Wealth: I remember what Appaji told us in a discourse some years ago. Our relationship with God and with Guru has become very transactional. When we see Guru, or when we go to a temple, we pray because we want more money, we want more luxury. “ There are so many coconuts tied around the Karya Siddhi Anjaneya temple. I can hear your prayers in all of them.. You are all making applications for some more money, one more promotion, one more car, one more house, one more child.. with all these kind of applications do you think you will get closer to God ? Are you not ashamed of yourself ? What have you learnt after being with Appaji for so many years ? You must ask for bhakti, ask for shradha in whatever you do, ask for dedication and devotion in your chosen fields of endeavor, ask for ability to do more Guru Seva.” When Anjaneya opened his heart, Rama and Sita were inside it.. not wealth and luxury. That is what made Anjaneya so dear to Rama. So my Gurudeva, I want to be your Hanuman. I want to be in your Seva always. That is my real wealth. If more of material wealth and luxury will make me forget you my Lord, I have no desire for that. Keep me this way, please! Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta! Wealth and luxury are like the clouds that hide the sun. We fail to see that life on this planet is sustained by the sun that’s hidden by the clouds. Similarly, wealth and luxury make us forget that God is like the sun that sustains all life and everything happens by His will alone. The delusion caused by Maya is so strong that even someone with a lot of sadhana under his belt can be lost in the world of wealth and luxury. A sense of ego and ownership takes over and the sense organs draw the individual toward transient physical comforts that are enabled by such wealth.
Swamiji says that people mostly pray to God to bless them with wealth. Perhaps, it’s like asking God to bless them to walk away from God. That is why Swamiji says that one must first pray for the ability to pray correctly and for the right buddhi or mindset. Obeisances at the Holy Lotus Feet!
