    July 30th : Datta Stavam – 6th Verse

We know our beloved Appaji is the avatara of Lord Dattatreya. Datta himself is the avatara of the trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva ). So His Holiness embodies the Datta, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva principles. This MMS focuses on the Datta and Brahma principles.

The 6th verse of the Datta Stavam, extols the virtues of Lord Dattatreya.. as being well versed in the Vedas ( Brahmanyam ), knowing the essence of Dharma ( Dharma tattvajnyam ), enhancing ( vivardhanam ) the fame ( keerthi ) of His devotees ( bhakta ), and fulfilling (pradham) the wishes ( abhishta ) of those who remember (vande ) him. We get to experience the benefits of these virtues in the kali yuga, because our Appaji lives these virtues every single day. He is Datta swaroopa. We are blessed to be in His grace.

We feel mesmerized as His Holiness sings “Kalatraya Bodhitam Brahma Brahma; Saguna nirguna swarupa brahma; Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma” – meaning – “ Kalatraya ( the three kalas – Past, Present and Future ) Bodhitam ( made known ) Brahma ( God of Creation ); Saguna ( all attributes – virtuous, absolute ) nirguna ( beyond the gunas, beyond attributes ) swaroopa ( embodiment ) Brahma ( God of Creation ); Sarvam ( all ) Khalvidam ( all the times ) Brahma ( God of creation )”. Brahma has created the past, present and the future. He is the embodiment of all attributes, and at the same time is beyond the attributes. He is all.. at all the times”. We know through our experiences that His Holiness is also Brahma swaroopa. We are blessed to be in His grace.

Lord Brahma is self-born. He came into being in the lotus flower that bloomed in a stem that arose from Lord Vishnu’s (Padmanabha) navel. So, it seems very appropriate that this MMS invokes Lord Padmanabha ( Padma – Lotus, nabhi – navel ) in the very beginning. It ends by invoking Lord Damodara ( Daamo – waist , Udara – rope ).. perhaps reminding us of Lord Krishna’s pastime of allowing Mother Yashoda to bind him with a rope around his waist. Likewise, even though our Sathguru is nirguna – having no cord or string – being beyond the gunas, He still allows us to bind him by our love and devotion. He has chosen this avatara – this binding to a form, to a set of virtues and attributes – out of sheer compassion for all of us – his beloved devotees. We are blessed to be in His grace.

The amazing visuals and the mesmerizing rendering of the song “Kalathraya Bodhitam Brahma” by His Holiness makes this MMS an addictive experience. Thankful pranams at your lotus feet, dear Gurudeva for engaging us every day with such divine MMS experiences! Please bless us with the will to live these lessons in our daily life.

    Jaya Guru Datta!
    Your Puttuji.

    Om Padmanaabhaaya Namaha
    Om Damodaraya Namaha

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation PuttuJi. It is our fortune that we have Our Sadguru Deva Sri Swamiji in our life, who is helping us to be on the right path by teaching us all the good qualities like being on the path of Dharma, have compassion and love towards others creatures and humans, how to conduct life, so that in every action that we do, we do it as of form of our worship to our Sadguru Deva.

“kaalatraya bodhitam” the song is mesmerizing and one can forget themselves while listening to this song. Pujya Appaji’s divine voice enters the core of our being and clenses out all the negativities of many lifetimes. The song is just melodious as well as blissful. JGD

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

Datta Stavam is one of my most favorite hymns which extols the virtues of God. Sri Swamiji has provided the detailed meaning of this most beautiful hymn in the most simplest form for us to understand and elevate ourselves.

This verse explains that the highest fruit of dharma is Brahman. Sri Swamiji inorder to make us experiece the highest fruit is helping us understand and implement dharma in our daily lives through these daily MMS messages. Sri Swamiji has taken the essence of all scriptures and vedas and is providing it in the most simplest way possible. God in the form of Guru comes down to earth and teaches us dharma. By following dharma God increases the fame of devotees and also blesses them with what they need. God knows what we want and blesses us with what is good for us. Just like children who are attracted to candy not knowing that it will harm them, we due to lack of discrimination go after things that we find attractive not understanding the pain they will cause in future. Let us all pray for strength, intellect and knowledge in understanding these MMS messages and applying them in our daily lives.

The translation of Datta Stavam is available in many languages and is available in various ashramams of Sri Swamiji across the globe. Below is the online link to purchase the book and dvd in telugu:

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, Datta is so mysterious. I remember when I first came to Baton Rouge, I felt for a while that every where I might look just on the edge of my world there was an ancient presence calling me. In the end, I realized it was Datta, and as you have taught me, He is everywhere waiting to help us and support us the instant we surrender ourselves and our problems to him…I am so grateful that you have brought this great mystery into my life, for the lessons that Datta has given me, for the tests, for the blessings, for the knowledge and experiences. For you….

