This is a tough one, when seen from the surface. Let’s get to the depth of it.. to see how practical, simple and powerful it actually is. Four key words to reflect.. discard, desire, despondency and dispassion. a) Discard: To get rid of. To dispense with. b) Desire : A deep sense of wanting something or someone. c) Despondency : Gloom, depression, Sadness. d) Dispassion : Objectivity.. not being influenced by emotion or personal feelings, detachment. Rama is invoked as the ideal of dispassion. Why only one Rama ? Why not clone Rama in a laboratory ? Why not manufacture a few ounces of dispassion and distribute to everyone ? The catch is – Dispassion is easy to talk about. Easy to preach. Easier to trick yourself into believing you will get to it one day. Why is dispassion so elusive ? This MMS says it will be elusive, until you discard your desire and despondency.

Why should you discard desire to acquire dispassion ? When you visit Varanasi ( Kashi ) you should discard something. This tradition purports to enable dispassion ( objectivity, detachment ). But, people come back from Varanasi, and continue to stay entangled in their desires. Has Varanasi become another picnic spot ? Ask someone “What did you discard in Varanasi?”. He will possibly say “karela” ( bittergourd , pavakkai ). Ask “Why karela?” The answer is most likely to be “I did not like it. I wanted to get rid of it once and for all. Now, no one can advise me to eat karela”. Is this what our ancient seers meant when they wanted us to give up something in Kashi ? Doing this, will we acquire dispassion ? Certainly not. How does it impact you to give up something that you never wanted to have ? If you call it ‘giving up’ or ‘discard’ – you are fooling yourself. Suppose you love mangoes, and you discard mangoes in Kashi.. you may acquire ‘dispassion’.. because you have learnt to discard your desire.

Why should you discard despondency to acquire dispassion? Imagine you see a funeral procession passing by on the road. You may stop for a moment, may be enquire who and how, may be say a prayer for the departed soul.. and then carry on with the task at hand. That ‘detached – water on a lotus leaf – kind of response’ is possible.. because you have no reason to grieve. Because you have responded this way, does it mean you have acquired ‘dispassion’ ? No ! You acquire dispassion when you rise above your grief when you experience the loss of a loved one. That is why detachment comes so late in life.. after repeated experiences of grief, of sadness. That is the way it happened to Arjuna. He had to discard his grief, before he acquired that dispassion with which he fought for what was right. Here is the catch – it helps to discard despondency before you get too old.. You need enough time and energy ahead to experience the spiritual progress that comes with detachment.

This is why our beloved Sathguru is commanding this internet generation to discard desire and despondency. He wants us to realize our true inner potential in ‘this life’.. which comes only with acquiring dispassion. We are listening to you, Gurudeva ! Million pranams to you for the timely alert. We are discarding desire and despondency right now. Bless us with the strength to endure the pain that will follow, as we grow up to be dispassionate disciples you will be proud of.
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, the images in this touching message this morning really say so much! It is beautiful to see Swamiji blessing us with both hands telling us that he is dispelling our fears. And next we see the thousands of flowers with the energy flowing towards them, like all of the blessings and teachings Sri Swamiji has bestowed on us. First this made me think of how hard it is to break our habits and change and accept the joy and peace that Sri Swamiji is offering all of us. Our old habits are comfortable and change is scary. But in His love, Swamiji is telling us not to be afraid. Then in the end, he shows us the book and pencil and Rama’s name, reminding us that when we have those fears, when crazy thoughts come it is as simple as chanting God’s name. Swamiji, You are always telling us that japa and Nama Sankirtana are the method for Kali Yuga….Jaya Guru Datta for reminding us that we need to not be afraid of joy and happiness and the blessings that You are bestowing and that if we remember the divine name of Rama we will be fine…

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

This message reminded me of a beautiful saying from Neetimala by Sri Swamiji – ‘Desire deludes the mind and despodency or dejection dries it up. Therefor give up both of them. He who has dicarded both of these can alone acquire vairagya.’

Sri Swamiji explained beautifully about desires in one of his speech – “All the desires are computerized. Not even one is left out. Everything is registered. Mother goddess will grant every single desire. You have no choice but to experience the result, even if you forgot that you had asked for it. For you to experience them, you have to keep taking births. Swamiji sings the bhajan, ‘Janmaniki moolamu korikalu andi..’ which explains this secret behind our repeated births and the reasons thereof.

