Why are satsang and nāma sankeertana important?

The sense organs are always attracted towards experiences of the outer materialistic world. They are always out to destroy our mind. The mind therefore needs protection. This can be achieved through constant association with Sadguru (satsang) and through nāma sankeertana (chanting divine names).

We need to acquire the permanent or indestructible wealth. Materialistic earnings are not permanent. If a person earns 1 crore rupees in lottery, it ultimately leads him towards sorrows. There will be no happiness at the end. In other words, the influence of that money attracts sorrows. All this is illusion (maya). Every being should try to make attempts to find that which is permanent. The sense organs which are temporary and impermanent attract and run only after those experiences that are impermanent!

The ordinary person who is deeply entangled in this web called worldly bondages can use Nāma sankeertana (chanting divine names) and sadhu sāngatya (association of pious saints) as the 2 wings to soar high. He can transform into a supreme saint (Paramahamsa)! He can even reach a stage wherein he is untouched by any past bad tendencies. Purity of the mind is the fundamental requirement for this. To purify the mind, Guru seva is essential.

There is no need to specifically seek Guru’s blessings. Does anyone have to pray to the Sun to bless him with his light? Can the Sun show a preference towards any particular place? To the Sun, everyone and everyplace is one and the same. Similarly in Guru’s eyes all are equal. But based on the devotees or disciple’s purity and based on the attitude that he reflects towards Guru seva, Guru’s blessings will fall on him.

The disciple’s attitude should be such that ‘whether it is talking or it is arguing, it is only with the Guru’. Even if you have a problem with sandal paste it will still spread its fragrance around you, won’t it? It is unhealthy to argue with people over materialistic transactions. Transactions or dealings with ordinary people cannot benefit you. Learn to increase your association with your Sadguru.

Satsang or association with great people has the capacity to bring about a change in even the most cruel people. Nama japa (reciting the name of God) or Divya nama sankeertan (bhajan) is a very useful tool towards this. Sadguru is that person who can bring this massive transformation in you. A father can only give you a good birth, but within this birth Sadguru can give you rebirth.

How to get rid of bad habits? Why is satsang important?

Through holy friendships (satsang) and bhajans it is possible to get rid of bad habits and negative tendencies! Your aim should be to achieve permanent liberation.

Bhajans as well as hymns such as Vishnu and Lalita Sahasranama energize the nādis (subtle energy channels) tremendously. Uninterrupted Nama smarana (bhajans) can grant liberation! When the name of the Lord is chanted even once with complete love, faith and concentration unimaginably supreme results are obtained.  On the other hand chanting the Lord’s names a million times without concentration is a sheer waste. A tape recorder plays His names zillions of times. In what way does it benefit? The omnipresent God knows everything. Learn to be calm. Be peaceful. Atleast for 5-10 minutes a day learn to be calm and to pray silently.

It is very important to have virtuous and worthy friends. Good associations (sat sangatya) have the ability to wash away bad habits and make way for good thoughts! The subtle impressions of our past actions (vāsanas) are not in our control. To overcome desires, rigorous effort is required. Our past tendencies, the desires we entertain and the good friendships we maintain together build our character. Taking the help of good associations that is within our reach, we should first of all make attempts to overcome desires. Then, with the help of our Guru, we can overcome and destroy the bad tendencies that arise from the subtle impressions of past actions.

If you want satsang, just a little effort is enough to get it. This present birth is a great opportunity to complete or bring to an end all the karmas done in the previous births. Karma is a must. It needs to be done. A thorn can be removed only with the aid of another thorn. In the same way, karma can be set off only by karma. Good karma should be done. Sri Krishna Paramatma has declared that through karma yoga it is possible to get liberation.

Why is Hanuman said to be son of Shiva and Kesari? Why does He have the radiance of all celestials?

Remember that these are divine births wherein the baby is not delivered through the womb. Only through eye gaze conception takes place and the lady instantly delivers the child.

