  1. The river flows through varied terrain. When it flows between mountains, it does not gloat that it has cut through them. It just flows to the ocean.
When it flows over rocky terrain, those rocks slice the river into small rivulets. The river doesn’t regret having been sliced; nor do the rocks gloat over having cut the river to pieces. The rocks are where they are. The rivulets gather into the river & flow to the ocean.
    Pranams Sathgurudeva!
Pointing to that river, you want us to flow through our daily terrain towards our fulfilment, without regretting our failures or gloating over our successes. We will.
We realize we regret, when our Ego makes us believe we have been downsized to rivulets. We gloat when we believe we are the river, cutting through the mountain. Ego again.
Vasudeva neither regretted being in prison with Devaki, nor did he gloat when crowned King of Mathura. You want us to practice such equipoise. We will.

Jaya Guru Datta! Once in 1999, Sri Swamiji told a small group of devotees to remember who we were in relationship to our Guru, but to also remember that we were also nothing but a speck of dust in the cosmos. I remember the feeling that talk brought, both of strength and pride at being a devotee of Swamiji’s and humility at being nothing really in the great scheme of things. In that moment, Sri Swamiji seemed to reveal that there was a delicate balance we needed to hold between respecting and caring for ourselves and doing so in a humble manner. Again today, He reminds us that we must remain balanced and develop, equipoise no,matter what the circumstances. Thank you for this reminder, Swamiji! Sri Guru Datta!

  2. JGD! How true! We are trying to overcome this state, with Your help! SGD!

Jai Ho Datta Appaji! A wonderful message from Your Lotus Feet. Puttuji’s comments explaining the use of river in the video to illustrate the message is wonderful. Prayers to Your Lotus Feet to help cross these dualities. Sri Guru Datta.

In this drama called life, God plays all the roles. We are only witnesses. While watching a movie or reading a story we identify with the fictitious characters and share their joys and sorrows. We weep uncontrollably for tragic events that occur to a non-existent character, rejoice and jump with joy when something wonderful happens, or detest some imaginary person for atrocities committed. In truth, none of those people even exist. None of us exist either, as independent entities with powers to perform. God plays all the roles, He alone knows why. Yet. we identify with our bodies and minds and make our lives filled with mostly misery caused by arrogance, and to a lesser extent with pride, over our achievements. Swamiji, you alone can show us light. You alone can free us from this illusion and this false sense of identification with untruth. Jaya Guru Datta

We must always be reminded that we achieve things with God by our side, nothing is posssible with God, this is fundamental and we must remember this. Nothing we achieve is done on our own, it is through the guidance and blessings of god in our lives.
We all struggle with Ego many times, but having you by our side reminds us to be humble and practice humility…
Jaya Guru Datta, thank you Appaji for choosing to be in our lives!!!

Jaya Guru Datta Appaji. Aunt Venkamma compared the river Bhavanashini at Ahobilam with a new bride entering her new home with the in-laws. When she finds obstacles in her path, she does not stop to argue and win her point or get discouraged and lose heart. She maneuvers her way around hurdles calmly and races towards her destination, keeping focus only on her duties to preserve the unity and well-being of her new family. There is no room for ego or self-assertion in the unselfish performance of one’s duties. Lord Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, known as Vaasudeva, worshiped in this MMS, as well as Lord Rama, never expressed regret or despair at the misfortunes that came their way, nor showed excitement or sense of jubilation over their victories. They both stand before us, just like our Sadgurudeva, as models for perfect human behavior and attitude. We have so much to learn from them through emulation. Jaya Guru Datta

    Dear Swami AVADHOOTA
Yes APPAJI but what can we do~~~ to kill the ego you gave us a lot of instructions, but to walk this way without to feel guilty or proud, to feel good or bad and also to be authentic, is the challenge. So we swing from side to side, like Ida and Pingala are crossing the chakras and are changing the sides until the reach goal.

Jaya Guru Datta. Datta Kriya Yoga teaches us how to bring the Ida and Pingala nadis into balance. Optimally, once they are balanced, the flow of prana ignites the Khundalini Shakti on its journey up the Shashumna and toward the Sahasrara (crown chakra). As it rises, it pierces each of the chakras which helps us let go of old samskaras as well as those ego attachments that we currently are hanging on to. This divine dance is what eventually brings us into harmony and balance by releasing such ego attachments as regret, pride, fear, resentment, envy, shame, desire etc. Dwelling on such emotions and thoughts only keeps us entangled in the web of ego instead of experiencing the ultimate goal of Self-Realization and Moksha (liberation). Sadguru’s grace is always there to guide us out of this web. But grace follows effort so we must do our part! SGD.

