Very simple, very powerful. This MMS blends elements of Shiva, Rama, glimpses of His Holiness giving away gifts on His birthday celebrations, and closes with Rama Nama Japa.. all this set to the bhajan ‘Ram Namhi madhur malaai, Janam Janam dhuk dur bhagaayi’ in the background.

Lord Shiva is easily pleased by the penance of his devotees.. gives boons to all who please him.. from Markandeya to Ravana. Lord Rama is revered for giving away riches to the needy saints and brahmins. The Gods loved to give.. so much that they designed creation to sustain and evolve through giving.. watch a crow feeding its little one, or a cow feeding its calf. Plants and animals are predisposed to giving. So, are humans.

The baby wants a toy.. mama gives it to her. The baby is happy, but not for long.. she wants a different toy.. a bigger toy. She grows up with time, and so do her wants. Her husband gifts her a golden ring.. she is happy.. but soon starts yearning for a diamond ring. In this material world, the joy that comes from receiving is very transient.

Mother is extremely happy giving her child whatever she can. She gives her wealth, her health.. all of herself. The more she gives, the happier she is. The very thought of what she gave makes her happy, when she remembers such moments in later life. So, it happens with teachers. Their joy in acquiring knowledge is transient.. but their joy in sharing knowledge with their students is everlasting.

Our dear Appaji has always demonstrated the virtue of giving.. Annadana, Nada Nidhi, Veda Nidhi, Free Hospitals, Free education, Free tricycles and such aids for the disabled.. the list is endless. Every bhajan he sings, every byte of divine music for healing and meditation he gives to His children.. he gives with unconditional love. He shows us that the way to find the happiness we want, is to give people around us the happiness they want. Only such happiness sustains the passage of time. “Manava Seva is madhava seva”.. His Holiness lives this dictum.

His giving this MMS is a gesture to remind us that we must begin giving, and continue giving. Various schemes Appaji has created for us.. Nitya Annadana, Nitya Puja, Saashwata Seva, Hanuman Sethu Bandha.. there is a long list of reasons to give. The ‘master of eternal joy’ wants us to experience the same too! Thank you dear Master! We are giving. And we realize what we give is only a small portion of what we have received from you.. including the will to be able to give. In your grace, we know the more we give, the more we receive. So, please accept our humble offering. And bless us that our will and capacity to give keep increasing with every passing moment. Let us experience the true joy in giving everyday.. day after day.
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

  1. Was just watching shatashloki ramayan when this mms came! Truly a miracle.. Well true joy is in giving indeed.. Just as how Sri swamiji is distributing goodness and joy through the mms videos, shatashloki ramayan , and the list goes on ! We are the receivers of this gift , we enjoy it thoroughly and that is all … If we could practice what these carry, that would be a true samarpana at Sadguru’s lotus feet , which would definitely make our beloved Sadguru joyous..! pray to Sadguru to bless us with the determination and focus to follow only what the guru teaches and not get deviated at any point of time.. What is a good day for me? I am therapeut, and a good day is for me, when people go out with lightening eyes or a smile. It is so good to see, that I could give something that makes happy. Then my heart is full! When people bring me a gift, it is also nice, because they bring it with happyness, that they feel better after therapy. But it is a short joy, my heart is touched, but it isn’t full.

    • Vanaja on August 24, 2012 at 8:59 am

Yes, dear Puttuji, selfless giving is something very noble. People who are helping others without expecting anything in return are the ones worth looking up to.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji! Who gives more than You! I know of no one! Reading this message this morning reminded me of my work following Hurricane Katrina. My job was to help relief workers overcome the stress of their jobs. While many were indeed stressed, I encountered many workers who were thriving and happy because they were being of service. Many told me that they felt more alive and happy as they were working to help others than they ever had in their day to day lives! The joy that can come with service, especially in difficult times, can be a surprise and sometimes we crush it because we think its inappropriate to be happy when others are in need. Many of us have been taught that we are to feel pity and compassion as we give, but not joy. But joy is the reward of giving! Jaya Guru Datta for freeing us to experience this bliss. You always teach us that when we do good works for others, we are the ones who benefit. I’ve heard that the joy of giving is one of the best kept secrets on the planet and that if we all knew how true it was, we’d all be doing it. Jaya Guru Datta, for showing us again how to be happy and at peace!

Simple, beautiful saying. ONe has to experience the joy of giving. Jai Guru Datta Puttuji.

