Guru Datta! Thank YOU Puttuji!

    Sri Guru Datta!

    Sri Guru Dattatreyaya Namah.
    Sri Matre Namah.

Vielen Dank für Deine täglichen Botschaften für den Tag.

    Sri Guru Dattatreyaya Namah.
Regardless of the environment, the chanting of mantras inspired and frees the mind.
May we not respond today on the emotions which occurs to us from outside (water coming from the right/outside to the left/inside – although this is a great slow-motion), but be focused on the richly decorated deity within us.
The chanting of mantras is just beginning outside, then comes as devotion to the deity (to her feets).

    • Shyamala Mruthinti on July 22, 2012 at 11:42 am

    Pujya Sri Swamiji,
I chant the Guru Mantra Given to all of us on Gurupurnima day few years back : Sachidananda Rupaya Krishnaya Krishna Karine, Namo Vedanta Vedyaya Gurave Buddhi Sakshine & Om Namo Hanumathe Namah. Sometimes I chant by lighting the lamp and keeping a crystal (given by Appaji)in front of the deepam and gazing at the light through crystal with eyes closed.

I was so fortunate to take Kriya Yoga classes directly from Appaji in 1994 when He came to Augusta. From childhood one question which intrigued me was to find out who God is…male? female? Krishna, Rama, Christ or Allah? This confusion was due to Christian school which I attended and beloning to staunch Brahmin family my grand father used to do Japam every day for several hours with such composed posture and I wondered what he must be seeing and experiencing. I would go on balcony and tried to do meditation following him. My grand father died and when I was in my teens I got a strange dream where my grand father said that God is waiting in the temple (pointing to huge temple) to meet me and he said I have to go alone. I was all confused and even thought what if I see Christ…then I have to change religion?. The next minute I was inside this temple and there was no one there. The temple was an empty hall with thousands of mirrors and I could see myself, but from one of the mirror a glowing sun from outside was reflecting brightly. Within seconds every mirror had these suns and next minute there were no mirrors or suns or me. There was light and light everywhere. It was as though I was in the middle of sun, yet as cool as Himalayas. I could not feel my body and I became the light and I was floating.
When I asked my mother the meaning of the dream..she said God is Omnicient, Omnipotent, All Pervasive Cosmic Energy.

Well….after many years during Kriya Yoga lessons our Sadguru Shri Swamiji came to each one of us holding a long crystal and asked us to close our eyes and focus. He touched me on my forehead with the shiny crystal and I saw and experienced the same light and coolness which I experienced during dream state!
I was floating in that light for nearly ten minutes. I was perplexed, shocked, overjoyed and could not beleive what I was experiencing. I wrote to my mother about this experience and she wrote back saying ” He is Sadguru, Do not leave Him!”. After that she would always end the letter with a paragraph about Appaji
which she used to see on TV and read until she died.

My family is so blessed to have Pujya Shri Swamiji as our Sadguru!

    We all love you Appaji,

    Shyamala Mruthinti, Ph.D

    • Niran on July 22, 2012 at 11:43 am

Chanting the given mantra is greater than everything else put together. Whilst chanting the mantra, no other thoughts enters your mind. That resonates our body and tunes it with our satguru. What greater gift can our satguru give his sisha.

Jaya Guru Datta, Though I was chanting mantras from my child hood I have learnt the correct pronounciation of chanting of Mantras and corrected my pronounciations from Pujya Appaji’s chantings of Kavachams, Guru Geeta, Graha Stuti, Lalitha Sahsranama and Vishnu Sahasranama chantings. For me, Pujya Appaji’s Guru Geeta chanting improved my focus and completely healed myself on hearing atleast 5 times everyday when I had car accident. Thanks Appaji. Sri Guru Datta.

Jai Guru Datta! Many years back during Navaratri’s bhajan-session, Sadgurudeva announced a mantra in public. Through His glance I understood that it is good for me and as it is rather short and easy to pronounce it suits me very well. While chanting, I became angry against my mind because it always finds some issue to think about instead of being with the mantra.I insisted and with Swamiji’s grace the mantra helped to come back to the center and to concentrate what is worthwhile to concentrate upon – God.in the form of Sadguru. Om namo Hanumate namaha.

