  1. {Refuge: Protection. Charity: Help, kindness, compassion}

Mothers & fathers have different ways of protecting children. Mothers are full of unconditional love, selfless inclusion & compassion. Fathers are full of how one has to build self-reliance to face life. Mothers love to have you around. Fathers love to watch as you take flight into the world.

Pranams Jayalakshmi Mata! Devi Mahatmya hails Ma Durga as the refuge of those who seek her protection. We’re fortunate to experience such refuge in our compassionate Sathguru, who’s our mother, father & more. He’s an unforgiving taskmaster when we’ve to grow our muscles in body & mind to fight the vagaries of life, He’s abhayaprada offering refuge, when we’re infirm in body or mind, as He does in Ammavodi (Hyderabad) for destitute women. We know His protection transcends past & future janmas. Empowered by such protection, we dedicate ourselves to selfless service of His mission. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, As I write this message, my cats are running around the house playing. They are mother and son. The mother was abandoned when my neighbors moved. They just left her behind, outside starving and full of kittens. She ended up on my porch begging for food. This is the story of almost every pet I have had in my life…abandoned, starved, abused, but taken in and loved. How many humans are left behind like this as well? My grandmother fed people from her back door during the Great Depression, and my mother used to work to feed the homeless. It gave them both great joy…and now you have given us the “Share the Food Program…” Help us remember that when we offer refuge to others, be they four-legged or two legged the reward is ours–love, peace, joy….

There is no One more charitable than Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji. He provides refuge for an untold number of devotees who have realized they have no place to turn but Him. His Motherly and Fatherly attention allows all who fall at His feet give up their fear. So many stories of His compassion and protection pervade. He is always present. Thank you Appaji. JGD.The Wise people had always an insight. They always had the Intuition or the Knowledge of Future to come. The Ramayana tells about the Refuge given to Vibhishana, the brother of King Ravana.Rama had no hesitation to grant Asylum to Him.
Devotee also present the same prediction in Guru, when appears before Him in the Pursuit of knowledge. Here the Devotee is running away from the resultant Backlash from the Karma induced actions.
Sathguru never fells that He is giving charity instead He feels it as homecoming of the wayward child.A GURU goes on teaching the child or devotee till He mends his way.A Sathguru never Leaves the Hand of a Devotee, but it is other way around.

Giving to others what I have in excess or what I do not need any longer, is easy. With peers, family members and friends who are prosperous and are not in need, sharing the home and food from the kitchen is easy and is done all the time. But to share with strangers, and especially those who are less advantaged than me is so hard to do. Yet, that is what is most needed. That is what will improve this world. What benefit is there to me spiritually to give to others what I do not need? What benefit is there to others if I give to them what they do not need? Yet why am I so afraid and reluctant to give to those who are really in need? Home, and food that we prepare to eat, are most personal. I am only comfortable in sharing them with my near and dear but not with strangers off the street although they need them more. It appears easier to give money on an impersonal basis to charity projects than to get involved personally and to help individuals who are in need.

I am lost in admiration to all those families who took in families of strangers for months on end, who lost their homes due to hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area.

I see with what an open heart and with what open arms Swamiji receives every one of us, rich and poor and from different nationalities and backgrounds, as if we were all his own intimate family! There is so much to learn here. My attitude has to change. Please help me Sri Swamiji. Please transform me to be like you. Jaya Guru Datta

Jai Guru Datta, Appaji. You are the Abhaya Pradaya of all times and all forms. When we serve You, per instructions laid by You, all rules are automatically deemed followed by us. We pray for the energy and the right mind to serve You with that kind of steadfastness. Sri Guru Datta.

Jai Guru Datta! After having read the comments, i got an idea how to apply this saying in my life: giving refuge in the sense to welcome and to accept every being that comes across my way, to open my heart to understand his needs and satisfy them according to my possibilities. May be sharing of ideas and experiences, may be giving any materiel support, may be simply listening, so many ways to give refuge…

Jaya Guru Datta! Dear Appaji, I wasn’t aware of today being Jayalakshmi Mata’s birthday. But when I heard this today during Navaratri livestream broadcast, I felt at once an immense love & joy and tears were about to come. Such is the power of our Mataji where we can seek refuge. Although we have never met Her personally, we can feel the love She has towards us all. She is our beloved Amma and She rocks us in Her Ammovodi. I remember wonderful days in Jayalakshmipuram a few years ago where Her presence and care for us could be felt very intensively. Om Sri Jayalakshmi Mata ki jaya!