Jaya Guru Datta. Ego makes a person non-starter. The MMS has a profound meaning which signifies the geeta saara as is stated by Appaji. this also teaches us not to worry aboutthe fruit but to continue to do our action as a responsibility towards God and not just any other human being. Thanks a lot Appaji

    • Archana Penukonda on March 26, 2013 at 11:15 pm

Jaya Guru Datta! It is becoming clear that the all wavering of the mind is caused by identification with the body. Ego exists when we think we are different from the divinity that pervades everything. It’s as easy to regret failure as it is to gloat over success. These seem to be instincts ingrained in us. It just shows that ego fills my mind more than I know.
Let me always remember that man is an instrument in the hands of God, that this creation is sustained by God, that real knowledge brings humility, that as long as I have ego, I will never taste the nectar of bliss. Ego is akin to an obstinate demon that takes on many shapes and forms and manifests itself at the smallest opportunity. It temporarily disappears when humility fills our mind, but quickly recovers and takes over.
The Guru’s grace is essential to wiping away ego completely. I hope that some day, I can conquer ego and give up identification with this body with Sathguru’s blessings. Obeisances at the Holy Lotus Feet!

Happy Holi Pranams at the lotus feet of Sri Krishnaswaropa Sathgurudeva _/\_!!

Q&A session of the GNAA NAA BHA YOGA lecture sessions, 2009 (courtesy: oneinfinitezero)

The word Ego implies Aham-kara. Aham-kara is the I-ness that is associated with action (karma). One who has no Aham-kara, sheds the illusion of doership, or rather, never makes the mistake (mentally) of associating themselves with the actions performed by their body. The body is a machine (“Svayam chalita yantra” as Sri Swamiji says in “On Swimming this Ocean” youtube video by Hanuman Hoffmanji). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-126lviZtU

The indwelling being is untainted by the actions of the body, directing and guiding it silently by His very presence. The ignorant assume themselves to be doers. When one loves what they are doing, they forget themselves in dong the action, and thereby live as liberated souls.
Hence, it is very important to leave behind all `Tappatriyas’ (stubborn, blind internal belief systems that make you behave a certain way). Your tappatriyas themselves are the cause of your sin. They blind you to the present. The only way out of this ego trap is Bhakthi. By focusing your mind on Sathgurudeva and selfless seva. As Pujya Sri Swamiji says “I will be with you ALWAYS.”

Sadgurudeva :Follow The Master – Ashram A Yoga land:
Swamiji’s Ashrama is a kind of Spiritual factory or worship. In that work-shop the egos of those that come there are constantly subjected to repair and adjustment. The more frequently they come the more they shed their egos and ultimately, they lose their egos completely and come to realize that they are mere instruments in the hands of Bhagavati
We will remember Puttuji’s explanation -EGO ( Edges God Out). Let Holika Dahan
( Kamadahanam) free us from Evil Ego, and we practice such equipoise with your Grace.
    Sri Guru Datta !!

According to me, Appaji’s MMS 300 has got a deep inner meaning also. Through the photography He is reminding us again how we can reduce the Ego in our life and if not it gloat over our success in life. The river flows through various terrain and in spite of that it’s aim is to reach in the ocean. In otherwords even though when it flows in between the mountains or passing through the rock, it is not bothered and finally reach the ocean. Therefore here it is not showing any ego or pride with the mountain or the rock and in simple way if we think it is doing it’s duty. When it reach the ocean it’s aim is over and that is the success for it. Similarly when vasudeva was in prison with devaki , he neither regretted nor gloat over when he crowned as king of Mathura. From this we can realize that he was not bothered about both which shows he don’t have any ego nor gloat over the success also. Therefore Appaji through this MMS 300 You want us also not to develop ego in our life and our aim is to success only by which we should not develop pride also. In other words by seeing Your valuable , various MMS till now , it is our duty to develop Self realization in our life which we will carry out through Your words and teachings. JGD.

There is a very thin line differentiating between self-respect and ego. One should always lead their life with confidence and self-respect, but not egoistic. May lord bless us all to realise our mistakes due to ego and give us the mind to find solution for ego.
