    July 31: Prostrations and prayers

To prostrate to our Parents, Guru or God, is to bow down to them in reverence. When we do so, our mind is serene & joyful. To pray is to be in ‘communion’ (spiritual union) with the Lord we are praying to. A little child is always joyful in the warmth of its mother. Likewise, we are always joyful when we pray, because in our heart, we are together with our beloved Lord. Being joyful in prayer and prostration may come naturally to some of us. But not to all. Perhaps, this is why our Gurudeva has blessed us with this MMS Videos. He wants all of us to benefit from our prayers and prostrations.

Suppose you get into a bus with a heavy bag on your shoulders and you have to stand. If you are intelligent, you will put that bag down and enjoy the journey. You may read a book, talk to someone, be more productive in that travel time. If you choose to carry that weight, you will suffer that pain in your shoulders and spoil the charm of the journey. Similarly, when you pray, if you are intelligent, you will let go your anxieties and worries because you know the Lord within you is managing them for you. You will be joyful in prayer because you are in communion with your Lord. On the other hand, if you choose to be worried and tensed when you are in prayer, you will get nothing out of it. Being joyful during prayer is what makes it effective. With practice, the mind learns to look at every single action as prayer offered to the Lord. Work becomes worship. A happy mind is able to focus better on the goals it seeks to achieve (MMS 52), and is therefore more successful.

To the unintelligent, prostration and prayer are acts of ‘communication’ and not ‘communion’ with their Lord. Communication is a transaction that involves exchange of information between two different individuals. This belief that you are ‘separate’ from the ‘other’ you are praying to reduces prayer into a transaction. So, if the ‘other’ does not live up to your expectations, the transaction stops, and the relationship fails. This is why some people who go after Ganesha today, will go after another God tomorrow. Should our relationship with God or Guru be so transactional? Is there room for joy in such prayer? Nothing comes out of such a ritual. Being joyful in prayer means seeing the Lord inside of us when we pray. We are in communion…… not in communication mode.

The greatness of our Appaji is that He practices what He preaches. When doing Surya Puja, He is joyfully in ‘communion’ with Suryadeva. When doing Navavarna Puja, He is joyfully in ‘communion’ with the divine Mother. Following Him doesn’t mean carrying lamps on our head like His Holiness does in the MMS. We only have to stop carrying our worries and anxieties and be joyful in prostration and prayer, because we are always joyful in communion with our Gurudeva.

Thank you Appaji for such a caring MMS. Breathtaking visuals and the lovely Bhajan ‘He Surya Deva Maampahi’ sung by Arcot Brothers (Album : Swamiji 70, CD 1, Track 23), make this a blissful experience. With joyful prostrations at the lotus feet of His Holiness,
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

    July 31st : Prostrations & Prayers

“Ganapatiyu Ninne, Sri Saccidananda Shubha murthy Ninne.”
Yellow background, Our Sadguru in prayer, offering & holding three diyas, was a moment which made us spell bound.

We are blessed with an opportunity to bow to Our Sadguru.
Prayers that we see His tatva in all.

From the rising of the sun,
to the going down of the same the Lord’s name, is to be praised.

The beautiful handiwork of the creator, i.e. the blue lake, the mountains, the clouds, the green grass, have all been made to be at His service & bow to Him joyfully.
We are His children. He teaches us get rid of ego & bow, respect & love All.

It has also been noticed, when we prostrate or pray, we get a lot of joy.
We must all understand, that it is a blessing to get an opportunity to pray & prostrate & hence, to derive the joy of it, we must do it joyfully.

The colour combinations in the video and the music are brilliant.

We will bow joyfully Sadguru, to You, Our Lord, to Sri Balaswamiji, to Puttu Gam Sri & to all living beings around us.

“Jaya Guru Datta,” we sing joyfully.

  1. O Sri Suryadeva your brilliance is the reflection of the effulgence of my SadGuru Sachchidananda. With joyousness and prostrations to His Lotus Feet, I offer my sincere prayer that I also shine like you in ever aspect of my existence. Om Bhaskaraya Namah. Jaya Guru Datta