    • Venkat on October 22, 2012 at 4:45 pm

Jaya Guru Datta. There are so many anecdotes of sharanaagati – providing refuge to the seekers in the ancient scriptures. Right from Ramayana (Sugreeva, vibheeshana, et al) all the way to sibi and others. This is done with nothing in return as an expectation. This is done out of pure love that doesnt seek anything in return. We are experiencing the same everyday, every minute in the divine protection of Appaji. For many, it is not even sought – generally, the refuge is given to those who seek it. That is given by God or God-natured people. If it is given unsolicited, then it has to be Sadguru Sri Swamiji. Sri Swamiji has been driving so many billions of lives from times not known to any one and is still continuing to do that. Not many devotees have known the time from when Appaji entered their lives and has been directing it to safety. That is the purest refuge that we get from Appaji. As usual, He is God+, because He is doing something greater than what God does… Jayaho Appaji…

JGD. I plan to go to Mysore for December, with Swamiji’s permission, please. It is a refuge I long for!! May all go well in this effort, with Datta’s Grace!. Jai Guru Datta.

Jai Guru Datta Appaji – Lord Rama was exemplary in giving refuge to everyone. He gave refuge to Vibhishana although he was from Ravana’s Camp. He even gave refuge to Ravana & Kumbhakarna after defeating them and welcomed them back to Vaikunta as Jaya-Vijaya (Guards-Dwarapalakas) after 3 incarnations as His enemies.
Pujya Appaji has established various institutions like Amma Vodi, Hospitals to provide refuge for the destitute and the needy.
We should all be grateful to our beloved Appaji for giving us refuge in the Sachchidananda school of Spirituality (despite all our inadequacies) to better ourselves through various means of Kriya Yoga, Pujas, Homas, Bhajans etc.
Humble prostrations to the Lotus feet of Devi Swarupa Sadhguru! Happy Durgashtami. Sri Guru Datta.

    Jai Guru Datta Appaji !!

Sadgurudeva offers us unconditional love and protection. Appaji makes us strong by being a strict disciplinarian with us to make us better. Gurudeva is Everything for us. Pujya Swamiji has given us refuge in him. Why fear when Appaji is here!!

Pujya Sri Swamiji we will follow your advice and do our best by Your Grace by providing refuge to those in need. By doing so we will be practicing your teachings and making you proud of us. You remove our fear by making us focus on righteous action without worrying about results. Thank you for showing the path of righteousness each day.

Sadgurdeva offers refuge to all of us. May we learn from your example. If we have the means then let us offer refuge to some soul, be it animal or human. I was conflicted about adopting a stray dog. I saw in a vision the same dog and thought it was Sadguru’s way of telling me to go ahead. Watching the transformation of this poor abused soul into a happy, secure , loved little being is very satisfying. The funny thing is we call him Datta dog because he loves to sit at the altar of Sawmiji! Om namo Hanumate namaha. Jaya guru Datta.

    • Archana Penukonda on October 22, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Jaya Guru Datta! So fitting that during the Navaratri, we should be reminded of the refuge that the Universal Mother offers us. The Universal Mother came to earth as Jayalakshmi Mata and placed another form of Herself as Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji. Sri Swamiji offers us refuge from the confusions that riddle the world. Perhaps, through this message, Sri Swamiji is asking us to provide refuge to the less privileged to the extent we can. Our family gave us refuge and brought us up. Sri Swamiji is giving us refuge and elevating us from this samsara. So, if giving refuge is the greatest charity, it means that throwing money at someone in need is not enough. Giving them love and fending for them like we’d fend for our family is how we should do it. Swamiji always talks about Vasudaika Kutumbam. Sri Swamiji treats everyone – every living being as family. May we learn this trait from our Holy Master, our Father and Mother. Obeisance to the Holy Lotus Feet!