    • on July 22, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Jaya Guru Hanuman, Sri Swamiji has always encouraged us to chant mantras or write mantras continuously. Through this message we understand the reason behind it. Self control is one of the toughest things to develop. Mantra chanting helps us develop self control, prevent the monkey like mind from becoming fickle and energize our body from the chanting of the beejaksharas embedded in each mantra. From a personality development perspective as Sri Swamiji says that when we chant mantras focusing on the qualities of deity in the mantra it will help us imbibe the qualities. This is a way to positive thinking. We can also see how this message is related to Swamiji’s earlier MMS message:

“Cultivate noble thoughts in the mind. Express them in pleasant words. Reflect them in your actions. The way to heaven is this.”

    Om namo hanumate namaha

    • on July 22, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Chanting has become a very soothing way for me to fall asleep. If I wake up during the night, I reach for the mala and chant until I fall asleep again. It much better to chant a mantra then to toss and turn with other thoughts. It raises the energy and vibrations. Many times I fall asleep chanting the mantra and then I wake up and I am still chanting the mantrawith beads in my hand! Bizarre! But it feels right…JGD Happy SUN day and thanks to you Swamiji!

You have given us this mantra Om namo Hanumate namaha, so that when we chant with our mind and attention focussed on Hanuman, we will stop thinking of useless things and concentrate on Hanumanji, who is none other than Sadguru deva.

    • on July 23, 2012 at 5:08 am

Truth is re-instated yet again!! I can personally give a lot of examples to support this message.

    1. This incident was when I was doing my masters. That was the time when I was getting used to the guru parampara (though I used to tag along with my amma right from my birth). It was the time when Guru Gita album was released and I still cant comprehend what got me listening to it. I bought a copy of the album and the little book that came with it. I started listening and slowly I was able to chant it myself, without the book. I had a secret wish and I had it fulfilled just by chanting it. Alas, that time, my prayers used to have a reason and a personal gain. Nevertheless, the power of Guru Gita was revealed to me when I met Appaji and He granted me that wish even without me mentioning it or asking for it. Today, I listen to Guru Gita as a daily routine, so what if it is in office 🙂

    2. Vishnu Sahasranamam, I was dying to listen to it in Appaji’s voice. He granted that wish and it was available as a CD. But, my laziness and complacence never let me listen to it. It was very recently that I started listening to it, this I listen on my way to office. Trust me Appaji, this mantra opens up the mind and makes it to absorb and focus on what I am doing. Timelines at work are no more stressful. Really, it is th easiest way to get your mind focus on your tasks.

    3. Shatashloki Ramayana: What to say about this world famous Mantra?? Anything said so far is understated. Appaji alone can state its importance. But yes, it has been a savior time again across the globe. Whether it were earthquakes or hurricanes, their impact was minimal without casualties. Ayodhya trip is enough example of its impact and importance. Personally, I was going through a very tough challenge in my life. It was like a blessing to me when I was asked to come and help at the Information center with playing SSR. The whole effort had a tremendously positive experience on me. I turned out to be very cruel to myself and became very impatient. SSR was the only avocation all through and believe me. if am a peaceful person in mind and heart, it is thanks to SSR. If people do see that I have mellowed down it is only because of SSR. I cannot state enough the impact this mantra has had on me and my family. My doggie too loves SSR ( no joke here)!

    4. Kavacha Manjari: What can I say about these gems? They are invisible shields (kavachas) that truly save you from anything that is negative. They were difficult to read and chant along with the CD. But guess, it is HIS grace that today, I can chant them without any difficulty. Aditya Kavacham is special to me and Shiva Kavacham is the most difficult, yet very captivating.

Thank you for the Music, for giving it to me (ABBA said so)!! I can repeat it here for my beloved Sadguru. He is the only force that keeps me going. Thank you Silent teacher!! I owe everything to you. JGD!!

    • on July 23, 2012 at 5:09 am

OH!! How can I forget to mention about Om Namo Hanumate Namaha. I can write about the impact, but to really experience the effect, one should listen/write/mentally chant.
Thanks Appaji, for blessing us with some of the most impactful mantras. They are such valuable anti-depressants, anti-insomnia, anti-anger pills that all we need to do is spend a couple of hours with them, best part is they can all be playin in the background and we can carry on with our businesses without getting “disturbed” literally!!

    • on July 23, 2012 at 6:06 am

Jgd…. That’s why Appaji Always give us New Mantra’s to Chant… Unknowingly he’s Blessing us to Control our sense & Improve our focus…. We are very Lucky Appaji…. Amazing Creation …. Jgd

  4. JGD.Manava, the personification with mind,is prone to the actionful mind. The strength of mind is fuelled by sensory organs. The thoughts emanated out of gathered knowledge activates not only the mind but also tend to further activation of karmendriyas leading to loss of peace. The best antidote is Mantroccharana, chanting of mantra syllable by syllable with concentation on each of it.O!Appaji you are so Graceful on us to sow on us thro’ your Mantropadesa to protect us from the vagaries of this devil, the mind.JGD

    Jaya Guru Datta..