Divine incident pertaining to Hanuman’s birth:

In many Puranic stories Hanuman is referred to as Shiva’s son. The radiance of all celestials came in the form of Shiva’s radiance from which Hanuman was born!

In order to destroy Ravana, who was arrogantly torturing the worlds on the strength of the boons he had obtained from Lord Brahma, all the Devatas approached Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma took them along with him to Vaikunṭha wherein they collectively prayed to Lord Maha-vishnu. Hearing their prayers Maha-vishnu said, “I am now going to take away the radiance from all of you who have assembled here.”

He converted this collective radiance into a ball and asked Shiva to swallow it. Maha-vishnu further indicated that He would be born as the son of King Dasharatha. He also promised that from Shiva’s radiance a powerful Vanara would be born who would help him in his mission. Hence He asked all the Devatas to take up positions in the Vanara clan at the earliest as He would, with the help of all Vanaras, kill demon Ravana.

A little while after Shiva gulped this radiance He was engaged in a divine cosmic dance ritual known as tandava with Mother Goddess Parvati. However Mother Goddess was unable to withstand his radiance so much so that she shuddered to even see him, who was burning like fire. Finding however found this to be a suitable moment and he transferred this unbearable radiance to her!

The radiance was so powerful that Parvati could not carry it. Hence in turn she transferred it to Fire-god Agni, who withstood it for some time. However he too was weighed down by its heat. Understand that the Fire-god felt this heat unbearable! What would have been the potency of this radiance that was unbearable to fire itself? Can you imagine that such radiance ever existed?

When the Fire-god began to search for someone to whom he could transfer it, he saw the Wind-god and instantly transferred it to him. Wind-god gaped at this radiance in shock, “I never associate with any smell I carry. Why has this radiance attached to me, who otherwise remain unattached?”

No matter how hard he tried Wing-god could not withstand this intolerable radiance. So he began to look out for a suitable candidate to whom he could transfer this radiance. He spotted Anjana, wife of Kesari, immersed in deep penance on the banks of Akash-ganga teertha near the Venkatachalam Mountains (near Tirumala) seeking progeny.

Realizing that this lady, who was immersed in penance for many trillions of years, had the capacity to withstand this radiance, he dropped it into her hands and asked her to consume it. Meditating upon Shiva, she gulped it down. With this she was pregnant. On Vaishaka shuddha daśami, during Vaidṛti yogam, Karkataka lagna Hanuman was born to her.

Although Hanuman has the radiance of all the 33 crore Devatas, He primarily holds the radiance of Lord Shiva. He is an incarnation of Shiva. He is the embodiment of all Devatas. Hence He is Shankara Suvana kesari nanda.

This incident of Hanuman’s birth is one among the 100 incarnations of Lord Shiva. Nandīśwara narrated this incident to Maharishi Sanat-kumara.

Another divine incident pertaining to Hanuman’s birth:

Lord Shiva was captivated by Vishnu’s beauty when the latter incarnated as Mohini. This enchanting captivating beauty of Vishnu’s female form spares none in the creation! It is a beauty which is beyond imagination. Even the best artist fails to paint Mohini image. When Vishnu’s male form itself is wonderous and captivating, what more needs to be said about His female form as Mohini?

Shiva who was fascinated by Mohini neared her with the intent of speaking to her. At the same time realization dawned upon Him. He controlled his emotions. He was perturbed that his mind had wavered. He pondered over it. He then remembered that the stage was being set for Rama’s incarnation and of his role in it. ‘Anjana is performing intense austerities seeking my blessings. Therefore this wavering is also for universal well-being.  Such deep significance is hidden behind this wavering of mine!’- thinking thus He smiled.

Immediately He pulled out from within Him, the radiance (tejas) that was generated due to his fascination for Mohini. He carried it a little distance and then left it upon a leaf within a deep forest. The seven great sages observed Shiva who left His radiance in the forest.

Always remember that the 5 elements are eternally watching your deeds. Be cautious. You need not fear anyone. But you have the fear the 5 gross elements; you have to fear dharma. They remain eternal witnesses. We can never escape their clutches.

