Jul 24: Preservation of humanity is the aim of dharma

Dharma of a river is to flow. Dharma of the wind is to blow. Dharma of the seed is to grow.

Every species in this planet knows how to preserve itself. From a seed comes a plant, which grows into a tree, which gives a fruit, which contains a seed, which grows into a plant. Apple seeds yield apple trees. Apple trees yield apple seeds. And the cycle continues. When a species loses its ability to preserve, to protect itself, and to procreate.. it becomes extinct.

The river flows into the ocean, then enters the underground water table, which springs out as a river. Or the ocean evaporates in the sun, then pours down as rain, which flows as the river. Imagine what will happen to a river.. if it does not flow. It will not be a river anymore. It dries up. That’s what happens when it doesn’t follow its dharma. Mankind is no exception. To preserve humanity is the dharma of humans. Here, humanity means kindness, graciousness and benevolence. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were great examples of mankind losing its humanity.

Open the news papers every morning.. and they are full of examples of how fast we are losing our humanity again and again. Are we risking the possibility of drying up like the river that refuses to flow? Not if we listen to His Holiness. Not if we realize that our dharma is to retain our humanity. “Dharma samsthapanaarthaya sambhavaami yuge yuge” committed Lord Krishna in the Dwapara Yuga. Krishna always keeps his commitment.. and is back in his latest avatara as our beloved Appaji in this Kali Yuga.

Dear Appaji, Please give us the will to live our dharma. Let us retain our humanity. You have shown us the way. We only have to follow you. We will.

    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttugam.

Dear Puttugamji, this is a very beautiful explanation of the complex term dharma. I think for us individuals it includes very much reducing our ego (ahamkara/mamakara: I and mine) gradually and to live more and more a life of contribution than of pursuing our petty individual goals. Then we will become really human… Dear Appaji, thank you for these valuable daily lessons how to improve ourselves to real dharmic human beings. Warm greetings from Germany

    • Srinivas Mullapudi, Houston, TX on July 24, 2012 at 2:01 pm

    Jaya Guru Datta:

Dear Swamiji, I am very impressed with the text. We are ever grateful to you for your struggle to keep us in right path through dharmic principles.

    Sri Guru Datta

    • sridevi on July 24, 2012 at 2:22 pm

We may consider Dharma as the rules and regulations laid down by God in order to make His children behave like human beings. May be His children need these because the creator also gave a pinch of illusion to His children.Anyway, God is doing it out of love for humanity as all the mothers and fathers do with their children in order to protect them. Because God, mothers and fathers want to see their children happy. The same with Appaji-deva’s words. Whatever He may say, it is always for our best. We may not know what is good for us, but He surely knows. And sometimes…..it is not so easy to follow……With His grace it will come.

Jaya Guru Hanuman, In the earlier messages we are told that Dharma means doing good to others and this message clearly explains the aim of dharma which is to preserve humamnity. By doing good to others we are doing good to ourselves. We cannot be happy and prosperous until the people around us are happy and prosperous. In Gita it is said that the whole universe sustains on the concept of Yajna. Yajna is a term that has not been properly understood. Only our Sadguru can help us understand this concept. In ritualistic approach it is doing a fire worship to please gods who send rains. When the concept of Yajna is taken and applied to our practical way of life it transforms to dharma. Yajna is underestanding the concept of inter-connectedness. It is giving and receiving. It is only when we give that we receive it. It is understanding that we can make progress only when everyone around us progresses, the city progresses, the state progresses, the country progresses, the whole world progresses. This is why Sri Swamiji always urges us to share with others. In this video, Sri Swamiji pointing towards water is very symbolic. One water droplet cannot progress forward but many droplets of water put together move forward. Humble prostrations to the lotus feet of Sri Swamiji.

    Om namo hanumate namaha

Without our knowledge, the MMS treaching us Dharma in a new way. The new generations can understand it with Visual,Audio and the text.
Very nice Bhajan. This is the bhajan album I was playing when my son was in ICU for 14 days after his birth .And I know the power of this album with my own experience.
This bhajan reminds me the value of human life by seeing my son & other infants in ICU.