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

What a beautiful way to start the day. This video energizes us with amazing visuals. The raising sun which brings light to the whole world aptly shows the significance of Guru. The scenery with moving clouds, serene river, lush green mountains and Sri Swamiji offering prayers take us to a different world. This video reminded me of Sri Swamiji’s amazing bhajan which describes the omnipresent mother goddess and how nature decorates mother goddess:

    devi viradrupa vainatti niku
    prakrti sarvammu mustābu ceyu

    udayinchu ravi kalla parani pettu…

Here is an extract from Sri Swamiji’s speech about how to enjoy nature and forget all our worries – “One who worships Nature automatically worships the Mother Goddess. Look at the beautiful scenes of nature. Look at the far away mountains. Get closer and look at the lush trees and other vegetation. Lie down under the open skies and look up at the starts, the clouds floating by, the rain drops gently coming down, or look at the flying birds in the evening time. They fly in groups, so gracefully. You are always only looking at your own children, family members, worried about your bags and belongings. Look at the river of people flowing out of a cinema theater. Look at the mass of crowds moving slowly. Sit for a moment and watch the flowing river. Listen to its sounds. Let the water from the faucet flow down to fill up a drum. Listen to that sound. If you observe Mother Nature and worship Her, She will bless you.”

The message beautifully describes that we should offer our prayers joyfully. We can be happy by looking at the beautiful nature around us. When we are happy every prayer that comes out from us will be joyful.

Humble prostrations to the lotus feet of Sri Swamiji who like the sun dispels our darkness.

    Om namo hanumate namaha

    Om Suryaaya Namaha
    Om Bhaanavee Namaha

We pray Sri Swamiji to bless us with Contentment as the desires are the main reason for unhappiness. If we are blessed with Contentment, then It would also show up in the prayers that we do. As most of the time when we pray God, we also pray for fulfilment of certain desires.

We Pray and thank to the Lotus feet of Sadguru Deva for providing us with such great messages.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji! What a sweet message this morning! I love to see you by the water offering prayers to the sun…Once in Mysore you said in your lectures about Datta that Anagha was a master of Rasa Tantra–that she was able to control her emotions perfectly. What a great lesson to teach us through prayer how to actively bring joy into our hearts and mind. May we all learn to be like Anagha and be able to actively call upon that natural bliss inside us that are your trying so hard to bring to us as we worship God….

Beautiful Bhajan with serene and beautiful images of the nature in the background, shifts our mind from mundane to divine. When the mind is calm, Sadgurudevas message echoes in our ears. Our compassionate & beloved Appaji is teaching HIS children in a most perfect way out of HIS love for all of us. Let’s learn and adopt each message to elevate ourselves to become better human beings. Koti pranams and thanks to Pujya Appaji. JGD

    Jai Guru Datta,
I´m deeply touched by this wonderful video and I want to thank you, Puttugam, for releasing these messages for us. I live in Germany wich is far away from the Ashram in Mysore and it´s difficult for me to come there physically, though I consider the Ashram as my spiritual home. So if I can connect with Sri Swamiji this way it is very helpful and I´m greatful for this opportunity. It helps strengthening the bond. Thank you and JGD

Such a simple and deep message. We take for granted praying daily without realizing how we pray. Swamiji, this message teaches us how to pray is as important as other philosophical discussions. The background colorful scenery and Swamiji’s face shining like a sun is gripping. It is amazing how Swamiji gives messages in different languages which indicates that He keeps His devotees from all background in His mind always.

Thank you for the great video and detailed explanation about it. It is truly a great feeling when we offer our prayers and prostrations in joy, we can feel the communion between the atma and paramatma. I pray to Pujya Guru Deva to bless us with such state of mind always.

  5. Jaya Guru Datta Puttuji,
This is a beautiful video. I just realized one unusual feature in it. The moving colorful clouds in the sky are not reflected in the waters. The reflection shows only still, white clouds! Perhaps the still, pure white clouds show the nature of Sadgurudeva’s heart while the bright multi-colored racing clouds show the nature of our minds that are never steady and are always colored by passions. I pray joyfully and sincerely that our hearts should merge in purity and stillness with the heart of our Datta Sadguru Sri Swamiji. Thank you for this MMS Video and the enlightening explanation of it by you in such loving and caring words.

Puttuji you convey Sadgurudeva’s messages so simple and easy to understand. How deep meanings each and every action of our Sadguru has!!

    • Archana Penukonda on August 1, 2012 at 5:20 am

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You, Appaji, for this enlightening message. Prayers and worship calm us down, but we often take our worries and anxieties and emotions with us to our prayers, believing that we’re simply dealing with a rough day. I’m beginning to understand more and more through Your messages that how we feel is completely up to us, it’s a choice. So, sitting down for prayers by emptying the mind and ignoring all emotions by remembering that they have no real existence will help us pray with a calm mind. It is probably not easy to experience communion with the Lord, but Guru’s grace and consistent practice will get us there.
Your commentary also reminds me of Mata Jayalakshmi’s dedication towards household chores. Every chore around the house was an act of workshop for Mata Jayalakshmi. If we are to follow in Her footsteps, every act in our daily life should also be considered an act of worship. Also, it feels like offering prayers and worship joyfully is the panacea for all disturbances of the mind. For example, instead of taking our anger with us to our prayers, we could do a little pranayama and then offer our prayers joyfully – eliminating the anger in the process.
How these gems of messages flow from our Sadguru!!! Obeisances to the Holy Lotus Feet! Aren’t we the most blessed souls on earth! With Your grace, we will sincerely put these instructions in to practice and move closer to Your Lotus Feet, one step at a time.