    • on August 24, 2012 at 9:54 am

Jaya Guru Hanuman, Thank you Puttugamji for the amazing MMS and beautiful explanation. My favorite quote of Sri Swamiji that drew me towards him is:

At the end of life we shall not be asked
    how much pleasure we had in it, but how much service we gave to it;
    not how full it was of success, but how full it was of sacrifice;
    not how happy we were, but how helpful we were;
not how much ambition was gratified, but how Love was served

The above quote helps us understand that at end of life what we give is the only thing that matters and not what we receive. There is so much poverty and suffering in the world. Somewhere along the way we have forgotten the art of giving. Below excerpt from Sri Swamiji’s speech helps us understand this – “Many people are asking Swamiji why there is so much of suffering in this world. It is because man has become more and more selfish. He thinks only of his house, his wealth, his family. He wants to add more and more to his wealth and so works selfishly with the result he forgots god. Too much attachment to worldly objects and feelings of ‘I and mine’ make man selfish. There is nothing wrong if you are a householder. But think of your sadguru. Think of god and do your earthly duties.Sadguru alone is your permanent friend. So develop friendship with your sadguru and ennoble your life.Sadguru intensely loves you. When you do all your work for the sake of the sadguru then you will be working for the sake of mankind.”

Sri Swamiji is our ideal in learning the art of giving. He has been performing so many social activities like Datta Seva, SGS Hospital, Amma vodi, Veda Pathasala, Vagdevi school for communication handicapped, Share your food program etc. and the list goes on. Why is Sri Swamiji doing all of this? He does not have to do anything as he is already an avadhoota. He is helping us understand that true joy comes out of unselfishness. Unselfishness is giving without expecting anything in return. Unselfishness is godliness. The one who has more of this unselfishness is more spiritual and nearer to God. The selfish person is further away from God no matter how much worship, japa, tapas one performs.

Humble prostrations to Sri Swamiji who is the epitome of unselfishness

    Om namo hanumate namaha

JGD Appaji!! Straight to the point kind of a message. Being at the receiving is always good. Makes anyne happy. But how long does that last? With God too, He keeps giving us everything we ask for. What happens with it? More lives ahead? more births, more lessons..list is endless.
But here is the secret to eternal bliss 🙂
As always, You lead us by example. You give and you give only when you think the time is right. Until then, there is this intrinsic healing process taking its tolls on us. We learn what to hold on to and what to let go. You taught us to give, selflessly. Datta Seva, Yogasangeeta, Hanuman Sethu Bandha..adopt a bonsai, Share your Food..hospitals, schools, nada yoga raagasaagara..etc etc. It is a big dilemna sometimes which one of these to choose from. But for that too, You have an answer “Offer my share at Your Holy Feet”. You will use it the way you want. Isn’t that the best option, really?
The very thought of giving that you trigger within us is truly a blessing. You have blessed us to be capable to make that offerring. Reminds me of one more Kabir’s doha “Mera mujh mein kuch nahin, Jo kuch hai so tera, Tera tujhko somptaa, Kya laage hai mera”
Joy of giving has to be experienced, those smiling faces, those blessings will motivate anyone!!
Puttuji, eloquent tnterpretation. Thanks for sharing 🙂 JGD!

  2. JGD. Our beloved Appaji is always so joyous, even under trying circumstances. I understand now the foundation for His beautiful smile. He gives and gives over and over. I know first hand for I was the recipient of His most precious gift. Life. Thank you again my precious Master. Jaya Veera Hanuman

  3. Jai Guru Datta, there is indeed a joy in giving, be it love, smile, gift or time. It feels right to share whatever we can, does not matter if It is small or big. What matters is that we do. Make a difference in somebody’s life. Even one good deed a day will go a long way.
    Sri Guru Datta

A very noble and a very simple message from Pujya Sadguru Deva. All happiness is in giving and sacrifice only! Acquiring and amassing only makes the journey that much more tiring. The prayer by Puttuji in the last paragraph of His comments, saying, “please accept our humble offerings, but bless us to develop our WILL to give more and more”, is the wonderful way of praying to Pujya Appaji. In His grace, may we be moulded further and further to become generous givers. Sri Guru Datta.

    • Hema on August 24, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Our Sadgurudeva is the perfect example of selfless giving. His every action is done to give some benefit to us. Aas his devotees we must try to follow his example. It is good to sacrifice a a little, to do without something and use that money for charity. However there are many false charitable organizations . The best way is to let Sadguru distribute the funds. Also we can give of ourselves by performing services that help others. Even giving good advice is a service. Leading someone to Sadguru is perhaps the greatest service. All of us are benefitting so much from Puttugam, MMS , Yogasangeeta. Let us try to support these services of Sadgurdeva by also contributing what we can. Om namo Hanumate namaha. Jai Guru Datta.

    Om Ramaya Namaha
Sri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama

We are blessed to be with our Sadguru Sri Swamiji who is tuning us slowly and patiently to make us to be on the right path.

Another example of giving is the ‘Share your Food’ program. It is helping us in several ways. One is to skip the lunch/dinner, which makes us experience slight hunger. Initially sometimes it was causing little difficulty to experience that hunger but it gives a very good lesson as how fortunate many of us are who are able to have proper meal everyday. Now it has become part of life and we are used to skip Lunch and it has become part of our life.