Now the guru has taught you the secret; he has given the explanation. He forces us to do nishkama karma. You keep asking for things. They keep getting recorded. You did not desire janmas (births). But they happen because of your pending desires. They cause the repeated births. Be very careful”.

Extract from Neetimala regarding Despondency – “Despodency or dejection is another drawback in man. A man should always be wary of it. He should not get dejected when he meets with difficulties or failures in life. Trials and failures develop power of endurance and patience. It makes a man humble and purifies his heart.”

Therefore we have to give up both to grow spiritually and evolve in Guru Bhakti and Guru Seva.

Let us all pray to Sri Swamiji for strength, intellect and knowledge.

Humble prostrations to lotus feet of Sri Swamiji who gives knowledge and dispassion.

    Om namo hanumate namaha

  3. Jaya Guru Datta Puttuji. This saying takes me back to the basic question, whether the egg came before the chicken or the reverse. If I am blessed with dispassion, then I would be free from desire and despondency. I would be constantly living in the knowledge of Truth that all this is unreal and undesirable. I would hence be free from desires and the resultant despondency caused by unfulfilled desires. But not having attained dispassion yet, I am subject to desires and despondency. The only way that I can get rid of them is by acquiring dispassion, which is possible only by the grace of Sadguru. As a human overwhelmed by the power of illusion which is unconquerable by even the greatest of sages except by the grace of God, how can I possibly expect to overcome desires? Unless and until I get established in Truth, such a state of dispassion will not be my experience. Do you not agree? Except to totally surrender at the lotus feet of Sadgurudeva and pray fervently to bless me with dispassion, I feel that I have no other choice. To experience the eternal bliss from where our Sadguru Sri Swamiji’s enthralling smiles spring from, I need to acquire His level of dispassion, which only He can gift to me out of HIs sheer compassion. It is not something that I can earn by my merit or effort. Even my effort and the strength to put it forth lie in His absolute control. Sri Guru Datta

    • Janani on August 17, 2012 at 9:36 am

All human actions  are a product of these  seven causes taken in different combinations : chance, nature, compulsions, habit, reason, passion, desire.  The order is as follows:-

You chanced to be in a situation ->

You reason out weather you like it or not ->

You desire to escape the situation if not liked by you or stick to it if its in your favour  , ->

Desire grows into passion -> ( passion is tougher to uproot than desire)

Repeatedly thinking about your passion and perusing it becomes your habit ->

    Habit forms your nature->

Now even if u want to discard your nature , you can’t  hence it’s becomes a compulsion for u to stay the way you are ->

Lastly you regret for having created out of yourself ,a person whom you no longer like , leading to despondency… So , why should we give way to desires which lead to despondency in the long run ? Instead accept situations around you the way they are as a blessing by Sadguru rupi Raam and try  your best to survive through it the best you can … Lord Raam did the same after all.. Wherever he was , with whoever he was ,be it a monkey or a human or a squirrel ,he never grumbled but simply concentrated on his goal of saving Sita mata and took the help of the resources around to do so .. He never desired to change anything ( ex bit wanting to take back his father’s promise ) and was not despondent ever . On the other hand he accepted facts as they were, and made the best out of each situation ,thus becoming an everlasting role model for mankind !! Jai Sri Raam

Jai Guru Datta. Dispassion is the crown jewel of all. For the one who is on the way to achieve dispassion, Sukha and Dukha will start being the same……and good lord, what a state that would be! Liberation, indeed! With Sadguru’s grace, Hanuman’s sakthi, may we discard desire, despondency, self-pity…and acquire the greatest jewel called Vairagya. Sri Guru Datta

    • Hema on August 17, 2012 at 10:41 am

This life is full of never ending desires and problems. As soon as one desire is fulfilled or one problem solved, another immediately takes its place. We become despondent because we feel that if thing s are not going our way then all is lost. However if we realize that all is temporary in this world and that god, guru and truth are eternal only then it becomes easier to become dispassionate about things both good and bad that happen to us. Surrender to Sadguru, chanting of gods names, mediation or even just thinking of Sadguru has made a huge difference to this devotee. I am starting to realize spiritually that this world does not offer happiness. Although I know this intellectually , it’s is a huge difference to actually feel it deep inside oneself. I have now been able to discard greed, vanity, envy and malice. I tried on my own but it did not happen until I surrendered to Sadguru and started writing Om namo Hanumate namaha. My sense of peace is deep. It is a different feeling than anything I have experienced before. Sure there is so much more improvement needed, but I don’t worry because I know Appaji is in charge now. I am eternally grateful to Appaji and Lord Hanuman, I eternally bow at their lotus feet. Jai Guru Datta!

