  1. {Renunciation : The formal rejection of something, typically a desire.. renunciation of earthly pleasures} {Ostentation: Pretentious display meant to impress others; boastful showiness}
In a world where what we do speaks louder than what we say, we all derive our equity from action, not from possession.
Ostentation fuels attachment, fans the fire of desire, which further bloats the EGO. Ostentation is where we choose to express ourselves through our possessions. Victims of Ostentation are compelled to show-off, because they believe what they wear adds value to who they are.
Renunciation fuels detachment. It reigns in the EGO. Renunciation is when we feel at ease within, that we don’t feel the need to show-off to gain attention. Heroes of Renunciation are modest, because they believe who they are adds value to what they wear.
    Pranams Sathguru!
You’re our Rama who exemplifies the virtue of renunciation. We follow you.
    Jaya Guru Datta. Your Puttuji

All what you are and all what you have, take it and serve with it. Make good things. But don’t show at all: look, that’s me, I can ….., I am …… No, I do , what I feel and the only, what is important, that God will be happy with me.

Jaya Guru Datta! Before my academic classes, I often hear my students talking about the other professors and how they only have three shirts or wear the same pants each week, or dress in a way that they think is out of style. This always amuses me because I know they are young. The greatest Guru among us wears the same robes everyday. Real knowledge and power doesn’t come with a piece of silk or a designer label, it comes from within. Sri Guru Datta!

jaya guru datta appaji ! The ornament of virtue is renunciation; not ostentation

    • Meena Intwala on February 14, 2013 at 12:34 pm

Ornaments will only beautify the body while good qualities and virtues will shine the soul. Jaya Guru Datta Appaji for this very important Nanadana message.

  3. Jaya Guru Datta Appaji,
What a beautiful metaphor this MMS message is! “The ornament of virtue is renunciation, not ostentation” We can analyse every word of this message then reflect on it as a whole.
What is virtue? One automatically associates it with righteousness. Virtue is excellence in moral conduct and righteousness. When we speak of a virtuous person, we think of excellent souls who are righteous and pure.
The crowning jewel or ornament of such people is renunciation; they are not ostentatious or showy, they do not do good deeds for fame or put on large acts of pretense. Instead, virtuous people are dispassionate and free from attachment (We can remember Jan 30th MMS here “A man who is free from desires treats everything as a piece of straw”)
This MMS begins with the image of Sri Rama, Sita Devi and Bhaiya Lakshmana in the way that they would walk in the forest with Rama himself leading the way. The image of a forest is shown next. Indeed the Ramayana holds prime example of virtue in all good characters, the most common example is the virtuous Sri Rama who renounced name, fame and glory to fulfill the word of his father and free the earth from evil. The verse “jayatu jayatu mantram, janmasaphalya mantram” plays next which is from the Rama mantram and it means “Victory to Rama mantram which ensures the fulfillment of a human life.”
May Lord Rama, our dear Appaji himself bless us to be virtuous and humble devotees. Jai Veera Hanuman!

  4. Jaya Guru Datta. I feel imprisoned by ostentation. Please put me and my family on the proper path. Let us, all of us, serve You. To serve money is foolishness and creates such unhappiness. I do not want this. I only want You and wealth is a gift from Sri Swamiji that should not be hoarded and used to make one feel higher than another. Only God is the most high. Let me be a slave only to Sri Swamiji. Let us be good guardians of wealth and use it to help others while realizing we are not the doers and we are the ones who are benefitted by supposed charity. We need Your help Sri Swamiji. My children are Yours. I beg You to make me the best mother. You are the real Mother, I am just the temporary mother but please let me do my duty perfectly. Do not let me fail You. I love you so very much. Sri Guru Datta.

Jaya Guru Datta Appaji – an often stated adage coming from Your Holiness has more impact. Thanks a lot for reminding Appaji – if not identical we hear a similar one in Telugu. The attachment increases in flaunt whereas the detachment improves when there is no show-off. Jayaho Appaji.