    • on August 1, 2012 at 5:22 am

JGD Appaji. This MMS is true and I have experienced it. Being true to God and offerring prayers with an open and calm mind is indeed miraculous. You have given us innumerable examples in so many speeches of how we should concentrate on God and not bother about anything else that is external God and us.
In my experience, praying for “something” is selfish, but praying for “being able to have strength and focus to do something” is much more powerful. It does help me gather a lot of courage and determination. My partner to achieve my goal is listening to my fav Guru Gita and Vishnu Sahasranama. They immediately give me a push to start things on a good note 🙂

Will always remember this advice. It can only work good for us. Thanks for being so protective and concerned about us 🙂

JGD Puttuji. Your analogies are self explanatory. They make me see the essence of the MMS in totality. Thank you Puttuji!! It is absolutely thrilling to comprehend the essence of your explanation. Each time I read, I see something new in it 🙂 Your efforts are truly truly appreciated. Thanking you a million times 🙂

  6. Dear and Respected Puttugam.
Appaji’s Marathi language is so original. As if a Marathi person is speaking.
Puttugam, You have so beautifully described on the message today. It is like Bhashyam on the message. Since each message has so many meanings in so many dimensions, detailed explanation from Puttugam gives authenticity to what we perceive and understand. Pranams.

Our Datta Guru Sri Swamiji is really Giving us a wonderful experience through the MMS. This message is very bright and great. Our sadgurudeva is shining bright as Suryadeva. He is giving light to all of us to remove our darkness. We are blessed.

  9. Sri Swamiji’s messages are pregnant with fullsome meaning. Prostration is a part of prayer and it amounts to total ‘samarpan’ and furthermore the contact with the mother earth physically adds to the spiritual feel with which it is done. Whatever may be the purport it stems from a noble tradition that is Indian.

Jai gurU Datta, Appaji. A wonderful message from Pujya Gurudeva! Sometimes, without our knowledge, when we are doing japa, or chanting an Ashtottara, our voice becomes stern, and the face becomes stiff, etc, etc. …! If there are children around, they will probably get scared and run away. Probably the Lord also will run away, looking at our scary face 🙂 Divine Father is joy! Chanting His name is Joy! The video visuals, Pujya Appaji’s bhajan and the message are meticulously presented. Thank you, Appaji, for mentoring us every single day with these invaluable messages. Sri Guru Datta.

    Prostrations and Prayers ~ 31 July 2012

Namaste Puttuji, wonderful video of golden yellow color sky, Sri Swamiji’s composition as background music, beautiful photographs of Sri Swamiji offering prayers to Sun God. Prostrations and prayers should always be offered joyfully. Sri Swamiji specified in Guru Gita that one should not feel shy while offering prostrations to God or Guru not bothering who is looking. Prayers when offered heart fully with joy gives extensive result and improves concentration and enhances love towards God.
Story of Sri Krishna tulabharam tells us how important is heart ful prayers. When Satyabhama who is proud of her wealth tries to weigh Lord Sri Krishna with golden blocks, silver etc in the game played by Sage Narada to reduce her pride as advised by Lord Sri Krishna. She fails to weigh The Lord with 1000’s of kg’s of her wealth. Where as Rukmini, an incarnation of Godess Sri Lakshmi weighs Him with one twig of tulasi  with whole hearted devotion. Whole hearted devotion with no intention to show off always over weighs show off devotion and prayers offered sadly expecting better results.  Thank You and namaste Puttuji.

Beautiful message, prostrations and prayers are done to help ourselves in difficulties and help ourselves when we are happy also. We tend to perceive only lacuna in life and in this process we are not able to enjoy whatever we are gifted with. With every prostration and prayer i like to thank God for whatever HE has blessed me with, for whatever i’m today enjoying my life and want to seek HIS help for those situations I’m not able to handle with. Thank You Jesus for everything You had blessed me with and the protection You will give me forever. Thank YOU so much oh lord for being in my life to guide me always in right path and everything You had blessed me with.
