A coconut tree believes that it creates the breeze by shaking its leaves. “Ha ! What a foolish belief ?” we ask. This MMS strikes at the root of such a self-centric paradigm (belief system).

    |A| Aunty prepares a variety of dishes for a party. Guests like the curd rice, but the sweet is bad. After the guests leave, aunty says “I worked hard on the curd rice.. I ensured the curds were fresh, slightly overcooked the rice, garnished it just right. Am so happy I did it right. But, the sweet was a disaster.. must’ve been the milk, or the sugar wasn’t right.. it just happened.. chance”. |B| Have you heard children talk about their exams? If they score well, they say “I did well”. If not, they say “It happened to be a tough paper”. |C| The scene is similar in the workplace, and even in our relationship with God. When the going is good, we say “I am doing absolutely fine !”. When the going gets tough, we say “I don’t know why God is doing this to me. Why me ?”

We believe ‘we make our successes happen’.. take all the credit. We believe ‘our failures happen to us’.. pass on all the blame. We internalize our successes and externalize our failures. So ?

So.. we are always right, even when we are wrong. We know everything, even when we don’t. There is nothing more for us to learn. With bloated egos, vanity rules our lives. Arrogance blinds our senses.. like it did to the demon kings Mahabali and Tarakasura. This is why this MMS invokes Skanda and Upendra. Both these Gods presented themselves as small in front of the extra large egos of these asura Kings.. who took them for granted. Finally what ‘happen’ed to these mighty egos? Mahabali was destroyed by Vamana – The dwarf – also called Upendra. Tarakasura was destroyed by Skanda – The young commander of the deva sena – also called Muruga. Gods will prevailed.

Well, it is okay to say “I will do it”.. that is self-confidence.. (See MMS 69 on Pray & Work). But if it escalates to say “It is my will and wish and I don’t care if it hurts others”.. that is arrogance. At that level, we disrespect the divinity in people around us. We lose control to our ego, to our conceit. We may become narcissistic. Is our Sathguru happy seeing us in such a shape ?

Watch His Holiness’s expression in this MMS ( 00:16 to 01:03 ).. for almost half of this clip. Did you go back to the video to take a closer look? Watch His eyes. Can you see the tough Skanda there ? Move forward by another frame and watch His face as His Holiness says “Everything happens only by the will of God”.. don’t mistake that calm pleasantness for approval. Look deeper.. Can you see the humble Vamana (Upendra) in those eyes ?

Thanks a million, Appaji ! For this paradigm changing experience.. for keeping our egos in check. We believe your ‘will’ will prevail. In that belief, we will not get distracted by anxieties and worries of what will happen.. that is upto you. We will keep our minds where our hands are.. in the present moment. We will have no time for bouquets or brickbats.. to praise or to blame. Whatever we do, we will do in a spirit of seva at your lotus feet. This we believe is excellence. Engaging in such Nishkamya Karma, we will follow you to our fulfillment.
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

  1. Well, we say this phrase isn’t new to us . Is it? It comes to our aid when we commit a mistake and want to blame some one else , as puttuji explains so beautifully ! Do we really mean it at all times ? True devotion consists in accepting that whatever happens to us is by God’s will.. If it is unfavourable to us , we must be as equally happy as we would if it was in our favour ..It would be great if we could understand that  God is always neutral and never partial …He just gives us what we deserve..   Some times ,we’re not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be…In that case we just need to remind ourselves that the will of God will never take us to where the grace of God will not protect us…Complete faith in Sadguru who is the visible god to us , is what we need to aim at acheiving …

JGDH Puttuji! In this message Appaji means business!!!! He is clearly stating that all that is happening/happened/will happen is pre-ordained and destined at His Will!!!! All we need to accept and try to understand the reason and appreciate the same!! Then we will be balanced in our thinking, behavior and attitude! I understand and accept that it is best to place ourselves in HIS Hands and surrender to HIM!!!He will take care of us! Thank you Appaji! Love you and grateful to you, for being in my life! JGDH!!!

All what happens make sense, because it happens only by the will of God. It is important to remeber always this truth, because sometimes I can’t understand, why things happen. Then I must respekct, that they happen with the will from God, I only can’t see and understand it. But when I know, that it makes sense, I can see it with other eyes, and the – sometimes – I begin to understand. But I can’t understand when I think, that something is wrong or only an accident.

