July 27th : Righteousness is truth

This message is like the small pepper pod that packs a lot of energy, set amidst a prayerful combination of classic tamil poetry and amazing visuals.

Righteousness is about being honest, being fact based, being correct and justifiable. Righteousness is to live life the way Lord Rama did it.. in ways that are consistent to one’s principles.. one’s dharma. Principles of dharma are changeless eternal truths.. like the compass that always points true north, they never change with the changing weather or the changing times. So, this message says in tamil – ‘Dharma is Sathya’.. meaning.. Righteousness is Truth.

The towers of the Meenakshi temple in Madurai ( in Tamilnadu, South India ) stand tall in all grandeur. Against the backdrop of the sky, they look majestic. People who stand up for righteousness stand as upright and as tall as these temple towers. Centuries may pass, but their grandeur will remain unmatched. Perfectly matching visuals.

Is it easy to practice righteousness ? Was it a easy life for Lord Rama ? Or for Jesus Christ ? Or for Mahatma Gandhi ? But then did they not live that difficult life of righteousness, with a smile on their face, standing tall with grace and grandeur ? Did they not find the energy to live that higher life, from their higher inner sense of purpose ? Hence comes the prayer to Goddess Meenakshi wherein our beloved Appaji sings : {“Meenaana vizhigalile paarthu paarthu, menaana vaazhvuthanai inimaiaakku”} meaning {“Keep watching me with your fish shaped eyes, and make it pleasant for me to live the higher life”}.

Try doing this : Replay the video, and sing with Appaji, the words in parenthesis { } in tamil or in english. Reflect on those words as you watch the grandeur of the Goddess, the temple and its towers.. and feel an upsurge of energy in your inner self to live a life of righteousness.

Listen to the whole bhajan ‘Madurai Madurai Meenakshi’ – on – http://www.flipkart.com/namarchanai/p/itmdb5gsyxdhqbuz?pid=DGADB5FUMVY7DKFU&ref=60426667-03ea-42df-9d1b-d446b98d5e08 . Enjoy the blissful experience, and live the higher life!

Our delighted pranams at the lotus feet of His Holiness for having blessed us with such a awesome MMS experience ! Jaya Guru Datta ! – Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Appaji! I noticed Garuda at the end of this video. I have been thinking about Garuda and his story as one of the faces of Panchamukha Hanuman, and was wondering why Swamiji was showing his image at the end of this video. I searched Garuda and Righteousness and found the beautiful teachings of the Garuda Purana on righteousness and where the righteous go in Chapter 14 where Garuda says “The righteous go by righteous ways to the mansion of Justice….” Jaya Guru Datta for these little things that you include that can lead us to deeper lessons….

Thanks Appaji… and all the Puttugam team, who are doing a wonderful job each day. Taking time out for just for us. Because, each mms is not just a video, every second and every frame has a teaching in it. And all those little things mean a lot!! Jaya Guru Datta

Jaya Guru Hanuman, Mother Meenakshi takes care of all her children just like a fish nourishes her children through the looks. This video reminded me of a phrase from Datta Stavam – ‘Brahmanyam dharma tattvagyam’. Sri Swamiji expounds on this verse saying that the highest form of Dharma or Righteouness is Brahman or truth. Let us all try to understand the path of righteouness, thread on it and experience the truth. The simplest way to this is:

    Follow the master
    Faith in God
    Face the devil (karma)
    Finish the game

Humble prostrations to lotus feet of Sri Swamiji.

    Om namo hanumate namaha

  2. Puttuji, I don’t know whether the video is nicer and more inspiring or your message! Your explanation of the message conveyed by the video is excellent and highly motivating. Thank you. Jaya Guru Datta

In Kaliyuga it is said that all good things are tough to practice. Even if it is tough, we should cultivate to be on the path of righteousness. Difficulties might come temporarily but as long as we are on right path, God will always help us through the difficulties.

I liked the conclusion part of the video very much where we’ve Lord Shiva, Meenakshi Mata and Sadguru Deva, Which reminds me of ‘Maatha cha Parvathi Devi Pitha Devo Maheshwara’ and our Sadguru, who is both our mother and father.

    • Hema on July 27, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Under Sadguru’s influence many untruths in my life have come to light. Some were of my own doing and some were deceptions of those close to me. It was a very painful experience to purge untruth and unrighteousness from my life. With tears in my eyes I asked Sadguru for strength and he did not fail me. With limitless compassion and love he guided me and I have emerged cleaner and more righteous than before. I now see that I would not have been able to progress spiritually without the truth being revealed. Sadguru knows everything that is inside of us and he works to rid us of untruth and unrighteousness. Thanks to my beloved Swamiji I can now walk in truth and righteousness. Om namo Hanumate namah.

Very nice video with powerful Bhajan.
Video took me Madurai Meenakshi temple tour which I have visited 20 years back.
This refreshed my memories and experiences at Madurai. Many questions rise when you see great temple towers and make us feel proud of our culture and engineering in those days without any modern equipment.
Dharma as the universal principle of law sprang first from Brahman(brahman is the one supreme, universal Spirit that is the origin and support of the phenomenal universe). It acts as the regulatory moral principle of the Universe. We can’t change the Dharma as it is the universal truth.
With the blessings of our poojya sadguru we will follow Dhrama and live a life of righteousness.

