  1. Pranams Appaji,

You’ve a knack of turning perspectives around. We thought obstacles are our foes.. you made us see them as our friends. We thought plants animals & birds are for Man to feed upon.. and you want us to do just the opposite.. feed them. And you role model those behaviours so we feel motivated to copy.

Datta said he learnt from 24 Gurus.. 12 of them were animals & birds. Datta himself is worshiped in the avadumbara tree. You want us to feed Datta’s Gurus! & Datta himself! What a lovely opportunity!

You taught us “The animate and inanimate are part and parcel of God”. And you want us to offer food to our Creator before we offer it to ourselves.. What a powerful thing to do!

We see your point, our dear Yoga Ganapathi. When we recognize the almighty in plants, animals & birds around us, we begin sensing that divinity within us too.. what a lovely way to get started to live the higher life! We will make the most of this! Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, I love this video, In my lifetime, I have been blessed to live in areas where I have been able to feed the birds and the deer and to get to know the wildlife in my area. When I met Swamiji, I lived in a house on a pond. I could set my clock by the animals that came to drink there and I came to know each one of them–a great blue heron, a racoon and her babies, a skunk, a ground hog and many many deer were my constant visitors and friends. Later, Swamiji moved me to a new location where I lived on a beautiful mountaintop for five years. There, bears, coyotes, hawks, eagles and deer were regular visitors to the fruit and nut trees in my yard. I’ve always had a bird feeder where I could and have found many hours of joy learning the different birds that lived in my yard. Here, in a city apartment, I can’t have that feeder anymore, but I know all of the squirrels that live in the tree next to my stairs and talk to them each day as I come and go from my car. They don’t like my cats and often complain! :} Thank you for reminding us to remember that natural plants and animals around us. They offer such friendship when we are willing to see them and support them…

What a wonderful message Swamiji. The way it is inculcated into us through a Tatva Bhajan showing the nature makes us feel the importance of your message. With reverential pranams.

Jai Guru Datta Appaji – You are verily the silent teacher and this has been validated through multiple MMS messages. You have imparted several valuable messages in the depth of my heart when I silently contemplated on you in meditation. This is one such message which I have received from you and have been diligently following for a while now. For example: There is an intense driver in me that urges me to ensure that all the plants are watered and family at home/guests have enough to eat before I start my lunch/dinner.
The following slokas in Bhagavad Gita elaborate & sanctify the Divine role of Food in our life:
“Annad bhavanti bhutani” & “Brahmarpanam Brahma havir”

Let us make a firm resolve to follow this MMS to the core and follow our beloved Yoga Ganapathi who has been advocating service to plants and animals via various means of Bonsai garden, Animal parks, Tuesday skip-a-meal-and-feed-others etc.
    Sri Guru Datta!

It’s a new aspect for me in my thinking. I reflected, who I could feed before I eat. I live allone in my house and havn’t an animal. But I have some plants. but these plants don’t need a lot of water. I will make it like this: before every eating I will give some feed in my mind to other people. Then I pay an amount at an instution, which helps at people, who have not enaugh to eat. I will try it!

jgd. wHEN visiting Mysore Dattapeetham, the Love of His Holiness towards Nature is Evident clearly. In the early hours or in the evenings one may see His Holiness among the plants, trees, birds. The MMS shows Appaji in the Nature with comfort. From Animate to Inanimate, all relish the presence of The Universal mother, the Feeder of all.Appaji started a “Share your Food” programe in Dattapeetham.Every Tuesday fasting one time, the saved food is to be given to those who need it more. This is in addition to the Nitya Annadana at all the Ashrama of Dattapeetham.Ashrama of Dattapeetham give Ashraya( place to stay) but also a Morsel of Food.
Human may forget the giver of Food, the other living do not forget.Take any animal even a Lion they will not forget the Hand that Feeds them.