    • on August 26, 2012 at 9:44 am

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, Reading Puttugi’s comments this morning, I was reminded of your July 8 teaching where you said that when we make mistakes, knowingly or unknowingly, we must accept them. Here, you point out to us that too often we don’t want to accept when things go wrong that we might be at fault, but instead to blame others or God. But you have already reminded us in another earlier message that God is always victorious and in today’s message that everything happens only by the will of God. These two reminders really take the sting out of our failures if we allow them and they can become healing balms. First, if everything happens only by the will of God, then God allowed us to make our mistakes for a reason, we must realize this and accept that there is some lesson or karma to be fulfilled here–we must accept our mistakes as you have said. If we have faith that God is always victorious, then we need only to surrender our contrition, sorrow, fear, whatever emotions, consequences our poor actions have brought and ask God to show us how to do better fully knowing that God is with us and that it will not be our tiny egos that win in the end but God! Even if we have trouble admitting to those around us that we might be wrong or at fault, we can’t hide from God. So if we have done something wrong, openly admitting it to God will bring us the first step towards healing. You have told us that whatever we ask God says “So be it…” How beautifully you are weaving your are building upon each previous lesson!

BANG ON!! Everything I say is an understatement. I experienced it more than a number of times. I know how much I resisted God’s will. But today, my arrogance has now become humility. My ego is now squashed. My so called intelligence is now absolutely good for nothing. But the day I experienced this powerhouse of an MMS, I realized that I own only the process of doing HIS will. He WILLS and I do. It makes me proud in a good way that I am the chosen one to carry out HIS WILL. Yes Appaji, you know how you made me see the truth of this MMS.
Today, I have no regrets. All I know is that, each of those incidents were lessons that I learnt and that they wil remain with me forever.
When I resisted, everything was topsy-turvy and when I accepted, everything is smooth. Appaji, You are THE BOSS!! JGD!!

Let us perform our duties but realize that we are only instruments of the Divine will. Let offer our actions to Sadguru. Let us accept that whatever our circumstances in life, good or bad, Sadguru is in control of our destiny. So , why fear or worry? Who is more capable or more protective than our Sadgurudeva? Surrender, trust, have faith, do your dharmic duty, and He will do the rest!

JGD! I’m trying to exercise that whenever some success or happy moment occurs to me that I remind myself immediately of the puppet player in the background, the true master of everything. Yet I pray to Sadgurudeva that step by step, I remember this at all times rendering seva and that Iunderstand better if there is still something like a free will or if it’s only a paradox which is fully true: if ‘I’ am a tiny part of the Divine and ‘I’ think of something, at the same time it’s Him thinking! So, in the end it’s not contradictory!?! What a beauty and majesty lies in this saying! SGD!

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

This MMS reminded me of a beautiful parable shared by a mahatma regarding the will of God –

“In a certain village there lived a very pious weaver. Everyone loved and trusted him. The weaver used to go to the market to sell his clothes. If a customer asked the price of a piece of cloth, he would say: “By the will of Rama, the yarn costs one rupee; by the will of Rama, the labour costs four annas; by the will of Rama, the profit is two annas; by the will of Rama the price of the cloth as it stands is one rupee and six annas.” People used to have such confidence in him that they would immediately pay the price and take the cloth. The man was a true devotee. At night after supper he would sit for a long time and meditate on God and repeat His holy ‘name.’

Once it was late in the night. The weaver did not yet go to sleep. He was sitting alone in the courtyard near the entrance, smoking. A gang of robbers was passing that way. They wanted a porter and seeing this man, they dragged him away with them. Then they broke into a house and stole a great many things, some of which they piled on the poor weaver’s head. At this moment the watchman came. The robbers at once ran away, but the poor weaver was caught with his load. He had to spend that night in confinement. Next morning he was brought before the magistrate. The people of the village, hearing what had happened, came to see the weaver. They unanimously declared, “Your Honour, this man is incapable of stealing anything.” The magistrate then asked the weaver to describe what had occurred. The weaver said: “Your Honour, by the will of Rama, I was sitting in the courtyard. By the will of Rama, it was very late in the night. By the will of Rama, I was meditating upon God and repeating His holy ‘name.’ By the will of Rama, a band of robbers passed that way. By the will of Rama, they dragged me away with them. By the will of Rama, they broke into a house. By the will of Rama, they piled a load on my head. By the will of Rama, I was caught. Then by the will of Rama, I was kept in prison and this morning I am brought before your Honour.” The magistrate, seeing the innocence and spirituality of the man, ordered him to be acquitted. Coming out, the weaver said to his friends, “By the will of Rama, I have been released.” Whether you live in the world or renounce it, everything depends upon the will of Rama. Throwing your whole responsibility upon God, do your work in the world. ”

This MMS also reminds of Hanuman who always considered himself as the instrument of Sri Rama. Hanuman always felt that his strength, power, knowledge are all derived from Rama. He always considered himself as the servant of Rama. Hanuman removed the sorrow of Sita, brought Lakshman back to life more than once by bringing Sanjeevani, helped Sugreeva acheive his kingdom, crowned Vibhishana and many more always considering himself as an instrument of Rama. What a beautiful example we have before us to correct our defective personalities.

