  1. Excellent metaphor! Go back to the visuals above. See those lush green plants? See them growing straight up towards the sun even though they are on sloppy ground? See those trees.. growing straight up towards the sunlight ? Isn’t that why they are rooted firmly under the ground, are able to endure rough weather & provide the nourishment we require? Watch Gurudeva’s index finger as it points to the sky.. it is upright. Yes. Uprightness is the only way to excellence.

In material & spiritual practice, uprightness is about righteousness. Any other path disturbs from within by creating feelings of fear, guilt, despair & repentance. Also, one has to pay the price in the external world- as he sows so he reaps. A true sadhak must avoid such dissipation of energy.

Dear Gurudeva, Through your avatara, you’ve shown us the righteous path to excellence in the inner & the outer world. We will follow your example & rise towards our fulfilment. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji! To be upright means to be in a vertical position, to be pointing towards the sky as Sri Swamij is doing in this video. It seems Sri Swamiji is reminding us to always be trying to improve, to climb higher, not on the social ladder or financially, but on up beautiful natural green stairs in the background which seem to represent a more natural way of growth–Sadhana? Seva? Satsang? Charity? One who is “upright” has good morals, is honest and possesses integrity. They don’t steal, lie, cheat or have hidden agendas. Sri Swamiji has been guiding up those steps day by day with his MMS’s leading us towards excellence. We are very blessed! Sri Guru Datta!

There is a song which a similar message: it’s not a problem to fall down, but you must every time get up. I love this text because it showes: you can make mistakes, life can make you fall down, all is possible, that isn’t a problem. The problem begins, when you don’t get up after a fall.

Uprightness is being true to oneself with absolutely no compromise. We see such uprightness in Swamiji, as we see it in Hanuman and Ganapati. There are no mental weaknesses or aberrations whatsoever which are caused by a selfish personal agenda. Whatever upright people do, they do wholeheartedly, with absolute conviction. Hence their actions are pure and the results are excellent. In the race between Subrahmanya and Ganapati, Subrahmanya was ambitious and over-confident when he took off on his peacock. Ganapati knew his limitations and did his best within his means. His mind was pure. He won the race. The only thought in the mind of Hanuman is to be loyal in his mission of serving Rama. He always put his best foot forward, did his very best under all circumstances with no doubt or hesitance and was successful always. Swamiji’s only goal in life is to fulfill the task assigned to him by his mother and guru Sri Jayalakshmi Mata. He fulfills his responsibility to the letter, not resting even for a moment, not leaving any stone unturned. His success is exemplary. Jaya Guru Datta

Jaya Guru Datta Appaji. Indeed we are the trees shown in the video as we strive toward uprightness.
This is truely a meaningful lesson with all the images in this video as they depict the meaning of this lesson.
Thank you Appaji for explaining this further for our understanding….

Jai Guru Datta Appaji – The fire in any earthen lamp is always steady when there is no external wind/disturbances. The trees/plants always grow against gravity towards the Sun. They may be temporarily affected with wind/storms, but resume their upright position/growth soon after.

Pujya Gurudeva – Puttuji’s explanation are spot on, as always! We perceive chaos around us, because we are not balanced inside. Please give us the balance and steadfastness to be focused on your Lotus feet always against all hurdles, so we keep our minds from straying away.

The Zodiac Tunes are immensely helping in silencing the wavering minds. Thanks a million Appaji!

Being upright is not being swayed by emotions, which are always subjective. Being upright is doing what needs to be done, as per Sadguru’s command, no questions asked, no doubts entertained. It is tough but required to reach excellence. As Hamsa rightly explained at puttugam.org, the Guru is trying to disengage us from our body, mind, and the material world through developing in us detachment and adherence to steady practice. This is the way to build uprightness to perfection. Thank you Puttu Gam for these highly enlightening daily MMS videos from SGS. These are awesome. Jaya Guru Datta

All the 134 days in the immediate past have been precious lessons to keep us grounded and stand upright. Each of those MMSs if followed with diligence and honesty, we are bound to remain upright. Appaji is putting in efforts to bring out these MMS with just one obvious intent and that is to mold us into good human beings. All we need to do is put in 10 minutes of our time into these MMS and introspect. Try to remember them and slowly practise them. Appaji, give us the wisdom to remember these lessons always. JGD, SGD!!

    • on October 12, 2012 at 12:01 pm

This particular MMS is also an excellent Corporate lesson. So many professionals among us are expected to be upright in the way we communicate and deal with timelines. Just by being upright at all times, we are able to climb up the ladder. So, why not use the same uprightness in personal lives so that we grow up spiritually and become what Appaji wants us all to be? It is after all a matter of putting in 10 minutes of our waking hours and we ought to make this a habit!! JGD!!

JGD..Uprightness is not the Physical position of thee Body, but rather it is attributed to the state of mind in given situation. In Vamana Avathara, when the King of Rashasa Bali, has decided to present Vamana the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, His Guru Sukracharya, tells the King Bali that He need not fulfill the word given to Vamana. He tells the KIng Under some conditions vows given can be broken. But King Bali an Upright person stands by his word and gives all he had to Vamana. Then there is the story of King Harichandra, Sage Viswamithra makes every affort to make Harischandra to take back his word or lie.The King stands by His words and earns the Applauds of all the Devathas. In Ramayana Srirama stands by His word. The most single challenge to Human in these days tell truth and stand by it.As per my experience the most difficult thing is to tell truth and then abide by it.