The seven great sages instantly collected this radiance and poured it into Anjana devi’s hands. In fact, Wind-god dropping the radiance and the seven great sages pouring it into her hands happened simultaneously! Anjana devi, the supreme yogini, gulped this infinite combined radiance and retained it in her womb for some time. Thereafter She gave birth to Lord Shiva, who had incarnated as a powerful Vanara with the name Hanuman!

This story of Hanuman’s birth which is contained in Shiva-purāṇā is very pious. It blesses the person with longevity and fame. It fulfills desires. By listening to it or by narrating it to others all desires are fulfilled. Moreover the person is blessed with liberation.

Incident from Vayu-purāṇa:

Vāyu-purāna also explains that Supreme Lord Shiva was born from Anjana devi’s womb as Hanuman. At one point Mother Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva, “Why do you endlessly chant Rama-mantra? Why did you promise to incarnate when Vishnu incarnates as Rama? Why do you seek to serve Rama?” Lord Shiva replied, “The incarnation as Rama is the foundation for the establishment of righteousness (dharma)”.

“But my Lord” continued Parvati, “I know this incarnation is solely for destruction of Ravana. Previously Ravana had chopped his 10 heads and had offered them to you. Why do you seek to destroy your ardent devotee? In order to help Rama you are being hard on your devotee. Are your actions acceptable?”

“Undoubtedly what you say is true my dear” said Lord Shiva. “I can confidently state that a devotee equal to Ravana can never be found. Devotion however should remain as devotion alone! When arrogance enters devotion it leads to downfall. Even a trace of arrogance should never enter into the devotee”

‘I completed the task. I alone am responsible for it. Without me this task would remain incomplete’- such talk is the sign of arrogance.

“Although Ravana worshipped me diligently he poked fun at one aspect of me. He ridiculed me. Offering his 10 heads he worshipped my 10 aspects. However he rejected my 11th aspect (ekadasha Rudra-roopa), which is the most important aspect. Therefore I shall take birth from Anjana devi’s womb with my 11th aspect. It is Rudra-aspect. I will then assist Rama in killing Ravana. I will be known as Hanuman”. Hearing this reply Mother Goddess Parvati was pleased.

Incident which took place before the killing of demon Gardhabhasura:

In the context of killing demon Gardhabhasura Shiva said, “O Lord Vishnu, I cannot kill my devotee Gardhabhasura. However his atrocities are increasing by the day. Therefore please kill him. If you are able to kill him I will be your servant and will serve you.”

After demon Gardhabhasura was killed Shiva approached Vishnu and asked, “O Keshava, permit me to become your servant and fulfill my promise.” Vishnu replied, “This is not the appropriate moment. When I incarnate as Rama You incarnate as Hanuman and help me establish righteousness.” As a result of this discussion Shiva incarnated as Hanuman.

How did Shiva become a pāṣāṇa or linga?

Let us recount from different Puranas:

Once, while walking through the Daruka vana, Shiva brought trouble for all the saints who were involved in intense austerities in that forest. Shiva is far more handsome than Vishnu. For this reason He is called Sudaresha. Vishnu is not addressed as Sundaresha but as Mohanānga. It is said that Parvati is dark complexioned. None of the 33 crore Devatas can match Shiva in beauty.

The greatest saints who were meditating in Dāruka vana were fascinated by His beauty. We are talking of those saints who were of the highest calibre! They had undertaken penance for many many yugas and were masters in all forms of knowledge! Such was their penance that their matted locks touched the ground. They had totally abstained from food for long periods of time. Penance which is done without harming the body and without harming others is true penance.

Such saints were captivated by His beauty! Krishna’s beauty only attracted woman. But Shiva’s beauty captivated not only women but also men! For a little time these men believed that they had transformed into women and getting up from their seats they began to follow Shiva!

The wives of these saints were responsible for maintaining the holy fire within the house. It was their duty to ensure that fire eternally burned in the house without dying down. When these dutiful chaste wives saw their husbands leaving them and going along with Shiva, they cried loudly in grief.