Thougt it is painful to see so many people suffering for not being able to have proper meal atleast once a day, we believe that ‘Share your food’ kind of programs will atleast help some of them. Though it would be great if we can eradicate hunger from this world, While we reach that stage, these small acts need to be continue to help the needy.

Thanks to Pujya Sri Swamiji for guiding us towards this program as well as many other such good programs.

Pranams to the Lotus feet of Pujya Sri Swamiji.

Jai Guru Datta. Sri Swamiji has created the avenues for us to give through the many types of sevas. We experience joy when we give, and this joy is from our Appaji. We can only give if we have, and we can only have with our Sadguru’s grace. So are wereally giving? It His grace, we are enjoying and are able to have in order to give. May our Appaji continue to bless us to always give so that we can swim in His blissful world. Sri Guru Datta.

Jai Guru Datta, Sri Gurubyo Namaha, Every task performed by our sad guru is only for the sake of Datta devotees. In Bhagavad Gita Kṛiṣhṇa wants only loving service and nothing more. Kṛiṣhṇa accepts even a little flower from His pure devotee. He does not want any kind of offering from a nondevotee. He is not in need of anything from anyone, because He is self-sufficient, and yet He accepts the offering of His devotee in an exchange of love and affection. To develop Kṛiṣhṇa consciousness is the highest perfection of life.

In a similar trend our guru deva Swami Sachidananda offering so many wonderful sevas to purify all datta family member. Selfless service to humanity is the true service to God. Om Namo Hanumathe Namaha, Millions of Pranams to the Lotus feet of Pujya Sri Swamiji.

By giving or helping others, we feel good and happy. Taking from others makes us feel that we are indebted for the help. At inevitable situations one can take help, but should be paying by extending our helping hand to needy. Mother Teresa lived as an example to convey this message. Sri Swamiji insists all His devotees to help each other and other needy. On every Tuesday all His devotees were instructed to share one meal or the amount of one meal with needy, what an amazing thought….. This is how Guru guides us in right path by reforming us to reach the Almighty with small steps.

    Jai Guru Datta
When I look back at my children`s days, I remember lots of times when my mother
gave me nice sweets and toys. And always an attentive comment :
“Oh it`s not so bad, better luck next time.”
So I grew up in an atmosphere of shelter and well being.
Today when I deal with my babysitter or repetitional children, I`m doing the same,
out of full heart, because the good example of my youth is still working in me.
This is a treasure of invaluable beauty.
When I look at the faces of the children and see the spark of divine joy in them, I feel
very, very happy … Thanks to dear Swamiji and dear mother …

Jaya Guru Dutta, Of all the gifts Sri Swmaiji has given me, Bhakthi is the greatest. I like to be at the giving end of goodness to others rather than receiving. I think in the materialistic world, there isn’t much giving and taking for me, but my true life – my spiritual life with Sri Swamiji, I am never able to be at the giving end. Whatever little I want to do for my Sadguru, I can never be in credit as Sri Swamiji gives a million times more. All the wealth, knowledge, health and peace have no meaning if they are not placed at the Divine Feet of my Guru. As Puttuji so benevolently explains, receiving does not give any joy anymore even in the material world I am sleeping into every day. I pray to Sri Swamiji to give us a mind to give always and not take. Sri Guru Dutta. Sreevidya

What I found very interesting is how it mentions that mankind is built upon the principle of giving. I am sure that if we all focus on giving, we will achieve a much better world and a much better environment. JGD.

Namaste Puttuji, marvellous video. Thank You so much. Like Lord Rama, Sri Swamiji always helped others righteously. True joy is in giving, not in receiving. Very much true. Giving needful to others gives satisfaction and joy but never gets the same joy while receiving. Sri Swamiji is teaching us to give others with ‘ Share your food ‘, and also as per instructions of Sri Swamiji, devotees help people in needy in calamities, hospitals in many branches of Datta Peetham to help needy, many medical camps in rural areas and many more. Not only medicl camps, Kriya yoga camps are conducted which is not only useful for physical health but also for mental health. Sri Swamiji’s idea of teaching devotees to help others is to help a needy and also to uplift humanity in devotees. Projects look small but are very much advantageous. Namaste Puttuji.

    JGD Appaji
Every thing Appaji does is for giving to others. Each and every action of His is for the benefit of the world. Appaji is nature, giving unconditionally and teaching us the same so that we realize our true nature. “Share your Food”,”HSB” etc are some of the examples of Him guiding us to be more giving.
This MMS says by chanting Rama’s sweet name, the sufferings of not this janma, but all janmas are removed..added to that if we develop the virtue of giving without any expectations, we will surely find true divine happiness.