What a beautiful reminder of our aim in this lifetime. Our dear Appaji shares these wonderful messages and reminders to ensure that we continue to be honest, caring individuals.
Let us do our path and allow our holiness to teach and guide us each and every moment…day…
    Jaya Guru Datta.

    • Niran on July 24, 2012 at 3:56 pm

As Lord Krishna,, in the form of Appaji says that the aim of dharma is to preserve humanity. Is it not the devotees dharma that he follows his master unconditionally ? That sadguru teaches us by his own actions. We only have to observe, learn and understand the subtle nuances hidden amongst them. Jai guru datta to that maha satguru.

    • on July 24, 2012 at 4:13 pm

Pranams to the Lotus feet of Pujya Sri Swamiji. With you blessing and Guidance, we’ll strive to lead life in the path of Dharma with righteousness, kindness and love towards all.

    Om Sri Datta Venkatesaaya Namaha
    Om Sri Venkatesaaya Namaha

Like the Sunflower turns towards Sun, similarly we all turn towards our Sadguru Deva. Like the sunrise happens every morning, OUR Sun rise happens with the darshan of Sri Swamiji through the MMS message, directing us to lead the life following Dharma.

  2. Jai Guru Datta.I understood from this message that Dharma is the bond which keeps human values intact. “Dharmasya Prabhurachyutaha” as said in Thousand names of Lord Vishnu, Appaji is taking care of Dharma by making all the devotees observe right conduct. The background bhajan on Lord Venkatesha is very well suited for the message and is a favourite bhajan of all devotees. Thankyou.

  3. JGD thank you Puttuji, you have given me food for thought. My dear Lord, I prostrate over and over to you for having assumed the glorious form of Sri Sachchidananda and for your compassion in showing us the path.

  4. JGD!! this video is awesome with a great moral for us.I always had fascination in knowing more about gandharva loka and whenever i listen to this bhajan of Pujya Sri Swamiji wihich says..”Edukondala Swamy Govinda….” i feel as if am in Gandharva loka itself. This Bhajan truly has some magic around which takes us to some other world which i felt many a times,As the message says if we all try to protect humanity may be this earth itself will be the place of heaven.

    • Hanuman Hoffman on July 24, 2012 at 6:10 pm

The opening mridangam is a pleasing wake up call. With Sadguru Deva calling Govinda how can one not be inspired to live a better life? The images of Sri Swamiji and the rushing water in the beginning to the visions of Lord Venkateshwara and the final passing of fluidity shows me that if I surrender to Him, the turbulent sea of this existence is only a deep as the knee. Jaya Guru Datta!
We can understand this wonderful MMS that following Dharma is a prerequisite for the preservation of Humanity. The beautiful bhajan lets us all feel how wonderful the life of all of us together could be when we all would follow Dharma with the help of Sri Swamiji.

Jaya Guru Dutta! Miracle is not when Sri Swamiji enters the Agni for worship, miracle is not when this message comes to me reinforcing what Sri Swamiji has taught me, miracle is when this message means something to all the devotees for various reasons. It is like the Sun filling in light everywhere. There is a sequence that led to my awe today: First, I saw on Facebook comments about how Hinduism is challenged from absurd arguments and for a moment thought I should write my comment underneath. I drew back, closed my eyes and chanted Aum Namo Hanumathe Namah: and thought writing back fiery comments is not my Dharma, but to pray. I thought I should not read such articles but only keep praying and it is my Dharma as a devotee of Sri Swamiji. Through this message Sri Swamiji is reassuring that I did right.

