  1. Aum – The Pranava Mantra – contains the principles of Creation, Preservation & Destruction. One syllable which when meditated upon, helps appreciate: What goes up comes down, what comes down goes up & nothing remains flat for ever. Equipoise advised

Enabling equipoise, His Holiness comes up with a balanced formula of neither getting deluded by suffering, nor getting excited by good fortune

    Pranams Gurudeva !

Every action is bound by the law of reaction – said MMS173. We now see suffering as a reaction to, as a consequence of.. past sins. Such perspective helps accept suffering, keeps delusion away & avoids accumulating more debits. So too, seeing enjoyment as spending from our store of past merit, helps realize such enjoyment may not last forever, helps feel good about having done good & drives us to do good now, so that we earn credits to spend tomorrow. Thanks a ton for leading us into equipoise. We’re happy to follow you. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji

All what is has a sin, good or bad. All is a reaction of an action, karma. And all, what we suffer helps us at the end, to clear something from the past. Like this never is suffer sinless!

Jaya Guru Datta. We are what we want us to be. In one of the discourses Appaji mentions that we are born because we wanted to. Similarly, whatever we do has a tremendous impact on our well being, conduct and behaviour. We might think that we are suffering due to some maleffects or whatever – but it is in fact a blessing as it melts away our past sins and makes us less accountable for our prior deeds. One of the saints, Kabir Das, mentions that let me experience the bad karma right away – for I might not be in a good position to go through it when it is destined to befall on me. Saints look at this only as a way of reducing the karma and not as a suffering. Thank You Appaji for this great perspective.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, as I was flying to Dallas last night, I was reading a book and a quote stuck out…”nothing is incomplete, with each pain or sorrow that comes, the blessing is already present….” This morning, in your way of two second miracles, you remind me again that enduring pain and suffering has the reward of burning away our past sins–the blessing is already there in the acceptance and endurance. Sri Guru Datta!

Jai Guru Datta! This certainly helps to accept suffering and to be grateful for the burning of sins. It is not so easy to integrate that enjoyment reduces the merit of the past. It gives a completely different perspective to suffering and enjoying. And finally may lead us away from these dualities. No sin any more, no enjoyment any more, but happily in the state of balance of the two. With Sadguru’s grace everything is possible…..

I think the only enjoyment that does not exhaust our store of merit is the enjoyment of following Guru’s commands. This enjoyment is pure bliss. It is not necessarily sensory, although it pleases the senses, like watching each and every SGS MMS video that thrills the eyes, the ear, and the mind, like simply losing oneself in the warm embrace of Appaji’s Healing Music, or the enjoyment of immersing totally in doing the service activity that Sadgurudeva suggests. When such complete absorption is there in following Guru’s instruction, where is the time for suffering? Does one not forget bodily pain when the mind is fully pre-occupied? Does one not forget the mental pain of insult and bereavement while the mind is engaged in a pious activity? Being with Guru and following Guru are one hundred per cent bliss. This bliss transcends all pains and pleasures of the world.. Jaya Guru Datta

JGD. This message 100% true. I’ve experienced this in my own life. After had a challenging life style of 10+ years, with Appaji’s grace got into peaceful life style. When I was in the transition phase from challenged life style to peaceful life style, I had a fear whether this peaceful lifestyle will prolong or not. The nature of life is “suffering/happiness/suffering/happiness” like a sinusoidal wave.

Appaji’s these words are really soothing on how to retain your happy life, which is a merit of your good deeds. Try to be more good when you have a blessed life, which will keep your merit balance always.

I read a message snippet from “Paramahamsa Yogananda” on facebook newsfeed yesterday, which explained the same. If humans are divinity of god, why there is impartiality, some are struggling and some are having happy life. He explained the same, GOD created the humans with equal blessings and gave them the freedom and free will to play on god given blessings. Whoever played it for good, reaps the good things, whoever played it for bad, reaps the sufferings.

My husband and I had the same discussion today morning on our coffee time, and I’m so surprised and happy to see MMS from Appaji on it. ThankYou Appaji! There are no words to express your greatness.

By consciously cultivating this attitude, you will acquire the strength to face all the sufferings and happiness that life offers, with a smile on your face and calmness reigning in heart”.

    Datta Hanuman ki Jai !!

We must always remember that Appaji is watching us. We must realize that our good times are due to deeds we have done in the past keeping our Guru in mind. This will help us do good deeds in present and future. Similarly we should not blame God or Guru in difficult times. We should understand that such deeds only incur more debits. We should accept the situation and be thankful to Our Guru that He is helping us burn our karma and escape the cycle. Realizing the above we should have equanimity of mental state and not get over joyful or sad. Also as said in previous messages we should use our good fortune to help the needy without thinking of reward. This will make Sadgurudeva happy. We are following Sadgurudeva with love and devotion !!