“Hey Shiva, You may be handsome, no doubt, but You can never create such feelings of love in us as we are extremely chaste woman. Let go off our husbands for without them we cannot survive. We have given up our parental homes and are here only to dutifully serve our husbands. We have been serving our husbands devotedly for the past thousands of years. To us husband is God”.

In Krishna’s sports, the mothers of the Gopikas go and beg him to set the girls free. It sounds morally correct. But here Shiva was unaware that thousands of saints were following Him as he moved about in the forest!

As these saints walked, the many demons on the path were dying unable to withstand the intensity of their penance!

Shiva, the ever-compassionate Supreme Lord, observed the demons dying and was unhappy. He pondered over the reason. He concluded that the intensity of the penance of the saints who were following Him led to the death of these demons who were predominantly of tamasic traits. ‘Oh, a terrible calamity is about to take place. The wives of these saints are bound to curse me now’.

Even as He was thinking, Arundhati and other chaste women, who were the wives of the saints, cursed Shiva. They cursed that He should turn into a pāśāṇa or linga. With this curse He transformed into a linga. All the saints then bathed the Lord with abhishekam and decorated Him beautifully. Even to this day saints perform these rituals, and while chanting the Rudra, Namaka and Camaka, continue to call Him.

Then the saints addressed their wives and said, “Due to your curse our dear God has transformed into a linga. Please go away. Please do not come near us. We want to remain here with Him.”The wives replied, “We will stay along with you here and worship Him”.

Another story:

Once, an argument ensued between Brahma and Vishnu which turned into a great dispute. With an intention of bringing about a settlement between them, Shiva entered into the scene. Absorbing both of them into Him, he took on the form of a huge, endless pillar of fire.

To figure out the origin of this pillar of fire, Lord Brahma in the form of a swan flew into space. With the same intent, Lord Vishnu in the form of varaha (wild boar) went deep into Patala (hell). No matter how far they travelled in space, neither the beginning nor the end of this pillar could be traced. No matter how much they searched, Lord Shiva could not be seen. It was then that they realized the greatness and infinity of Shiva.

At that point the ever-compassionate Lord Shiva, took on the form of a small Jyotirlinga (pillar of light, a small linga) and appeared before them. Only that idol (moorti) which manifests during Ardra nakshatra (star Betelgeuse) is considered as the Lingodbhava moorti. This is how the Lord Shiva has been referred to as the pillar of fire.

What is non-violence (ahimsa)?

One of the very important disciplines to be practiced by a spiritual aspirant is Ahimsa or non-violence. It is to be practised at all 3 levels: verbal, physical and mental.

Verbal non-violence: The aspirant should not utter lies either for his own benefit, for the benefit of others, for the purposes of profession, for protecting righteousness (dharma) or for his freedom. Only those who possess pure minds, who speak lovingly to others and who do not entertain feelings of anger reach heaven. Abusing others is prohibited! This is called vācika ahimsa dharma.

Mental non-violence: Mind should be freed from impurities. He should be content with what he possesses. Never be jealous when others prosper. Learn to enjoy their prosperity and share their happiness. This is Yogam. It is your luck to be bestowed with that yogam. A teacher should never be envious when his student prospers and becomes more famous than him!

He should be compassionate towards all forms of life and should not have feelings of enmity towards any living entity. More importantly, he should not seek any result from any good or bad deed performed. Only such persons are eligible to reach heaven! This is mānasika ahimsa dharma.

Physical non-violence: this is called kāyaka ahimsa dharma. He should strictly abstain from sinful activities and should not physically harm other living beings. The longevity of the person who abuses others gets shortened. Even after undergoing unimaginable punishments in hell when such sinner is reborn on earth his life will serve no purpose. This is because he will have a very short lifespan. Very short lifespan indicates that he has harmed other living entities in his past life.

Only that person, who while performing auspicious deeds, strictly abstains from using weapons, speaks lovingly to others and practices non-violence reaches heaven.