Second, I watched a few clips of Bhajagovindam (Adi Shankaracharya) and then a documentary on Sri Ramanujacharya. My thoughts were all around Venkatachalapathy and was wondering how long ago was that I visited Thirumala. There comes Sri Swamiji’s Nandana message with beautiful picture and bhajan on Lord Venkatachalapathy! My Koti Koti humble Pranaams at the Lotus Feet of Sri Swamiji and Sri Balaswamiji. Pranaams to dear Puttuji for explaining the inner meaning of Sri Swamiji’s message. Sreevidya

Yes without dharma the worth thing can happen like Nagasaki and Hiroshima, so let us lead a life of kindness and respect for all living beings that life can go on. The creation is so wonderfull and beautifull. Prostrations to the Creator .

JGD. Again Beloved Puttuji has blended together the meaning of the imagery of the video – the river, the wind, the flower and Swamiji’s pointing – into a bite-sized morsel that I can swallow. And further gives simple practical application by saying we can play our part in presevering humanity by being kind and gracious. Thanks Putuji, again and again.JGD.

    Jaya Guru Datta

What a beautiful first comment by Puttugam on the amazing video about Dharma. Through these MMS videos and beautiful explanation Pujya Guru Deva is teaching us our Dharma.
What differentiates between a human being from other beings is that humans have the capability to think and judge between right and wrong. Human birth is the top most in the evolution and also only through human birth we can attain moksha. Lucky are we to be under the tutelage of our Pujya Guru Deva Sri Swamiji. Let us all pray at the Lotus feet of Sri Swamiji that we will always remember and practice HH teachings.

    • Anand. T on July 25, 2012 at 6:19 am

    Jaya Guru Datta!

AIM OF DHARMA: Dharma – This word can indicate merit, good morals, righteousness, truth, Swadharma or a way of life. It’s true meaning, however, is ‘that which holds our true nature.’ It means that one should take a way of life and maintain that way of life, without slipping back from the high standards which one has previously set oneself.

    The dirt in the residence,
    The dirt in the dress,
    The dirt on the body,
    The dirt in the mind,
    Wise men are they,
    Who have not these dirt’s.

To teach how take care of the body, to teach everyone to love others like himself, to teach the people with undeveloped intellect to acquire qualities of love, morality, mercy, wisdom, co-operation and unity according to their climatic conditions through fictitious/non-fictitious stories, to teach higher behavior and conduct in food, advantages of sharing with others, food materials available and personal experiences, dress, manners, speech, residence, and sleep, though worship, prayers, and through fasting and pilgrimages, and through Yoga and Meditation practices, for self realization, these are the aims of all Dharma and religions.

Beings, living in water, beings that stand, creep, move about on lands and those that fly are the five divisions of the life of the world.

Among the several lives, those that first originated are the snails, crabs, frogs, fishes, and other creatures living in water. Those that appeared second are grass weeds, plants creepers and trees of the vegetable kingdom. Third came the worms, insects, beetles, ants, flies, mosquitoes, birds, and animals. These creatures with life have one or more sense perceptions according to the number of sense organs in their bodies. The sense organs are five in number and they are the tongue, the eye, the nose, the ear, and the skin or the exterior surface of the body. Some have one sense perception, some two, some three, some four, and some five according to the use and development of the number of side sense organs. The creatures with one sense perception evolve into those with two sense perceptions, then those with three, four and finally into those with five sense perceptions by slow process and gradual adaptations.

Hunger, wealth, and fame, are the root cause for the advancement of knowledge in this world. They are equally responsible for the obstruction in the further development and misuse of the knowledge.

Four kinds of swadharmas and actions of Human being are: The Industrialists, Laborers, Workmen, and Technicians all denote one and the same kind of men of action may be classified as Producers, Administrators, Advisers and Gurus.

PRODUCERS: Agriculturists, who develop production of food stuff, grow fruits, bearing trees and plants. Men employed in various useful trades like making household utensils, agricultural tools, dresses, writing tools, vehicles for transport etc.., are all producers.

ADMINISTRATORS: Drummers who announces news, Police, Village officials, Government officials, big Land lords, Ministers, Soldiers, Kings, and Emperors may all be classified under administrators.