True, this is taught by all dharmas…. Extending an helping hand to the needy makes almighty happy. Sri Swamiji’s messages are like sweets, though ingredients are similar but still the form and presentation varies, similarly good words are expressed in different forms as Nandana MMS. I could notice good thoughts to be followed by all of us to live as good and sensible humans in these Nandana MMS, few messages i’m not able to understand, but i think they should also be good ones, probably i’ve never heard such concepts earlier. Daily one message by Sri Swamiji is definitely a thought provoking one to me.

    Jai Guru Datta..

Parama Pujya Appaji, through His Mission and vision towards social causes has given enough examples to live this trait. Be it Ammavodi or other extended wings of Datta Peetham.

Mythological examples are many but as a part of this message, a feeling of gratitude propels me to remember about a devotee couple in NJ who gave us a shelter a decade ago in 2002 with open arms. It is a fact that there are many such devotee families helping the needy. That could have happened only for Sri Swamiji’s grace and that couple’s devotion towards their Holy Master, Pujya Sri Appaji.

Praying His Holiness to instill trust and compassion on the fellow beings so this could be followed even at the miniscule level in His big scheme of world play

Sharanu korina vadiki sharanu ichavu Datta!! Sharanagathudivi neevu!! Really, what else is Appaji teaching us through Datta Seva, Share your food, Annadanam, Ammavodi….I cant even recollect all this schemes and plans to help strangers. And, how many of us realize this lesson and practise it? I am one of those people who cannot part with things that I foolishly call my own. Help me Appaji to come out of this illusion of I, ME, MYSELF, MINE. It is so vicious. Backlashes me everytime. I witnessed the crowd in Navarathri and I saw people from all sections of society. Annapurna mandir never ran out of food to feed all of us. Ashram never ran out of space to provide mats/beds to people who wanted to sleep over for the nights. We should all learn this from our Sadguru. Help us open our eyes, please Appaji. Keep us awake!! JGD, Sharanagatha deenartha paritrana parayanam!!

Offering refuge is the greatest charity ~ 22 oct 2012

Namaste Puttuji. Wonderful video with wonderful bhajan. Offering refuge is the greatest charity. Food, shelter and clothing are the basic requirements of humans. Appaji always inspires everyone to offer food conducting annadana, small seva like ‘Share your food’ etc. Shelter to the needy too is the greatest charity. Place somewhere refugees can stay and feel homely. Everyone feel secure in the alms of a mother. Such homely place Appaji constructed and named it as ammavodi for elderly people who needs a homely and secure place to live. Offering food and clothing is easy but giving shelter to many is not a small task. Pranams to Appaji for all His activities giving all three basic requirements to the needy. Namaste and thank you Puttuji for posting the video.

    Jay Guru Datta,

when I think of my aunts who lived in homes for old people before they died, I think their “refuge”
was also the visits of friends and relatives.
I could feel this very clearly, and sometimes I scold myself nowadays, that I did not do more.

A little deed is so easily done by us, but for the seniors it means “a whole world”.

Ps : and for me it`s “a whole world” that I`m online again … ! THANKS to Lakshmi Durgi

Offering refuge is the greatest charity ~ 22 Oct 2012

All of us face so many problems everyday. These could be mental or physical. In today`s world we are lost in our own miseries and do not know what to do and where to go. At this point we try to seek refuge in somebody to forget our miseries. When we look into our puranas, the rishis, when tormented by the rakshasas (demons), took refuge in mother Goddess Durga. Divine Mother protected the rishis by giving them refuge and destroyed the demons.

Mother Theresa said, “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by, ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I had no clothes and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in”.
Hungry not only for bread — but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing — but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks — but homeless because of rejection.

Today we are witnessing all that our pujya Appaji is doing to help the society. The “Amma-Vodi” is testimony to pujya Appaji giving refuge to the homeless. HE has been the refuge to millions of people across the world, spiritually and emotionally

I remember when sri swamiji launched the ammavodi project in the name of His mother sri jayalakshmi mata during navaratri 2003. I was deeply touched by the ineffable compassion that could be felt then. offering refugee, I feel, is the greatest charity because it is the most difficult.
unable to offer physical refugee in the circumstances of my life I hope that at least – by the grace of my beloved sadguru deva – I can open my heart compassionately for those in need and give a place to those as well who do not make it easy for one to love them.