    Jaya Sri Rama
    Jaya Guru Datta
Renunciation from this wonderful Musical Message Saying video is not easy. i like to view it again and again. The music fits greatly to the walk of Sri Rama, Sita Mata and Lakshmana. The flute guides us into a fairy tale forest. There Sri Swamiji tells us that the ornament of virtue is renunciation. This can be greatly seen by the Ramayana story of Lord Rama, Sita Mata and Lord Hanuman which are so beautiful sitting together in the last image. Their example shines with bright yellow rays into the world.

the music and images on this mms are spectacular and the message is is even better. the people that stick out the most in my mind as living embodiments of this principle are Appaji’s father and aunty Venkamma. i like reading about those two in the early days… such brilliant, scholarly, refined beings and as detered to possessions as butterflies are to sea monsters. JGD Appaji
When we do selfless seva with humility, follow Appaji, listen to His music.. the mind and heart automatically become purified from the inner enemies and shine. That divine aura is the best decoration one can have.. all the worldly affairs and showing off, pale in comparison. Only with Your guidance and blessings Appaji, one day our inner soul will shine.

    • on February 15, 2013 at 12:08 am

In to day’s MMS, Appaji is saying about the value of Renunciation ( sacrificing mentality ) and the consequences of ostentation (Boasting ourself) . In this Kaliyuga , people are more attached to worldly pleasures and desires which lead to Ego and finally they pretent that they are very great and boasting themselves in every thing. But they are not thinking that it is only temporary . The MMS 256 is related to this only. Hence to overcome this, we have to control our mind sothat we will not involve unnecessarly in such things. But to control our mind , it is not so easy , for which we have to follow the spiritual path under the guidance of our Sadguru , Who will put in the Right path. That is why Appaji says when ever , we follow renunciation , the simplicity, being humble in our life will rule us. At the same time if we follow the concept of ostentation side by side, we develop Ego in our life which ultimately lead to failure . The photography is very apt for this MSG , since Lord Rama follow renunciation . The Bhajan is also apt for this MSG since it related to Sri Rama only. Finally , Appaji we got your concept and follow your teachings to develop renunciation in our life where ever it is necessary. JGD .

Jai Guru Datta, how beautifully expressed that renunciation fuels detachment and ostentation fuels attachment. We are ever so greatful for these messages as they are surely helping us towards the virtuous path. Pranam Sadguru

    • Archana Penukonda on February 15, 2013 at 12:24 am

Jaya Guru Datta! If we look at history, the noble have always been humble and detached, while the wicked, the demons, have been arrogant and ostentatious. In this age, money is the gauge by which you are judged. A wealthy person is welcomed more easily, is trusted more easily, is accepted more easily. So, there is desire, a subconscious or conscious desire to maintain the status with richly decorated homes, beautiful clothing, luxury cars, jewelry, fashionable bags and so on. The desire to be recognized and appreciated by others is perhaps the primary driver for such behavior. Willingly or otherwise, I’m a part of this rat race. I pray to Sri Swamiji to bless me with the right, dharmic thinking so I can lead a virtuous life without ostentation. Shedding ostentation will need restraint and discipline. Obeisances at the Holy Lotus Feet!

JGD! i clicked on this email after coming home from a party I attended here innew Orleans… New Orleans can be seen through eyes as the epitome of ostention!
tonight, I dresses to go to the soiree, and I thought, Oh I should wear that diamond tennis bracelet my husbanc gave to me years and years ago! It will look good and I am sure that he will be happy to show people how well he treats me! I thought for awhile before Doing so , as I rarely wear the beautiful jewelry that have! BECAUSE i usually go it alone and think it is ostentaitous! Go figure! Then I thought how mush Swamiji decorates Mother Goddess! And i told myself OK! I am a Temple! afterall! i went ahead and wore the bracelet! it is beautiful! Especially set against the beautiful diamonD ENCRUSTED Rolex watch I have (which i rarely wear also! and really what is time TIME since we have enxountered our Swamiji?) But what to do with all our human ornaments?
I will say this! NOW! ”
The most beautiful ornament that I wore last night was my inner knowledge and my FAITH perioD AND MY LOVE FOR EVERYONE AT THE PARTY!…oh and my smile…I don’t think anyone really noticed that SPARKLING DAIMOND TENNIS BRACELET AND IT WAS A LOT OF CAROTS!… ( But I won’t tell my husband this) JGD!