  4. JGD. I remember crying internally at a distant time in my life to your photo ” I have what I don’t want, and want what I don’t have”‘, in that despondent state you answered in my heart. ” Love what you have and care not for your wants.” Thank you for your inspirational message, it has substantiated your heart to heart communication. In the video, Sri Swamiji is giving us Abhaya and if we take a look at that Abhaya, it is with Vibhoothi, which denotes Vairagya. Pujya Sri Swamiji is helping us with small steps to reach the stage where we reflect as true disciples with all the ideal qualities.

Pranams to the Lotus feet of Pujya Sri Swamiji.

I pray to give up desire and despondency. For years I pray. On one hand we are told we are not the “doer”, to give up ownership of action. On the other we are told “give up”! What is one to do? I find that I can only seek refuge at the Lotus Feet of my Datta Sadguru, Sri Swamiji. It is through His Divine music and other gifts that these unwanted qualities diminish. His Grace alone, with my “sincere effort” is the sledgehammer that breaks up the seeming concrete stream of thoughts and desire. This bhajan was among the first that I listened to many years ago. It continues to provide the fuel to burn the samskaras. Jaya Guru Datta

As if yesterday’s fiery spice was not enough, today’s MMS was a bouncer 🙂 But Puttuji, your explanation of this MMS was very simple and comprehensible.
Very very tough to practise. My baby step towards practising this is introspecting.
Over the last one year, the turn of events in my life have made me understand that accepting things as they come my way is nothing else but HIS blessing for me. HE is teaching me to give up on desires and passion and hold on to the ABSOLUTE. I have begun to beileve in the statement “HE has a plan for all of us, He reveals HIS plans only when time is right and He is constantly teaching us to accept HIS play”. After all, Guru is the absolute and HE alone has the right and power to change us and our fate. He is our destiny. The day we realize this, discarding desires and despondency is a cake-walk and acquiring dispassion is achievable.
Please Appaji, hole me in your fold, keep my mind tight in your fist. My life’s strings are in your hands. You are the Master of Puppets and I know, you are pulling my strings your way and this is only for my good 🙂 Help me accept it, help me keep my fears at bay, help me control my mind, help me see things rationally. This is my prayer to you. JGD!!

    Jaya Guru Datta
Sri Rama gives us excellent example for a life which rises above despondency. After Sita was kidnapped he still performed the last rituals for the dead Jatayu helping him to gain moksa as was told to us by Sri Bala Swamiji.
We have so many opportunities to practice “discarding despondency and desire”. The world we live in is an ideal training center. How many things come into our mind that we desire each day? We can try to rise above the desires. And often grief and despondency comes. All these feelings are created in our mind as Sri Swamiji told us yesterday. This knowledge is maybe a key to rise above and to discard them.

JGD! It is quite obvious that giving up desires will lead to dispassion. I had to and still have to think about despondency… In the end, it’s just another form of desire, but with a desperate or hopeless feeling. Oh Lord, oh Sadgurudeva, please bless me to discard this step by step. SGD. ONHN!

Jai Guru Datta Appaji – Your teachings are get tougher and tougher from an implementation perspective as expected. Puttuji’s elaboration provides the necessary sunshine to our clouded minds to truly understand the purport and essence of each Nandana MMS teaching!

It is not a coincidence that the first chapter in Bhagavad Gita is called ‘Vishada Yogam’ and
the first chapter in Yoga Vasishtam is called Vairagya Prakaranam’.

Essentially the Vishada (sorrow) of Arjuna and Vairagya (desirelessness) of Sri Rama led to the profound teachings of Krishna-Gita and Vasishta-Gita respectively.

It would seem that giving up desire may be possible if we have ‘Sachchidananda’ as our Goal (Dharana) and surrender to His Lotus feet – thanks to SadhGuru’s teachings… but overcoming despondency is a huge challenge – as we are constantly combating Age, health issues, stress, conflict and chaotic nature of KaliYuga.
This MMS teaching makes us realize that the purpose of Despondency in our lives is to teach us specific lessons and not to make us suffer or feel depressed. If we can gain clarity of the lesson from each despondent situation – then we have conquered despondency and be truly dispassionate and detached. The lesson is to find those ‘pearls’ in the ‘oceans’ of despondency.

