Why should we worship God?

Why do we drink water while eating food? We do this so that the solid, nutritious food taken in by us gets digested and absorbed properly and in turn we derive good health, peace and comfort.

Similarly, why do we perform Puja? We worship God for our own contentment. The intention behind this is to acquire good mental health devoid of impurities and thereby to lead a broad-minded, contented and peaceful life.

Some people casually listen to the radio to get mental peace. There are others who, for the same reason, simply walk up and down aimlessly. There are also people who, not knowing what to do, simply pick up a quarrel with their neighbours or family members. There are yet a few who use their idle time to recollect all the past events of their life thus causing great harm, both to themselves as well as to their mind.  They sit gloomily. This is their fate. Recollecting events that happened decades ago and by constantly thinking about it, they are only harming themselves. With this routine, eventually the body as well as the mind gets diseased.

Your question was about the purpose behind the performance of pujas, abhishekas and homas. The various mental illnesses that arise out of an idle mind, like the one mentioned above, that cannot be subdued through any form of medication and treatment can be healed completely through worship. Due to worship the person enjoys mental peace.

What is meant by Self-realization (atma jnana)? How can we get Self-realization?

Self-realization means understanding about your true inner Self. It also means understanding clearly all about oneself from every aspect.

To know about the Self completely it is very important to get involved in Guru seva. One should be able to serve the Guru with absolute love and dedication. In such cases, if Sadguru so desires, then He can grant Self-knowledge. It is His wish and will.

Why has vegetarianism been prescribed by our sacred texts?

Similar to humans, all animals tend to have desires. When the trap called death is lurking around, even animals like humans try their best to escape from its claws. However fruits and vegetables desire that they should be consumed by humans. Vegetarian food purifies the mind. In addition, it also increases the capacity to contemplate. If one is truly repentant about having eaten meat earlier and wants to become a vegetarian, the ever compassionate Lord will forgive that person.

The negative effects of eating non-vegetarian food are to be experienced in the later births. Mind begins to shrink instead of growing. In those extreme absolute unavoidable situations wherein there is no option but to ear meat for survival, it is acceptable to a degree. But thereafter the moment grains or vegetables are available; meat should totally be given up.

Does Swamiji disapprove non-vegetarian food?

Killing animals for food is violence (himsa). It is both egoistic and demonic. In certain unavoidable situations, consuming meat is not a sin. But under normal circumstances, why should another being be killed for food? In extremely cold countries, a little quantity of alcohol may be used medicinally, but it does not mean that unlimited consumption of alcohol is approved.

Does food influence the behaviour of the person?

Yes, the behaviour of the person is dependent upon the kind of food he/she consumes. Swamiji disapproves of non-vegetarian food. Non-vegetarian food prevents the entry of good vibrations into the person.

When all the nutrition necessary for the survival of a human being is found in vegetarian food, why should a person seek non-vegetarian food? As the non-vegetarian food contains far more valuable nutrition than that which is required for human survival, it increases the inertia (tamasic qualities) in the person. Thus it turns out to be detrimental to the person. Another important truth is that this universe gives every living being a right to live on this Earth. What then gives humans a right to kill another animal for their food?