Let us always remember and pray – “Oh Lord! you are the master, I am your servant; You are the doer, I am your instrument” and strive to raise to the level of Hanuman and make our Guru proud.

Humble prostrations to the lotus feet of Sri Swamiji who is the energy that does all the work.

I do not remember where from I learned it, but it is helpful for me to think that whatever and whenever something does no go well it is due to some difficulty in myself. just today morning sri swamiji let me feel how I can learn from mistakes when I am able to recognize and accept them as my wrong doing/feeling/thinking without getting trapped in despondency. to know and constantly remember that everything happens only by the will of god is so deeply appeasing and pacifying.

Namaste Puttuji, nice video. Everything happens only by the will of God. One or other time, every person even who do not believe in God, experiences this fact that everything is pre planned. One who believes in God, if accepts this truth in every move, one can be happy even in sad moments and also helps in surrendering to God leading to Realization. In day to day life too, it is helpful not to feel hopeless in lost moments or not to become blind in one’s victory. Thank You and namaste Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You for this lesson, Puttuji! This is not the first time I’m hearing this, but when this comes from the Sathguru, it becomes gospel, it becomes real to us. The serenity prayer comes to mind “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”. It also brings to mind the MMS video as noted in Puttuji’s commentary (MMS #69 ) that we should work like everything depends on us.

So, there are things we cannot change – for instance, we can’t choose our parents, children or relatives, we have no control over when we are born, when we die, etc. These are definitely the will of God. What about things we can change? Things like where we go to college, what we do for a living, what kind of friends we have or what kind of food we eat? We believe that it is our will that comes in to play, but is it really? When we look back at our lives, we can see how everything was interconnected and played together to put us where we are. What we believed was our will is, in reality, part of a bigger scheme of things.

Nothing happens without the will of God. I remember hearing somewhere that not a blade of grass moves without the will of God. So, is it the will of God that we eat drink and make merry because we have the resources to? May be. Until the point that God wills that we be endowed the knowledge that eating moderately and discarding pleasures is important for a healthy life. God willed that we learn, but if we ignore the lesson, the Divine Will will need to teach us lessons so we can learn. When Divine Will teaches us that fire burns, we can’t blame God if we ignore that awareness and put our hand in fire.

Please bless us Sathgurudeva so we can be aware of and accept God’s will at all times without any doubts or questions! Obeisances to the Holy Lotus Feet!

JGD. Yes Puttuji, Swamiji’s eyes are amazing in this MMS. I pray my unconstructive tendencies fade into nothingness under His gaze and that we become fully aligned with God’s will. JGD.

“Everything happens only by the will of God”….. God balances the entire universe, so everything happens only by His will. We should be aware of this fact and be happy with whatever comes to us in life as will of God.

J.G.D. this mms makes me think of Lord Surya. Imagine if the sun god would be absent. There would be no sunrise. What would be the consequence? For mankind, for nature itself?

This picture helps me to understand the unseen presence and the divine will behind everything.

Great peace is to be found with this realization. The greatest peace. Disallowing complacency I am able to go through life without blaming nor accepting doership. Letting go and letting God. Trusting in His will. I grew up in Christian culture where “Let thy will be done” was commonly spoken. Tell me, when isn’t His will being done? Jaya Guru Datta

Before knowing Appji i read “not a single grasshalm moves without the will of God.” God or Gurudeva is the last instance! Only we have free will and can make choices, and often we blame others if it arranges us and we don’t want to recognize our failures, helas … Once i did an exercise: everything i accused others of , in my mind, i told to myself ‘ it is you, who is like this’ , this was a very good way to see where i was, and often i was terrified about my thinking and reproching of others and had to tell myself ‘ yourself are like this’, not easy but very helpfull. Jai Guru Datta.

Welch klare, einfache Aussage.

    JGD Appaji
Appaji’s eyes are looking right inside us!
The waves exist because of the ocean..the mountains, plants exist because of the earth.. the creation/we exist, because of the creator. Hence His will only prevail. We need to offer our our work without any thoughts, desires at His Lotus Feet, then He will bestow us with what we need (not what we may desire). He knows the best. We just need to let go and follow His teachings, and enjoy the ride.
