  1. She (Rājēśvarī) is the cause, source (sambhāvayē) of all creation. When you pray to her, she makes royal divine grace (rājatkr̥pāṁ) a possibility (sambhāvayē). Why waste the chance by reducing that prayer to a petition for lower level (material) benefits?

We know what goes up comes down & vice versa, The pendulum swings both ways as the lamps swing here. That impermanence is Her way of dissuading us from being carried away by our lower nature. We don’t seem to understand this.. inspite of MMS 62, 65, 69 & 126.. because our minds are possessed with self-interest: What is in it for me? So, our prayers remain mundane

Pranams Gurudeva ! We’ll learn to smile at the punishing winters of life like those flowers do. With such resilience, we’ll practice Nishkamya Bhakti like that little child does. If Prahlada could do it, even we can. Being able to do so will be our practice & our prayer to you our Kalikamba in this festival of lights. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, when we surrender the results of our prayers to God, or we pray without concern for ourselves, God so often rewards us in ways we never anticipated. Several years ago, I was feeling great concern for those without food in the world. I had been praying fervently for help for those who were hungry. It was a deep heartfelt prayer. Suddenly, the strangest thing began to happen. People began to feed me! First, I stopped at a restaurant where I had never been one day while I was out shopping to have lunch. When it came time for the bill, the owner told me lunch was free! I didn’t understand and wanted to pay, but he said, no.. A few days later, I wasn’t feeling well and stopped by a local Indian place on the way home from teaching to get a Mango Lassi. I reached in my purse for change and the owner said, “No, we love you. It’s free today.” Then I went home to rest, talked briefly to a friend on the phone and mentioned I wasn’t feeling well. A few hours later, I heard a knock on my door and when I went to open it, there was no one there, but there was a bag full of home made dishes so I wouldn’t have to cook while I was sick….I never forgot that lesson. It taught me that when we pray selflessly, the Divine Mother cares for us in ways we can never anticipate…Sri Guru Datta!

    Genuine Prayer Seeks No Reward

I understand this as a description of the deepest state of prayer, where there can exist no thoughts of any kind whether thoughts of asking for good fortune, or indeed for any circumstances to change according to our wishes. We all see things differently from our own level of human consciousness. How can we presume we know at any time what is best for ourselves, our loved ones, or the world? But we start with our human mind which is so hard to settle, because thoughts race around our heads. I think this could be a good starting affirmation when beginning to meditate, and perhaps if we start with this openness in “seeking no reward”, we would open up ourselves to limitless possibilities for growth of our own consciousness. And this links also to yesterday’s message (30.10.2012) which was: “Follow spiritual practice with complete trust in the Guru “ – because if we sit to meditate with complete trust in the Guru, we would then be truly “seeking no reward”.

Datta Appaji! Our minds are vacillating because we have lost our sense of direction and our sense of destination in this KaliYuga as We firmly believed in the society’s definition of progress & success – measured by material wealth/assets, Career progress, Family status etc. Naturally our prayers center around these lower level aspirations.
Appaji’s teachings help us ‘unlearn’ these definitions and realize that our existence should be based on Service without selfish expectations, Prayers seeking no material gain, Devotion seeking nothing but the Lotus Feet of SadhGuru.
… and we realize that our spiritual ‘progress’ ironically depends on what we give up rather than what we accumulate (material acquisitions).
Pujya Gurudeva – Please make our Hearts your permanent home, so we don’t stray from our paths ever. Sri Guru Datta.

Great reminder to develop ‘nishkama bhakthi’. Pujya Appaji has said many times that if we pray asking for certain things and wishes to be fulfilled, God will grant ONLY those wishes and we also have to face the consequences that come along with that wish. But if we simply pray without seeking any reward, God will grant everything that we need at a time that is appropriate. A very powerful message by Appaji and a very hard one to practice also as we live in this materialistic world. My dear Appaji, please bless me to develop the nishkama bhakthi towards YOU.

Visuals and the background music/bhajan in the video are awesome!! Jaya Guru Deva Datta!!!

Absolutely true…. Genuine prayer is essential for the well being of the entire universe where in we are part of it. Only if our surroundings are fine all of us can be happy, if part of the world is suffering from calamity like Hurricane Sandy, obviously all of us are anxious. Apt MMS, all of us should pray together that the environment should be stable at all places and everyone should be safe and fine. May Lord bless us all to be safe from calamity and bestow His love and affection on all of us with health and wealth.

Jai Guru Datta O most pure divine messenger of the love-filled cosmos ! That connection with you is all that I seek…to go home to this rightful truth and BE with in and of the love that is everywhere always! This means dropping ALL desires, be they material or spiritual, doesn’t it? Ah,the irony of Sadhana! Thank you Appaji for ever illuminating the Way to achieve the highest! Meanwhile I will focus only on You and blissfully swing like those ornaments in all the Grace and love radiating from your Sachchidanda! Sri Guru Datta

Jaya Guru Datta – Amma’s grace is complete. The invocation is so very appropriate particularly for all of us in the East Coast of the US praying for her to grace us with Shanti – and praying for her to be SHAANTAA…(after the mayhem created by Sandy). Thanks a lot Appaji for reminding the quality of our prayers.

  5. Jaya Guru Datta. To seek a reward is foolishness. Only God knows what we need at any given time. I have seen people “blessed” with great sums of money only for this supposed blessing to lead to their downfall. I am too ignorant to know which kind of reward would be best or if I deserve any kind of reward at all. Please let me remember to leave this up to Divine Mother Sri Swamiji. I sometimes forget and wish for this or that. Please forgive me. I love you so very much beloved Satgurudeva. Sri Guru Datta.