    JGD Appaji!
Today’s Celestial Message with “Celestial Message” as the background score is simply amazing! It relates to this sloka of Datta Stava so well.
Starting with Sri Padmanabhaya Namah as Lord Dattatreya/Anagha Devi and ending with Appaji as Damodaraya Namaha – the subtle potrayal of Parama Pujya Sri Swamiji as Lord Dattatreya is simply superb. Appaji’s eyes seem to be looking right at us and into us…
Praying to Appaji so that we remember Datta every second..SGD

Every word of Datta Stavam is steeped in wisdom – lessons for how to live as a devotee of Lord Datta. How blessed we are to have that wisdom spread before us by Puttugam. An answer to my prayers and a nudge back to my sadhana of studying Datta Stavam. Thank You! Eternal Love. Jaya Guru Datta.

  3. Jgd my dear Puttuji, your commentary is absolutely superb. One of the first of Sri Swamiji’s bhajans I had heard and it evoked such strong emotions within. I feel truly blessed at this moment knowing that Adiguru Dattatreya is teaching and helping us to follow His path. I prostate over and over to Sadguru’s lotus feet and pray that I become worthy to assimilate all His precious teachings. SGS MMS IS THE BEST. Sri Guru Datta

Appaji you are like Rama and puttuji like hanuman.. You are the god and the devotee yourself.. You are teaching us how to understand you through multiple modes.. We are lucky and blessed… Sri guru datta..

    Jaya Guru Datta!
Lord Dattatreya knows my wishes much better than i do. Sometimes a wish gets fullfilled even before i notice that it was a wish from me. Or it gets fullfilled much better than i could have expected it. So it is better to surrender all wishes to Lord Dattatreya. It remaines for me just to be very very very thankful.

Jaya Guru Datta! The Datta Stavam is like a magic bullet – it’s filled with the magic of Datta Sadguru’s love and compassion. It’s filled with the bond Datta Sadguru shares with His devotees. Sri Swamiji was mentioning in His discourse on Sunday, July 29, right before the bhajans, that no other saint of the stature of Sri Swamiji ties Himself into bonds with His devotees like Sri Swamiji does. Saints are usually recluses, turning away from this world and its beings, focusing only on Godhead. But, our Datta Sadguru while being one with Godhead is taking us along towards Godhead by making us a part of His family. He does this by fulfilling our wishes, giving us support during difficult times and teaching us dharmic values and principles. Sri Bala Swamiji said during His discourse today that Sri Swamiji is always present with us in His subtle form. The Datta Stava helps us discover the subtle presence, nurture and amplify our awareness of this presence and embrace the love and blessings of Lord Datta!

Obeisances to the Holy Lotus Feet of Datta Sadguru!

Puttugam deserves kudos for bringing out to light the hymns in adoration of Dattatreya Swami, Surya, Siva, Sakthi in sabhakti. The bounteous boons of the deities, who are thus adored by the devotees hopefully will be endowed with through the grace of Appaji.

  6. JGD Puttuji! Thanks a Lott for such wonderful video expalining the inner meaning of the sloka from dattastava! And the background music singing’Kalatreya Bhoditam Bramha Bramha …” is my favorite bhajan and whenever I listen to it I feel it is transforming me to some other world!

JGD!! All I know is that Datta Stavam is about Appaji!! Each verse and its meaning can only extol Appaji and HIS grandeur. Trinity and Appaji, are the same. All it takes to realize its impact is a subtle miracle and mind you, those miracles are experiences of a lifetime.
The bhajan is takes me into a trance mode. A strange feeling of happiness, a feeling of being one with HIM, it is awesome!!
Puttuji, as always, your comment was very elaborate and made me see the MMS in your perspective. Your explanations about the names and their origin is a new lesson for me. MMS teach us to mold our personality and your explanations give us those valuable lessons about spirituality, mythology and divinity. Thank you. JGD!

JGD. I have been chanting Datta Stavam for more than 25 yrs. without knowing the meaning fully and it produced numerous miracles. I agree with previous comment by Brahma Ben Krammer. I had Darshan of Pujya Appaji on Jan 1st in Dallas Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple. Got sick that night in the motel and the airlines could not change my schedule as all the flights were full on Jan. 2nd. I chant Dattastavam whenever I could. I started chanting Dattastavam on the way airport in bitter cold, shivering with flu at 5:00 a.m. and after returning the rental car, casually asked the airline clerk if there are any seats availbale on direct flight to Atalanta. He looked in the computer and told me someone cancelled in the last minute and changed my schedule all the way to Savannah. Pujya Appaji being a Datta Avatara is constantly with us and knows what we are doing and what we are going through. Complete surrender at HH Lotus Feet. We are all blessed to see this Lord Datta Avatara in this Janma. SGD.

    1. To remove worldly sorrow and to gain worldly happiness.
    2. To increase devotion, discipline in virtue, and the practice of yoga.
    3. To merge with the deity of the mantra, with no desires.