  4. Jaya Guru Datta. Divine Mother Sri Swamiji turned me from a meat eater to a vegetarian. He never told me or gave me instructions like that, but it was Him even though I don’t know how to explain it. It was exactly one year ago today that I gave up meat eating. Now I will feed another before feeding myself. I am so grateful for these lessons and transformation. I love you and will surely follow. Sri Guru Datta

  5. Jaya Guru Datta. Beautiful and illuminating explanation. Sri Guru Datta

    • Manu on November 1, 2012 at 2:53 pm

    Jai Guru Datta,
I once heared this story about what is hell: in heaven there´s a big long table wich is packed with food and there are very long spoons, so long that one can impossibly put the food into ones own mouth, so everybody is feeding the person across the table and everybody is happy. In hell there´s the same table, with the same food and the same spoons but people are starving because they´re trying to eat with the long spoons by themselves and they can´t reach their mouth.
For me personaly it is a great realisation that I don´t need to stay hypnotized by my own belief about my own needyness. If I stick to the belief that I have nothing to give because I´m not full myself, it is so. But I can decide to give and see that I can give and that makes me full. This of course is inconvenient for the ego. Please, Sri Swamiji forgive this ego for it´s limiting believes about myself.
    Sri Guru Datta.

Jaya Guru Datta! Powerful song, wonderful explanation by Puttu Gam to understand Appaji’s lesson even better. It’s always nice to watch how lovingly Appaji feeds animals and interacts with them. By giving first to others, we can learn gratefulness for what we get ourselves and a lot of patience, reducing our greedyness to get food. Thank you for introducing the share your food program as a gift both to us and those who need food. Sri Guru Datta!

Jaya Guru Datta. The additional dimension to the perfect advice for the devotees to follow. Appaji, You have already made everyone plan for the future by Share-a-meal program. The thunderous response and the religious adherence to that ‘sutra’ on every tuesday has a wonderful effect on the physical and mental well-being of people, nay, the society. This is another dimension that we are learning today. Thanks a lot Appaji – we shall follow.

    Jai Guru Datta !!

Swamiji always feeds the hungry – there is always Annadana in the ashrama for anybody that comes and is hungry. Even during prayer/rituals, Guru purnima, Datta Jayanthi celebrations during lunch or dinner time Swamiji urges devotees to take prasadam and then re-gather for further proceedings and darshan. Pujya Sri Swamiji is the role model for all of us. He feeds all beings for spiritual and physical development. Our Appaji is our most compassionate GOD.

“You want us to feed Datta’s Gurus! & Datta himself! What a lovely opportunity! ” what a lovely MMS and explanation, Puttuji !! We will do so following Our Yoga Ganapathy Swaroopa Appaji .This Divine MMS reminded me of

Giving in terms of not only food….but giving in our behavior and thoughts as well..Lets us feed others with love and kind/good words as well. Bless me Appaji to implement this one day at a time..feed a living creature before I eat and also whenever I speak let it be with love.

Jai Guru Datta, dear Appaji, You reminded me that food is always more satisfying if shared with everyone…how can i enjoy if someone around me is deprived? This video shows you delighting in feeding a variety of God’s creatures, modeling the joy of sharing in order to sustain the diversity of plant and animal life on our planet….With it, i’ve learned a fundamental principle of dharma and how to create peace on earth. Thank you for making aware of all the opportunities to relieve suffering in the world, and contribute to happiness..Sri Guru Datta…Om Sri Jayalakshmi Mata Namah

    Jaya Guru Datta Puttuji,

Basic necessities of humans is food, shelter and cloths.
Many of us many not know the importance of it as we were never in this situation where we had to struggle for these basic necessities. There are many people in the world who struggle for these basic necessities. Pujya Sri Swamiji is telling, atleast feed another plant, animal or bird.
Thank you Appaji, we will follow the instructions.

Appaji, you are leading us by example. You need us to follow your examples. We will follow them. It is so gratifying to see the happiness in my pet dog’s face everytime he has his meal. It is some intense urge that makes me feed him before I myself eat. My mother too has the same opinion. She always ensures that my pet dog is fed before she eats. It is definitely not a great deal to feed my pet. Going beyond this is what you are expecting. The animals video on vimeo, some of the older MMSs ll bear testimony for your priceless care and concern. I have seen bone and nerve and the current pet labradors of Mysore, I cannot remember their names, Bittu and Swetha, they are all so content being in your fold. You feed Bittu with your own hands. Not just these, you feed so many strangers who come at any given point in time to Mysore Ashram. You have taught us to share our meal on Tuesdays. It is now upto us to practise what you do. Please give us the wisdom to be able to follow you and your examples. Jaya Guru Datta!!

