Scholarship should breed humility :     Lovely message Gurudeva ! Lovely !   I have often wondered at this paradox..   A mango tree creates more mango trees before it dies.  An arrogant scholar takes his scholarship to his grave.  He cannot even pass on the benefits of his scholarship to one more person.   I have often asked myself why is this so.  In this MMS, you have given us the answer, Gurudeva!   If my knowledge leads me to arrogance and ego, no one wants to accept me or my teaching, and therefore what I know becomes useless to the world around me.  What is the value of such scholarship ?  Nothing.     On the other hand, if whatever I know, leads me to understand how much I don’t know, then.. awareness of my own ignorance propels me to learn more, and keeps me a lifelong student. I am willing to listen to others, and learn from them. That humility makes me acceptable to all around me.  They want to listen to me, and try what I say. This way, my knowledge is of service to people around me.  That is when I accomplish the purpose of my existence.  Very much like that mango tree that created more mango trees before it died.  Brilliant thought , Appaji !

Many years ago, Appaji, I remember a lecture you gave in which you said the best thing we could do if we wanted knowledge was to pranam before your picture or padukas and surrender to you all that we think we know about something and ask you to empty us of that knowledge and fill us with correct knowledge. It is such a helpful thing to do, even when we are just dealing with personal matters that we think we understand….Jaya Guru Datta for this message and this reminder of that teaching….

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You for the dictum, Appaji! It has been a folly all along to attribute any merit or accomplishment solely to our hard work. While hard work is necessary, it is only the blessing of the Almighty that is letting us work hard and is easing the path towards our goal. Any knowledge or scholarship we possess – big or small – is the blessing of the Guru. Please bless me to always remember this message, Appaji! Obeisances to the Holy Lotus Feet!

JGD, Appaji! So true. Please bless me that I don’t get stuck in thinking that I have overcome this ego, thus proving my ego again. And what about the ego about writing ‘adequate’ comments?
And again, above all: who am ‘I’? ‘I’ loved the Vedanta lessons in London 2000 dedicated to this question. Om namo hanumate namah!

Jaya Guru Hanuman, Thank you for the beautiful message Swamiji. Hanuman is the epitome of humility. He has studied all vedas, shastras, is the master of nine types of devotion and ashta siddhis but still he considers himself to be servant of Rama…..what a beautiful example this message bring to our mind……We should all strive to be like Hanuman and raise to his level…….Om namo hanumate namaha

  6. JGDD Appaji…please accept a coconut from me at this time as i pray for You to continue to crush this ego until is it no more…Om Namo Hanumante Namah! SGDD

    Jaya Guru Datta Appaji,
Thank you for this wonderful message. It is by God’s grace that we are blessed with knowledge and wisdom. We should therefore use this gift to help others and make a difference in the world, otherwise, what is the use? It is useless and not good if one simply taps his chest and praises himself and expects praise from others. Like our dear Hanumanta, who is all knowledgeable and a true scholar himself, we should be humble and strive for the welfare of others.

Ego blinds off all merits in us. May lord protect us all from ego and bless with discrimination capability between self respect and ego

jgd Raj Rajeshwari Maa with Your grace only a human gets knowledge and wisdom. It should not result in ego because in ego lies the fall. A tree full of fruits shows its charm by bowing down to earth. Respect to teacher and Lord should make the scholar humble, then he will be able to enjoy and share his knowledge with others otherwise like empty vessel (thothaa chanaa baajey ghanaa ) thank You Swami ji for beautiful lesson onhn sgd