Jaya Guru Datta! How relaxing this MMS is. As relaxed as one can be when not expecting anything in reward. It is challenging for me not to think of any reward at all. The desire does crop up sometimes. And isn’t it easy to deceive oneself that one didn’t expect any reward, but somehow still does (secretly)? And again, there might still be an expectation of reward that one has not expected something, for example by being a ‘good boy’. Thank you, Appaji, for showering your love and patience on us and forgiving our desires (and even washing them out). Sri Guru Datta!

Sri Swamiji bestows on us so much. He really cares for each of us genuinely. We are so blessed by Sri Swamiji’s grace. He knows so much better what is appropriate for us as we do. He even comes in dreams and tells that i have forgotten some food in my backpack and i should take it out – like it happened today. It was really a necessary hint!

Sri Swamiji knows everything. Sadgurudeva knows what is best for us. Appaji is the biggest director. Whatever happens to us happens for the good and happens at the will of Sadgurudeva. We are blessed to have Sadgurudeva in our lives..
Dear Swamiji, All I will ask for is your company in my heart and mind, and Your grace. You are our Kali Mata. You destroy the evil within us and lift us from lower beings. Only You and devotion towards You is permanent. Everything else is a big drama which in Your timescale is a millionth of a second.

Pujya Puttuji,Thank you for showing us the mundane-ness of self-interest possessed prayers and for explaining the insignificance of the pendulum of life from Sri Mata’s perspective. We will strive to have Nishkamya Bhakti and focus and pray to our Sadgurudeva without desires in mind. Sadgurudeva is already controlling the ship of our life.

    JGD Appaji
If we know that Appaji is with us every step of the way, do we really need to desire for something in life? He knows what we need and what we can bear..He will give us the rightly deserved thing at the right time.. whatever He bestows upon us is the Prasada/Blessing obtained from our true prayers. Appaji bless me that I am able to follow Your teachings and can pray joyously with no desires.

    Jaya Guru Datta:

This message reminds me of Nishkama-karma where in the one prays without any return. This practice ultimately leads to salvation.

    • on November 1, 2012 at 2:03 am

Very very true. I have experienced the power of a selfless prayer. When I pray for someone’s upliftment, I feel uplifted myself. I end up learning so much when I make a selfless prayer. I ask for strength to face something and that prayer is answered with the strength of a thousand elephants. I would have got some inexplicable confidence to take on any challenge. It is all Sadguru’s grace. Appaji knows who needs what and at what time. He will give it to us and even take it back. Leave it all to HIM, but at the same time, put in our human efforts. Pray for knowledge to do a task, pray for strength to bear the result, pray for His grace. This is all it needs to make our own lives enriched with happiness and contentment.
Following these MMSs reliegiously and diligently makes life so much more stable and uncomplicated. WE OWE IT ALL TO HIM, JGD!!

In today’s MMS , Appaji has stated that ( Genuine prayer seeks no reward). Here I note that Even Appaji has spoken in Malayalam language very clearly also. According to me here Appaji has further filtered the MMS 62, 65, 69 , 126 and given the importance of prayer. Now I remember Appaji’s words saying that when you pray to God don’t wait or expect for any result. In other words your duty is only to pray to God and rest He will take care of you. Further He knows what is to be given and not to be given. This is because it is already written by Him when you have taken this birth. Therefore Appaji says when you pray to God, you always praise him and don’tdemandfor any unwanted desires and at the end we should pray not to have any Ego in our life and further we should have the will power to withstand any bad karmas also. But in this Kaliyuga it is very difficult to make understand people for which we have to follow a spiritual path through a Master. Hence Appaji we are so fortunate to get You as our Sadguru and we follow your words and teachings and do all our best to develop your mission.   JGD.

JGD. Again, this seems to say that ego must be completely minimized and surrender to God’s will completely maximized. Then prayer then seems only to be a communion of love with the Almighty. May this love find maximum expression under the will of God.

Very true and looks easy, but not that easy to practice. Most of our prayers consciously or unconsciously are for a reason and towards materialistic benefit.
Thank you Appaji for this beautiful MMS message. Under Pujya Sri Swamiji’s guidance we will practice nishkamya prayers for the welfare of the universe.

‘Korika leni pilupe prarthana’ – is posted in the Mysore ashrama – ‘Calling out (to God) without any desire is prayer’. So many wonderful prayers I have been taught by God’s grace alone, ‘Sab ko sanmati de bhagavan’ – ‘Please bless everyone with a pure heart, O God!’ is one. Mayyanuraagamudeeraya Datta!’ – ‘Increase my love for you Datta!’ is another. ‘Ella roopu taanaina Guruve mangalam’ – ‘May God, who has taken every one of these different forms, flourish!’ is one more. Each is a priceless gem. The saddest fate of a human, in my opinion, is losing faith in God, not having love for God, and being angry with God because of personal inconvenience, disappointment, loss, or tragedy. Having experienced such a miserable state before, I pray that such a fate does not befall anyone at anytime. God knows best. He makes everything happen for a good reason, whether we, in our ignorance, judge it as being good or bad. Jaya Guru Datta

Diese Botschaft ist so wundervoll, Appaji! Ohne Worte. JGD Rajeshi