    Jaya Guru Datta!
i decided some time ago not to tell lies any more. This gives me a much more “upright” feeling, a more truthful connection e.g. to friends. Truthful can in my perception also mean not to tell something in order not to hurt or in case i am bound by discretion. There are topics where i have to improve. Sometimes i tell something without thorough reflection if it is really true. This is wrong. i should thoroughly think before speaking (compare MMS 25). i also speak sometimes to please somebody. i should say it only if it is the truth.
Deep thanks to Sri Swamiji who makes this and every development possible.
Thank you, dear Puttuji, for your great comments to the MMSs and for this wonderful MMS.
    Sri Guru Datta
    Om Namo Hanumate Namah
    Om Sri Jayalaksmi Matre Namah

  4. My dear dear Puttuji, what a wonderful commentary. The nandana team deserves a medal for the visuals. Appaji this mms is short but packs such a huge message, it has motivated me to try to emulate all that is good. I thank you again and again. I can never hope to repay the excellent lessons you are imparting. Jaya Mataji Jaya Gurudeva Jaya Veera Hanuman.

“A dharmic path is the only path that leads to permanent happiness”
“If we protect Dharma, Dharma will protect us” and
    “Righteousness (Dharma) is Truth”

A progressive elevation in my thought process!!

Looking at the majestic gopuram against the blue skies elevates us to a different level, energizes the soul. If we stand by our ethics, integrity and the values that we have been taught, following Dharmic path is a cake walk. In spite of the people and the circumstances, if we are persistent with our ethics, integrity and values, we automatically become worthy of respect. We automatically stand tall amongst equals. It is a feeling of being elevated to higher realms. At the same time, we need to be careful that all our worthiness remains at manageable levels and not go into heads making us complacent.

Meenakshi ammal, bless us with the poise and mental strength so that we always stick to truth and integrity so that we discover the absolute truth.
Once we discover that absolute truth, we are sure to find happiness that makes us healthy in our minds. We are then protecting Dharma and being protected by Dharma!

Image of Appaji in the form of Madhurai Meenakshi, the color green, the bhajan (though I cant recollect the lyrics at the moment), the majestic temple towers standing tall, all are magnificent. Instigates the soul to uphold righteousness!!

Thank you Appaji for another profound message. JGD! I recollect that one of the messages of Puttuji’s wallpost earlier in the week was about speaking the truth, asking for forgiveness and being ready to face punishment. So in sync with this message. Appaji and Puttuji sure have their special and unique ways to touch our hearts and stir up our souls. Ever grateful to both!!

Meenakshi Swaroopa Sadguru Maharajki Jai !!! jaya guru datta..

    • Anand. T (Hyderabad) on July 27, 2012 at 7:16 pm

    Jaya Guru Datta!

With “Sri Poojya Swamiji’s” Divine Blessings and permission, we can analyze as below:

    RIGHTEOUSNESS IS TRUTH:

The life is divided in to four stages on Earth. They are:
    1. The celibate student.
    2. A married person who thus is not celibate.
    3. Retirement and contemplation.
    4. The monastic life or a solitary life.

Among human beings there are three stages of Bhavas or Gunas:

    1. The “Pashu-bhava”- Tamasik: Is the lowest group of people who live solely for themselves and for their own selfish pleasures. They think ill and do ill to others. They have no interest except in their own social or financial advantage, and they never help others in any way at all. They are the people on the lowest step of evolution.

    2. The “Vira-bhava”- Rajasik: Is the middle group. They have ambition and desire to progress upwards. They are strong, and frequently have quite a lot of energy. Unfortunately, they are selfish and domineering when they think someone might be getting more than they. They are the types who want to be ‘Do-gooders,’ not for the sake of helping others, but so that they shall be known as great.

    3. This group, the “Divya-bhava”- Sattvik: Is of a much better type, with harmonizing people who are thoughtful, unselfish, and really interested in helping others unselfishly. They will go to great effort to help those who seek help, and they do not do it for self-gain.

It is Life’s code of living, a manner of passing our time upon this Earth, so that we shall hurt none and advance our own spiritual progress in the quickest time with the least effort. Here are various things which one must do, and various things which one must not do. The Eightfold Path, which means:

    1. Correct views. 2. Correct Aspirations. 3. Correct Speech. 4. Correct Conduct. 5. Correct Methods of livelihood. 6. Correct Effort. 7. Correct Thoughts. 8. Correct Contemplation.

When we can do all that correctly, we will find that life will be very hard for us, because it will mean that we are on our last incarnation, and during one’s last incarnation there is always suffering and loss because at such time one is clearing up the odds and ends necessary before one can move on with a clear conscience and with no karma outstanding.

The Four parts of human life are that each part shall develop and come to full growth:

The First part is that of morality and purity of thought. This makes one a decent person who is able to progress on the Spiritual Path.