Our Sadgurudeva is the Rama of our time. He is the epitome of uprightness and dharma. Think of all that Appaji has accomplished. HIS every effort bears excellence of the highest degree. We as his children must try to emulate the truth, purity and righteousness that our precious Sadguru shows us. It is sometimes tempting to go a crooked way for an easy short term gain, yet in the long run we know that standing upright gives strength and long term excellence. As Appaji reminds us that if we protect Dharma, then Dharma protects us. We may fall short for we are only human, but as long as we try sincerely and remember Appaji, he will help. Eventually it gets easier and we fall less often. Jaya guru Datta. Om namo Hanumaye namaha.

    Jaya Guru Datta
Just today it happened to me that i said something which was not truthful. i did not even notice it, because it was a habit to react like this in the actual situation. But i felt very bad from the inside. Sri Swamiji was clearly giving me a hint that i was doing a mistake. Only by analyzing the whole situation with the help of my wife i found out that my reaction was not righteous. We have to be very attentive to find these situations, to analyze their source and to improve our behavior in future. Sri Swamiji guides and helps us in all these small endeavors.

Adhering to rectitude, honesty or righteousness will help us to understand and follow the righteous path. By doing so, one will gradually develop a wonderful nature of righteousness. It is the qualities that makes any object worth it, for example goose berry has fabulous qualities or merits in it, so it is considered as one of the best medicine for vitamin-c. Similarly, any human is recognised by his merits. The nature or proper attitude of a person gives him excellence. Rama, king of Ayodhya, is praised to be a righteous person and because of his righteous behaviour king Rama is offered prayers by few people as he is accepted as God because even a human can transform to divinity by following righteous path in a strict accord. Fantastic message to guide everyone in a righteous path. May lord bless us all to be upright and possess excellence.

  4. Jai Guru Datta, Koti Koti Dhanyawad for showing and guiding us towards the righteous path. With your constant grace we will follow it and reach fulfillment.

Just like the trees stand firm irrespective of pleasant or inclement weather conditions, we need to be firmly rooted in the present our mind focussed on Appaji, irrespective of pleasure or pain. When we really know Appaji is with us, why get carried away with anything.. and how can we be anything but upright,.

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You for this lesson, Puttuji! Reflecting on this message, it is clear that uprightness is a mandatory ingredient in any goal we pursue. There are many short cuts in the material world that seem to instantly yield success – studying for exams but copying from another student during the exam, earning a lot of money through unfair or unethical means, taking credit for someone else’s work, not providing the service promised after getting paid for it and so many more. These short cuts seem to get us to the goal of passing the exams or earning money quickly. But, have we really passed the exam? Do we really understand the subject? Is the money earned rightfully ours? If not, we have no right to it. The only way to learn, grow and shine in the material and the spiritual world is through sincere hard work. There’s no room for unfair or unethical means in the path to true excellence! Obeisance to the Holy Lotus Feet!

Wie bedeutungsvoll ist für mich dieses Zusammenspiel von Lebensgeschichte und heutiger Botschaft! Es war dies das Thema eines der ersten Vorträge von SRI SWAMIJI damals.

    Uprightness creates excellence ~ 12 oct 2012

Namaste Puttuji. Nice video with soothing music blending with the greenery in the video. Uprightness creates excellence is a good quote. One should not run behind fame and victory over others, doing which makes one preoccupied with thoughts how to win and overtake others more than how to do the job correctly. Putting all concentration

    • sridevi on October 26, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Jai Guru Datta! Being upright means to think, speak and act in the right way. This remains me of a saying of the Dalai Lama: ‘It is easy to be good. It is not so easy to be right.” (approximately) This sense of what is right and its practise needs all the noble qualities our Sadguru is suggesting and showing us.

    • Nada on October 26, 2012 at 10:43 pm

    Uprightness creates excellence ~ 12 Oct 2012

Another wonderful message from our Sadguru. Being upright in any circumstance is a test of our steadfastness towards leading a righteous life. Taking the easier route is the way of life, but there are few who take the “right” path no matter how difficult it is, as it will take us to the right goal! Being honest, sincere, and truthful in life may put us in difficult, embarrassing situations. It may also win us a lot of distaste from many people! BUT, the master who is the witness to all our actions, will stand by us and approve of our actions as long as they are upright. When the final judgement day comes, this is what matters. Many of us do incorrect things to please people around us, to make them happy, to win a favor. Is that right?? Definitely not. Though it may temporarily appear favorable to us, in the long run, we have failed the master’s test. Let us all try to please only our master, by being upright in our lives! Lets us elevate ourselves by being honest and upright devotees. There is no fear or guilt when we are truthful and honest. Let us cleanse ourselves and implement this pearl of wisdom in our lives. The beautiful visuals and the music only add emphasis to this message. Jaya Guru Datta.