JGD Swamiji thank you for reminding us once again of the Vedantic way of life and of keeping balance in life.It is said that the equipoise of the mind, both in pleasure and in sorrow, entertained by the “wise man” (Dheerah) makes him fit for the highest cultural self-development.

  4. JGD. Oh Appaji, You are truly the greatest Orator. In a few words you have given the urge to welcome suffering as it erases past sins, and to minimize the urge to enjoy temporary fleeting desires as this depletes the past merits. Superb..Om Namo Hanumate Namah.

    • Archana Penukonda on November 21, 2012 at 11:10 pm

Jaya Guru Datta! This is such a wonderful message to develop equipoise. This message is asking us to accept happiness and sorrow with equanimity of mind. Basic math still applies in spirituality. We use up our store of good karma in good times while we clear away accumulated bad karma by suffering for it. I remember a story where a great saint prayed to God to give him only suffering because the saint said, that was when he remembered God the most. Not only does suffering clear away our past sins, it draws us closer to the Almighty as we think of Him more. Why then are we so tangled in the maya that we fear adverse situations and pray to God to help us out of it? Why are we praying to God to always give us happiness and wealth and money when all it does is eat away at our karmic bank balance. Wealth and luxury delude the mind and take us away from our Sathguru. Please bless us Appaji to only desire the dust of Your Lotus Feet! May we accept happiness and adversity as experiences You give us for our own upliftment.

    • Maurice Clarke on November 21, 2012 at 11:54 pm

JGD. May we develop the habits that lead to equipoise, eliminate the habits that cause suffering and foster the habits that lead to merits and ultimately lead to liberation, by Sudguru’s Grace. JGD.

Appaji’s each day’s MMS is a lesson for us and if we follow or take it in the right way, it will be very useful for our day to day life as well as to develop our spiritual path also. Puttuji as usual you have given a nice explanation for to day’s MMS also. Now in this connection I remember Appaji’s words saying that when the God has given you this birth as Humanbeing , symaltaniously He has written your karma also which you have to face in this Janma . Here Appaji has gone further deep in to this and giving His explanation. Basing on that what ever we have done sin in the past, you have to clear by suffering in  this Janma and we should not be misleaded by any force and by some otherway this concept.  At the same time when we follow our Sadguru the impact of the suffering will be reduced. Similarly due to our past merit, we will be enjoying in this Janma  and at the sametime  we should do good things also  by following Appaji’s words and teachings through the spiritual path. If we follow like thatwewill get credit balance which will be useful for future. From these MSG , Appaji is reminding us that we have to follow our Sadguru Who will guide us in the proper way during our good and bad periods.    JGD.

So in this world we live in, created in polarity and duality, Swamiji is reminding us how to practise detachment, viewing our daily experiences from a more healthy and calm perspective. Like the yin yang symbol, within every positive or negative energy there is the seed of the opposite quality. A constant flowing and movement, expanding and contracting. Through our Sadhana guided by Swamiji, we are learning how to stay more centered within this worldly experience.

Guru Datta Jayam. The MMS is a bitter pill to swallow to all who think that the God or Guru, washes away the sins of the present and past, for a unspecified money, left in the Hundi. As commonly done in the Tirumala Venkateswara temple.I often heard prayers by people who come with their wife, children, father and mother, saying” oh.Save me alone”.Such people will be hard stricken if they read that we have to suffer to complete the Karma of the Past.
It is a common belief that GOD or GURU can be bribed. There is the common story that Lord Venkateswara took Loan for Marriage from Lord Kubera(the Custodian of money in the celestial Heavens).Probably this is the First Marriage Loan, and the predecessor to today’s Loans. This H append some where at the ending of Dwapara yuga. The Loan is not paid till to date.Reason? One day it Dawned upon me that The God ask for a loan from Kubera and He is making the Humans to Pay it into His Hundi. Yet the loan amount is not realized. Here we may recollect the story of the SriKrishna Tulla bhara by Satyabhama. All the wealth of the Lady will not be able to tilt the Scale. But a single leaf of TULASI dropped by Queen Rukmini tilts the scales. The weight of bhakthi is enough to satisfy the Lord.Like wise a Penny or Paise dropped in the Hundi with total devotion will not only add to the money of Lord but will also reduce the pain of Karma of the past.
This was a real story of a poor family of agri, cultivators along the border of andhra-karnataka.One day Lord Venkateswara appears in the dream of the Head of the family asks Him to arrange for the making of Sahasra namavali mala made of Gold to Him.The poor man forgets the dream. After sometime again the Lord appears and recounts His wish. The peasant neglects and life continues. On the 3rd occasion the Lord again appears and tells Him quite seriously.Next day remembering the dream,he collects his family and tells them the coming days all of them have to sacrifice to meet the Lord’s wish. All the family members forgo one meal every day and start saving rupee. After many, many years, the Peasant manages to get a Gold ornament with 1000 namavali coins. On the same night the Lord again appears after a gap of more than 20 yrs, and tells the Peasant to go over to Tirumala along with family members and get the ornament adored to the Lord. The man asks the Lord to whom to give the Gold chain.Lord tells HIM THERE WILL BE MAN NAMED Prasad who is the Head and looking the affairs of Lord. The innocent poor family reaches Tirumala and reach the main Entrance where they ask for Mr.Prasad.THe Gentleman waiting there identifies himself as Prasad the E.O. of T.T.D.He ALSO RECOUNTS THAT THE Lord HAS ORDERED HIM TO RECEIVE THE FAMILY AND ADORN the Lord with the chain waiving all formalities. He says further that because of them he had the darshan of Lord.
This is the real offering to GOD by which the Pain of Karma is reduced. And the Happiness does not require the Good of the Past Births.(the story is real and the officer is Sri.P.V.R.K.Prasad,I.A.S.(rtd).who
    wrote in his memories.
this the type of offering the Lord desires from a devotee to reduce the pain or make him to endure the suffering.