Humble prostrations to Parama Pujya Appaji, the God Himself. Any Hymn/Mantra on any diety with thoughts on Him gives a very cherishable and unique experience and helps to have a communication with Him. The chants of vedic boys and ashramites during Srichakra puja or any other major ashram festivals and a small stroll next to our ashrama veda patashala where the wonderful veda students do their prayers is a treasure to cherish and appreciate the contribution and care of our beloved Appaji. Be it the live experience or listening to various chants thru’ CDs or the personal participation in chanting these mantras given by Sadguru Sri Swamiji, experience is unique. Discipline, Concentration, Focus seems to be a proven differentiators for the people who became extra-ordinary from thier small beginnings and this message/video, i feel, re-emphazies the need and importance for us and the generation next to realize this and benefit ourselves…

Praying His Holiness to bless us with that focus and use the Treasure House that He has been blessing us with..

  5. Jai Guru Datta,
I have been listening to Kavacha Manjari every morning and evening for the last two and a half years and then in the afternoons as well for the last more than 6 months. It has sustained me in the couple of set backs we faced and came out of them. Little over a month ago my husband was not feeling well and called me to take him to emergency, before starting the car I put on Kavacha Manjari on my IPhone, I reached from my office to his office without delay and while on our way to hospital he realized he was having heart attack. I panicked just for a second and prayed to Swami Ji saying please help and he did. We reached the emergency quickly, doctors attended to him right away and confirmed the heart attack due to blockage of artery. They put the stents right away, all this within an hours time. All this time Kavacha Manjari kept playing on my phone repeatedly and I could hear Swami Ji’s message saying ” Swami Ji will always be with you”. For the few days my husband was in the hospital, Swami Ji’s this message will come on around the time, I would be leaving to go to hospital, turning in the hospital drive or entering his room. With Swami ji’s blessings my husband was discharged from hospital within two days and is recovering.
Swami Ji my humble Pranams to you for blessing us, for blessing all of us with Kavacha Manjari within which you tell us that it is very powerful mantra, we should listen to it morning and evening and Swami Ji will always be us and you were and are. I live in San Diego, I was by myself but was not alone. You were there per your promise.

Jai Guru Datta – dear Swamiji
Thank you a lot for today’s MMS. For me it shows in impressive way how sincere Mantra chanting deprives the thoughtflow and sensory perception of it’s power – capable of keeping them more or less in the background (ever upraising changing waterflow in the background), as the Mantra pulls us powerfully in somehow hypnotic way into the energy of the chosen Mantra, pulling us to merge with this energy.
It demonstrates also clearly the creative power of our thoughts – be it elevating or low ones… that just in the way we think we have immense influence on our development; that Mantra chanting is a very potent “tool”, specialy if the Mantra is given by Sadguru pulling us out of the entanglement of our unwanted thoughts and sense perception, being an example of full concentration…. (your picture in video).
Impressive how all your MMS’s have such a power to transmit not only mental knowledge but to lead us in new inspiring EXPERIENCES – if we dive really into the subject. Commenting them does not only take time, but is an immense help for us !
Inspite of again having had rather difficulties with so many murtis since quite a time, in this video I experienced intensly the powerful effect of concentrating on a powerful radiating murti or picture.
Thank you very much, Swamiji, for your loving guidance. Om namo hanumate namaha

Jai Guru Datta, Appaji. Chanting of Mantras prescribed by Sadguru Deva is infinitely more beneficial, that only Sadguru Deva knows. Following Appaji’s instruction is our duty. We pray to Appaji for strength to chant Hanuman mantra consistently and diligently. Pranams to Lotus Feet, Appaji. Sri Guru Datta.

This message reminds me of MMS45 “Reciting the names of God is both prayer and meditation”. Meditation requires improved focus and control over senses. May lord bless us all with control over senses and improved focus to reach Almighty.

jgd Swami ji thank You so much to show the path of divinity to us, we are blinds after desires. Listening to, and repeatedly chanting God’s name works as miracle to understand the play of God. Word is the witness(Shabda Pramaana) to prove the presence of God. Chanting the meaningful names of God opens the secrets and we can enjoy this game of Maha Maya. Tulasi Dass Ji in Ram Charit Manas says ‘Mantra jaap mum drdha vishwaasaa’ (i strongly believe in chanting the mantras) may i follow Your instructions onhn sgd