  7. JGD. The concept is to share with others what u take/have,a socialistic phenomenon from Our APPAJI,meant for all ,pasu, pakshi, mrugasu.By this let live others also along with you, universal brotherhood.By feeding others before self feeding gives immense pleasure to the jeeva. This is done in the form of Annadana, before Gnanadana.Sacrificing for the sake of others is also a form of yangya, karmayoga yangya,as preached by Lord Krishna,in dwaparayuga, now by APPAJI,the Dattavadara Krishna.SGD.

this mms brings tears in my eyes as the music reminds me of the first time we visited india and sri swamijis ashram. staying in the hotel next door I loved to feed a lovely calf named gowri with bananas. I love cows and felt deeply touched encountering the indian version of this wonderful being feeding human beings with their milk and all the products we can derive from them. before meeting my beloved sadguru physically i spent some summers in the swiss alps living with cattle, calves and one or two cows we milked in the morning and the evening, sometimes walking for half an hour or an hour time to find her in the vastness of the meadows. milking by hand always felt as a sacred act to me. and making cheese on the open fire from the given milk was a sacred act as well. I was very happy when I came to know that lord dattatreya is always accompanied by the divine cow kamadhenu. the first pictures I saw from mysore ashrama were fotos of the cows living there somebody lovingly sent to me.
however, with a heavy heart I stopped bringing bananas for gowri, as one day I saw her crossing the ooty road as she caught my sight and was nearly overrun by a truck. feeding animals is one of the sweetest feelings I know and with having not so much opportunity to do it physically I hope that giving love, care and mindfulness to the living beings around us may also cover Your intention. Your loving and lovely mms is so striking that I will remember it before taking food.

Another fantastic MMS. All living beings are provided with sufficient food by God, but due to many reasons in the society we live, it is not evenly distributed. May be we can’t change the entire system of inequality in world. But, surely yes, all of us can follow this small step of feeding others within our capability. By doing so, it gives immense pleasure of helping needy and also as a small step for inculcating generous nature within us towards needy. May lord bless us all, not to struggle for basic needs and also bless us with heart and mind to extend our helping hand to the needy.

    • Sarumati on November 4, 2012 at 4:04 am

What a holy habit it is in India, to offer food to the Godhead (idol) first, the first act of the day,
a good beginning. And now this MMS !!!

When I received it, I immediately walked out on my balcony to see, if the birdies had already
got their food, but I could do a lot more.
In our cities people are very often cut off their roots.
We don`t have a garden in which animals are dwelling, the next park is far away … not to
speak of a wood. So, what to do?

It needs a push – like this MMS – to think of one`s fellow beings first, even if one
has an open heart for animals and plants.
This MMS is so catching to me … the lovely landscape … I`m always very much impressed
by the flashing green, and Shri Swamiji`s loving appearance with all the beings .

I`m really moved . Loka samasta sukino bavantu

Feed another before feeding yourself ~ 1 Nov 2012

Simple message yet very important! We work so hard to earn 3 meals a day. There are many beings in this world that do not get even one whole meal a day. It is our duty to share what we have with others who are less priviledged. Sri Swamiji has started Share your food program where every Tuesday, we skip a meal and feed another person or animals or birds. It is such a noble cause that we must all participate in. The satisfaction that is derived from a good meal cannot be compensated by anything else. Many times, we throw left overs into the dustbin and it goes waste. Let us atleast feed this food to the animals and birds. We spend hundreds of rupees on delicious food, ice creams and chocolates. Let us sacrifice that at least once a week, and use that money to feed a hungry one. This humanity, compassion, must be shown by all of us else we are not fit to be called humans! Sri Swamiji performs Annadanna for thousands of people during the Poornima Annadana at Sri Datta Venkateshwara Temple, and in Ashrama, it is Nitya Annadaana. Let us all participate in this wonderful cause and share what Lord Datta has so generously blessed us with! Jaya Guru Datta!