Dearest Appaji – We are truly indebted to you for all your Compassionate teachings and unparalleled guidance with your Sachchidananda Gita!

    Sri Guru Datta

    • Sundaram Sambamoorthy on August 17, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Total surrender to the feet of our Sadgurudeva can only lead us to discard desire and despondency and attain dispassion. Doing Namasankirtanam and chanting the name of Lord as Japa keeps the mind free of desires and instil in us the aspect of Bhakti and Bhavana towards our Sadgurudeva. Jaya Guru Datta and prostrations to the Lotus feet of Appaji.

    • Maurice Clarke on August 17, 2012 at 7:58 pm

“Sri Sadgurubhyohnamaha!” the Sri Guru Gita opens. Soon after Swamiji states that all human desires fall into just 3 types – To be better at being; to know more and to be ever cheerful. To me this ultimately are desires for pure Sat, Chid and Ananda, however it seems that our understanding and techniques are poor. So in the Guru Gita Swamiji then notes that all efforts fail for those who do not have and follow the techniques given by a perfect Guru.

I do not comprehend my luck to have such a Sinless, Divine Philosopher wanting to share such wisdom with me in MMS and countless other ways, but I pray that I maximize this incredible opportunity and work constantly to purify my desires to His satisfaction. JGD.

  5. Translation for a German friend: Nur er, der seine Wünsche, seine Mutlosigkeit und Verzweiflung abgelegt hat, kann Gleichmut erlangen (Loslösung).

I had to think about this saying for long time this morning and I saw my past like a movie. It was really dispassion I had to learn. I’ve seen my mountains and my valleys, the ways I had to go but through it all I’ve learned to love myself. I saw that the hand of God was guiding me through all this times and I’ve learned to depend upon His word. For me this world is a big university we all have to go through. Different classes and different things to learn. With the guidance of my Sadguru spiritual knowledge grows. We are all His children and our future is bright. Jaya Guru Datta.

Generally it is possible for yogi to have control over his desires. But a steady practice of detachment it is possible to be disassociated with despondency the result of unfulfilled desires. May our noble Sadguru enable us to shed the ‘vikaras’ of desires and have access to dispassion which is like yogified mysticism.

The path to attain dispassion by discarding desire and despondency is tough to practise. It is possible only with grace of God. May Jesus bless us all to discard desire and despondency to attain dispassion and serve the mankind like Mother Teresa.

    Acquire dispassion ~ 17 Aug 2012

Namaste Puttuji, thank You for the wonderful video. Acquiring dispassion is possible only by Sadguru’s grace. Only he, who has discarded desire and despondency can acquire dispassion. Thank You for the valuable quote Puttuji.Once practised to wish only for devotion towards and welfare of Sadguru instead of wishing for self and practising to accept whatever happens is by the wish of Sadguru discards desire and also despondency. There’s a saying ” Sivudi agna lenidi cheemainaa kadaladu”. And Siva is Guru Himself. And increases intimacy with Sadguru as devotion increases and wishing for self and expecting from Him decreases. Namaste Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You for this lesson, Puttuji! Reflecting on this message…dispassion is a requirement for spiritual upliftment. Keeping the mind balanced, without getting caught up and carried away in emotions, having the equipoise of mind is essential to serious sadhana. Often, desires keep sprouting whether we like it or not and then they carry our mind with them to explore the ways and means to fulfill those desires. Or, the mind revels in the imagined fulfullment of those desires. When desires don’t get fulfilled, we become despondent. But, when the desires do get fulfilled, we are happy initially only to be disappointed and despondent later on. Nothing pertaining to worldly ties can give us eternal joy – not children, not parents, not lover or husband, not friends, not wealth or reputation, not prestige. All of these are a roller coaster ride that end sooner or later. Neither we nor the people we love are here forever, plus everyone’s love is contingent on certain requirements.

The only way to get that equipoise of mind and acquire dispassion is to give up both desires and despondency. There are moments when we look at the Sathguru and experience dispassion towards the material world. We just need to seal that dispassion in, with constant practice. Desires are strong, sly, and they multiply quickly, but don’t die easily. Please bless us, Appaji, to give up desire and attachment. Obeisances at the Holy Lotus Feet!

    JGD Appaji
Only Sadguru can help and guide us to lead such a life. We can just pray for His compassion.
Desiring something in the future, being sorrowful about the past, will both make our present miserable. We need to live in the present.
Living in the present, we need to accept whatever we receive as a precious gift from Him. Then any situation will be equally blissful without any attachments.
