    Jaya Guru Datta. Discourse summary:

    Sri Maha Ganapate Namah
    Sri Sarasvatyai Namah
    Sri Padavallabha Narasimha Sarasvati
    Sri Guru Dattatreyaya Namah.

    Namo namah survara pujitanghraye
    Namo namah nirupama mangalatmane
    Namo namo vipula padaika siddhaye
    Namo namah karikala pananayate

When the Ganapathy festival arrives, there’s an unknown happiness in everyone – right from children to the aged. Ganapathy represents the form that combines man and elephant. There’s a big pot belly that’s almost hanging, a long crooked trunk that has the mudra “Om”, big fan-like ears, a broken tusk, dumpling containing jaggery (called kudumu in Telugu) in the hand, a little mouse nearby – this is the form of Lord Ganapathy. As soon as one sees this form, he will feel like laughing. The Lord is happy when people laugh because he is of the form of happiness. The Lord wants everyone to gain that state of happiness and experience that joy. That is why, he has a strange form that attracts everyone.

In reality, there is no one as handsome and beautiful as Him. The Lord also has a name, Sundarakaraya Namah (Sundara = beautiful; Akara = form). Once upon a time, the beautiful sky was born to Siva and Parvati as their son. That is the beauty we see. That son is Lord Ganapathy. Since what the beings eventually attain and experience is Sachchidananda, Ganapathy has assumed the form of Sachchidananda. Obstacles (vighna = obstacle) are the cause of sorrows. With a view that if those obstacles are withheld, devotees will not have any sorrows or difficulties, our Lord withheld those obstacles and became Vighneshwara (Lord of obstacles).

Even in Yoga Vidya, Lord Ganapathy is first presented as the presiding deity of Mooladhara Chakra. For any worship to be performed, for any task to be embarked upon, for any auspicious task to be sanctified, one should first worship the Lord. He is the one that causes obstacles. Therefore, He is the that also removes the obstacles. He is also the one that grants happiness. That is why it is very good for us to always remember the Lord.

Lord Ganapathy incarnated today. He likes Bermuda grass a lot

. Therefore, on this day, the Lord should be worshiped with Bermuda grass. He should be worshiped with 21 varieties of leaves and plants (Eka Vimsati). Savory balls made primarily from rice flour (undrallu in Telugu), the jaggery dumpling (kudumulu in Telugu), bananas, coconuts and sugar canes should be offered as Naivedyam. Sri Krishna and the Pandavas worshiped Ganapathy and earned his blessings. During the churning of the ocean of milk, both the gods and the demons worshiped Ganapathy and resumed churning the ocean. It is said that from them on, they did not encounter any obstacles. The gods who had noble intentions, however, got the nectar. They did not encounter any obstacles of course, but one should also have good intentions. Although the Lord is the enabler of all tasks, we should remember that he is responsible for all the good actions. Further, during the slaying of Tripurasura, Lord Shiva worshiped Ganapathy and achieved victory. During that time, Ganapathy emerged from Lord Shiva’s heart and initiated him into the 1000 names (of Ganapathy).

Worship of Ganapathy is especially described in the scriptures relating to Yoga and Tantra. The notable incarnations of the Lord have been explained in very great detail. Siddhi (supernatural power) and Buddhi (intellect) are his wives. Shubha (auspiciousness) and Labha (profit) are said to be his sons. Like this, everything auspicious is related to the Lord’s family. It can be said that he has bundled all the goodness and auspiciousness in himself. If we worship Him, He will shower all those on us. That is why, to be victorious in their respective tasks, students, business men, the young, the old etc should worship Lord Ganapathy with devotion and dedication. The Lord dearly loves his parents. He circumambulated them 3 times and become the leader of the Ganas (attendants of Lord Shiva). Therefore, the Lord specially blesses those who serve their parents.

The worship of Lord Ganapathy bestows supernatural powers (Siddhis). It makes them intelligent. It grants auspiciousness and accrues profits. Today, perform Siddhi Vinayaka vrata with devotion. May you receive Ganapathy’s grace.

I bless that that by the grace of Lord Sri Kalagni Shamana Datta and Lord Ganapathy, may nobody get attached to unjust blame and accusations on Vinayaka Chavithi. May the tasks you plan be successful.

Jaya Guru Datta. Sri Guru Datta.