The Second part, there is security of position, so that the Temple of the Soul, which, naturally, is the body, is not damaged by excessive poverty or suffering. It should be stated that in some conditions one has to have poverty and suffering because of Karma, but as a general rule it is better that one is able to attain to the Middle way not too rich, not too poor, not starving, but not overfed.

The Third part is that by which one has one’s desires fulfilled. It comes as a reward for right living, right thinking, and right behaving. A desire does not include the desire of materialistic things, having a new car or a new coat, or things which are for vanity or to show. A desire is a desire to help others and to save others from unnecessary distress.

The Fourth, and best, of the parts is that one shall speedily attain to release from the ties of this world. It means liberation from Karma, the end of one’s incarnations and reincarnations upon the Earth.

There are 3 Grandhis or ‘knots,’ the Muladhra, the Anahatha, and the Ajna knot:
In time everyone has to raise the Kundalini in order to progress spiritually and metaphysically.
Raising the Kundalini means that one has to break through these knots, it means that one has to break free from physical lusts, free from physical desires and spites.

When one has gone through the first of the knots, then one has to break through the ordinary higher mental desires; one has to do away with mental snobbery, for instance. Even some of the higher mental thoughts are concerned with selfishness, and before one can progress one has to truly remember that all men are equal in the sight of God.

The third knot on the Spiritual plane is breaking through to one’s own real self, the Atma, and then one is far beyond the confines of the physical body. When one breaks the third knot one does not need to come to this Earth, except specifically to help others.

A person who is studying with an advanced “Guru”, with the aim of securing liberation from the lusts and desires of the flesh, will be taught in the main six things, which are:

    1. Shama: This is the ability to remain tranquil and to direct one’s thoughts, to control the mind so that the lusts of the body are set aside.
    2. Dama: This is a system of disciplines which enables one to control the body after the mind has been raised to a state when body desires can be exorcised.
    3. Uparati: This system teaches one not to desire the possessions of one’s neighbor. It teaches one to become circumspect in choosing one’s associates and one’s possessions; it teaches one to be content with what one has.
    4. Titiksha: This is the ability to endure cheerfully and patiently the difficulties which are thrust upon us by our evolving Karma.
    5. Shraddha: Under this system one has to be sincere and honest with oneself and with others. One must tear away the illusions and the falsity which surround one.
    6. Samadhana: Here one is able to concentrate one’s forces; one’s abilities, to a single purpose. One is not turned aside by temporary distractions. Instead, one pursues a steadfast path straight ahead to secure freedom from reincarnating.

The Observances exhorts one to associate with those of better abilities, and stronger spiritual patterns than one’s own. The more one associates with one’s ‘betters,’ the more opportunity there is of some of the ‘goodness’ rubbing off on to us. That we should constantly strive to associate with those who can set us an example, and lead us along the path of purity and spiritual development.

For giving this opportunity to us, thank YOU “Datta Guru”! Thank YOU “Puttuji”!

    Sri Guru Datta!

Jaya Guru Dutta, wonderful video and bhajan, wonderful MMS from our Sadguru. I think it is hard for one to uphold righteousness without the inner guidance of Sadguru. First, I need to now what righteousness is and how in my life in this Kaliyuga righteousness is practised. Focusing my mind continuously on Sri Swamiji, my mind gets purer and purer and Sri Swamiji’s voice from inside is getting louder and clearer. This way I know I am walking the path of righteousness. Like Puttuji so kindly explained, Rama and Sri Swamiji demonstrate the real path of Dharma for us. I can relate to hundreds of stories of Sri Swamiji’s life that are perfect examples of how Sri Swamiji identified righteous and walked them. Thank you for the most inspiring message dear Swamiji. Koti Pranaams, and prayers to make me uphold righteousness in my life. Sreevidya NZ

    • Niveditha Samudrala on July 27, 2012 at 10:10 pm

This is a very thought provoking video. Thank you.

Several questions arise when one delves into understanding the logic behind what is considered as ‘righteous’ and what isn’t. Some principles are blindly passed on by elders (probably they were simple agreements among people that evolved with time in order to foster a civil community), some principles develop from (negative) experiences and some principles are guided by conscience. In any event, I think it is important to acknowledge these principles, see the fundamental motif beneath them and be convinced. Once convinced, it becomes binding on the person to maintain integrity between such ideologies, actions and thoughts at all times.

So happy to hear this song with the visuals from Madurai temple of Mother Goddess. When I visited there in 2002, I was struck by the grandeur and profoundly pure energy radiating from Her.
In the West, “Righteousness” has taken on an egotistic meaning that many do not aspire to. But what I have found through listening and singing Sri Swamiji’s bhajans is the True meaning of the word and the strength that comes through the practice of Truth. There is no going back. I thank Sri Swamiji for bringing meaning to this life. Sri Guru Datta

Prayers to Sadguru, that we may have the mind to know what is right & courage to walk in that path.
We are blessed to have Sadguru, to whom we can offer all our actions in prayer. This thought will itself make us, His children, conscious of what is right.