ADVISERS: Medical men, scientists, and research persons and workers etc.., come under this category.

GURUS: Gurus are those who are able to discern and detect the various merits and demerits, benefits, and evils in all the aforesaid three fields of actions or activities and who are able to devise and advise ways and means of overcoming those evils and defects. Teachers of education, also come under this category.

Because of mutual co-operation in all the above four spheres of action, the world administration runs smooth.

If the various organs of the body perform their actions properly, then the body will be healthy and strong. Similarly if those that play their part in these four different spheres perform their duties/ Dharmas properly, then there will be no miseries in the world and all will live in plenty and happiness.

Divisions of various trades led to castes. Experience of trades becomes the basis of moral and legal codes, which became religion. Efficiency in action became refines. Experience of various kinds led to knowledge which refined became wisdom, capable of discernment.

For giving this opportunity to us, thank YOU “Datta Guru”! Thank YOU “Puttuji”!

    Sri Guru Datta!

JGD Appaji, the first thought that occurred to me as I was trying to undesratnd this MMS is the verse from Bhagavadgita “Yada yada hi dharmasya, Glanir bhavati bharata, Abhyutthanam adharmasya, Tadatmanam srjamyaham”. You, Appaji, have descended for us to elevate us. And in this mission, you have been doing and are still doing everything that it takes to make us follow Dharma. Your existence in human form is enough example for all us to learn how to live and tread the Dharmic path.
In this ordeal, we need to follow the master who is teaching us by examples. We need to follow you with unwavering faith and devotion so that you allow us to come to you, become one with you.

In the earlier MMS, you told us about Dharmic path, today, the purpose of Dharma has been revealed. If all of us can start following Dharma, first towards our own selves, then, to their immediate families, Dharma will surely be established and prevail.

A million thank yous for choosing so many of us and allowing us into your fold and for constantly helping us tread your path. It is really our good karma to be chosen by You-Incarnate of Datta Himself.

Edukondala Sami Govinda, Eedukalada neeku Govinda? The first time I heard this bhajan from Namarchana CD, I had tears in my eyes. The lyrics (if I may call them so) are splendid, they so beautifully describe Lord Venkatesha. Visualizing our handsome Datta Venkateshwara and listening to this bhajan makes me happy. The Utsava murthys, the way SDV’s picture is juxtaposed with the sunflower reminds me of the Sudarsana chakra that so many of us viewed in the Mysore skies when the temple was consecrated. Even as I recollect the image in my mind and write this, I have goose-bumps 🙂 Loved the MMS.
Thank you team for making such marvelous masterpieces and getting to them to us 🙂

    Jaya guru datta..

The MMS capsule amazes me at the thought process or planning that goes behind the making of this video. We all are aware that we are in Kaliyuga..where we read and hear that Dharma, the path to walk, is defintely going the downhill as compared to previous other yugas. There is no Guru greater than Our Sadguru (Dattatreya Himself) and there is no God greater than Venkateswara (in this kaliyuga). The video gives darshan of the two greats who are verily the one and the same.
Parama Pujya Appaji and our beloved Datta Peetham are the torchbearers in propagating this virtue to Keep the Dharma alive and continue in generations to come. It is our onerous responsibility as an individual, devotee/follower and a social being to realize the need to tread the virtous path in one’s own way with the values that were imbibed.

Praying His Holiness to bless us to remain steadfast in following His Path of Dharma and guard us from going astray..

Meaning: There is no other God like VenkatEsa to seek refuge for protection and there is no other God equal to Lord Venkatesha.
Appaji, You are that Lord Venkatesa, came in the form of Appaji, to redeem Your children who are longing for You. The splendid form of Utsava murthys in this video, along with the mesmerizing Hindolam in Your (Venkatesa) voice is so uplifting, that it is taking me to an other world! Stating the aim of Dharma in such simple terms is possible only for Appaji. May we follow Your words and aid in preserving Dharma! Sri Guru Datta.