When we suffer we are clearing our past sins like withdrawing money from bank and the account balance lowers but are we able to stop ourselves from doing new deeds so that we are not into this chain of doing and suffering???? I doubt, if we can be out of this cycle of action and reaction like Sri Swamiji’s MMS 173 “Each action is bound by the law of reaction” how can one be out of this chain reaction!!! May be only God can help us from this, let Him take a form to help us out of this cycle. May Lord bless us all to give strength to tolerate the intensity of the results of our deeds and give us the knowledge so that we can avoid from doing new deeds.

    Jaya Guru Datta Puttuji,

This reminds me of my childhood… i always pray to god why all suffering have to come to me and my family, but after coming to Sri Swamiji i got the strenght to face this life boldly.Where there is light there is darkness, where there is heat there is cold… similarly where there is pleasure there is pain. Through easy sayings, simple MMS Sri Swamiji is teaching us how to live and behave in this world and be a better person.

When unexpected joy comes that I had not wished for or worked for, it is definitely a blessing from Guru. But when I yearn for pleasure and earn it with deliberate effort, I am using up my saved merit. When unexpected misery comes my way, I am paying back my old debts, which is good. I do not need to wish for it or invite it. When my payment is due, the creditors will come chasing after me, no doubt. My past mistakes will not leave me until I have paid my recompense. But the grace of Guru is so great that soaring debts, losing the affection of family and friends, losing all worldly possessions appeared as boons that set me free. They did not seem like miseries. Once that freedom is relished, when by Guru’s grace again all the lost worldly assets of relationships and possessions come back unsolicited, they do not seem like burdens anymore. They are merely a part of the neutral scenery. Such is the grace of Guru. What divine blessing it is! Jaya Guru Datta

When you suffer, you clear away past sins ~ 21 Nov 2012

We all come with our baggage of sins and merits. We all want to live a happy comfortable joyful life and usually wish to escape difficulties. When we do this, we are running out of our merit account. We seem to enjoy our current life but forget that our share karma for past sins are yet to be experienced. Sri Swamiji always says, experience suffering, difficulties and pain early on and get rid of our sins. It will make us strong and increase our faith in God and we will live a meritorious life going forward. But all of us look for enjoyment and forget this basic fact. Sri Swamiji;s Bhajan – ‘Barali Barali kashtavella barali’ says ‘Let all kinds of difficulties come, I only seek the grace of Lord Datta’. That should be our confidence in the Lord. We will then be able to face any difficulty in life. Let us all pray to Sadguru for strength to clear away all our past sins and live a life where we build our merits. Jaya Guru Datta

what a strong message! i watched the mms the evening that day after work with a headache that felt exactly like the beautiful visualization around the golden OM, very painful. although I do know it at last, hearing it so immediately from sri swamiji, makes any suffering much easier, even joyful in the attitude. it is such a liberating task to clear away past sins, and our beloved sadguru offers us a whole spectrum of opportunities to do so. to my surprise the headache, often lasting for much longer time, was completely gone a few hours later.

This statement is the treasure chest of maintaining inner peace. Knowing that everything that shows up in this life is a result of my actions. It gives the opportunity to show restraint in all things enjoyable and realize that the pain and suffering is not bad, but helping me. Thank you Sri Swamiji.

With Your grace the sufferings (health, loss of dear ones etc) never felt like a suffering. You were always there holding us. If those are called sufferings in the worldly sense, I would like much more of those. Only You can make any suffering enjoyable.
Praying for a stable mind that can understand everything is Your gift.
