A teacher begins with letters, integrates them into words, and then integrates words into poems. Likewise, our Gurudeva integrates – principles of mind ( MMS 74,78), peace (MMS 75), desire & delusion ( MMS 79), the benefit of chanting Rama Nama (MMS 76), the bhajan ‘Rama namame nadu garjanam’ ( Album – Naadaanjaneya – Telugu ) and visuals to match – to make every frame of this MMS a poetic experience. Ideal for a relaxed weekend reflection. Serious students of the ‘Sathguru School of Spirituality’ may want to revisit the MMSs seen in brackets for a deeper reflection. Try!

Yes, desire deludes the mind – as it did for Ravana. What a great Shiva bhakta he was.. what a great warrior and mighty king he was. But all these virtues were in vain.. when his mind was clouded by his desire for Sita. And yes, despondency dries the mind as it did for the mighty Arjuna when he threw his bow and arrow refusing to fight, before the start of the Mahabharatha war. If such mind numbing experiences can happen to mighty personalities like Ravana and Arjuna, what to say about lesser mortals like us ?

Well, if His Holiness is provoking this question, He also has the answer. He urges us to rise above such enticing deluding desire, by taking refuge in Rama Nama. ‘Rama’ as root verb stands for ‘revel, enjoy’. That spirit of joy comes alive as Gurudeva sings “Rama Namamu Nadu Garjanam .. Kamadevunaku idi visarjanam < that name dismisses my desires > For those who hesitate to take such refuge, His Holiness convincingly uses the imagery of the Dove – a symbol of peace, and also a symbol of how a sharanaagatha is to be protected.

In the Ramayana, Vibheeshana surrenders to Rama and seeks refuge in him. “He is betraying his own brother.. so how can we trust him ?” Sugreeva asks. Rama responds with Kapootha Upaakhyaanam: : “When a mere bird could give up its life for protecting a sharanaagata, could a Prince of Ikshvaaku dynasty refuse to provide refuge to one who has surrendered?” asked Sri Rama, reiterating that it was His life’s mission to offer protection to those who surrender to him. Such is the divine glory of Rama.

Dear Appaji, We get your message loud and clear. We have not seen Rama. You are our Ram. We will chant Rama Nama with a spirit of surrender at your lotus feet. Each one of us know how we are benefitting from that sharanagati. Yes, we falter, we get naughty, we stumble.. we again get up and walk in your chosen path. And you smile at us – like you are smiling in this MMS. < Go back to that smile.. it is worth enjoying it again > You smile like a mother does when she wonders at all the pranks her children play. Keep smiling, Gurudeva ! Your smile is ‘visarjana’ for our desires. Keep blessing us, our dear Lord Rama! We will give up our desires, prevent despondency and grow up to be Hanuman’s you will be proud of.
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

JGDH Puttuji! Hope increases the activity of desire, helps in restraining bad luck, and the influence it has on depressing emotions!! We always turn to Hope to make our future better than the present. But on the flip, Despondency weakens desire!! Despondency dissuades us from Hoping and deprives us of courage!

Appaji through this video is urging all of us not to fall into the trap and give up both these characteristics and lead a better detached life!! This video/Message is so comforting, Appaji is smiling all through which is very encouraging! He is the Strength and Force which makes us stand up after falling, helping us to dust away all the bruises! Vivifying Video!!!

Appaji, how you have accepted all of us without any differences, this question always surprised me. I have been a problem child right from the start and you always knew it. Today, if I have mellowed down, I owe it to you, Appaji. How each of your lesson has made me stronger, how it molded me into a better soul, how you dissolved my useless ego, all are absolute miracles. I was feeling very sad about some legal proceedings and felt defeated. I was talking to my uncle later in the day and I told him how I felt. His words reminded me about what the purpose of all this is. I had to fight with a lot of people and things, only to get to you what you asked for. For a long time, I had forgotten the intrinsic purpose and was burning with the wish of seeing my opponent down on streets. I was very very negative towards the whole world around me. Too much sadness and despondency was killing the soul within me. Until uncle reminded me that my defeat was really not a defeat. It was your purpose that was getting solved. There was no reason for me to feel defeated. Because, I was following your instructions and only your instructions. Rest of the world was non existent. This episode really made me unlearn my definitions of self-respect and ego. Your message today made me learn it new again. Power of repitition is too strong to be ignored. Thank You Appaji. You always find people and situations to remind me of what my purpoise is. Just another proof that you are watching over me always. Gratitude is too small a word to explain what I feel to be under your guidance and support. Your pictures speak a thousand words!! Pranams to your lotus feet. Lots of love too. JGD!

    • on August 25, 2012 at 9:49 am

JGD Puttuji. Love the interwoven messages. Really, Appaji is teaching us from the scratch. Making us unlearn what we think we know and make us learn anew. If formal school has taught us to be street smart, Appaji’s school is teaching us to stand above that, be better humans. His lessons are dissolving our past karma, He is holding our hand and making us cross this illusion. We are all rising from dust. Thank You Appaji.
What I also love are Puttuji’s explanations. Mythology has always been unknown to me. Each MMS has an element of mythology in them. I am learning a lot through your explanations, Puttuji. Thanks for all your messages. Superb superb explanations 🙂 JGD!

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji! Since your first message about despondency, I’ve been praying about my own despondency that comes at times, remembering Your teaching to ask Lord Ganapathy to help us remove those inner obstacles and demons. So much resistance and fear can lurk in that emotion! So much confusion from things many of us have learned in our past. But You are really showing us the right path, the true path that leads us to lasting happiness. Within that despondency, Swamiji, sometimes so many of us resist the gifts that You are giving us. Not because we don’t appreciate them, or value them, or want them, but because sometimes we are afraid of accepting them. Something inside frightens us because we would be in unknown territory if we changed our lives or some old voice inside tells us we aren’t worthy of them. Help us all to have the courage to accept these gifts and the willingness to change. Helps us let go of our attachments to old memories and habits and addictions to negative emotions that keep us from the bliss you are offering us. Rama, Rama, Rama!

Normally I hear and feel my Guru in me and become on this way alway answers to my questions. I am very good guided, it is wonderful. But sometimes it is very difficult to hear the right answer in me: always when there are desires, I am not sure, if the inner voice is the voice from Swamiji or a voice from my deeper levels, which cheat me. I must be very carefully to different, what is the real voice of my Guru, what is the answer from him. Without desires all would be more easy!

    • Phani Prasanthi on August 25, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Gurubyo namaha. All actions are performed, with the body, senses, mind and intellect. If desire resides in these, it hinders the performance of spiritual actions. According to Bhagavad Geta, out of desire comes attachments and out of attachment a person becomes deluded by seeking things in order to satisfy their craving. The description presented in this MMS is in very understandable way. So many Thanks to our Sadguru for teaching us the Extraordinary Devotional concepts. Millions of Pranams to the lotus feet of Our Sadguru.

    Jai Guru Datta,
Your invitation to match several videos in view, dear Puttuji, is really a nice weekend reflection.
I also had this idea, but did not do it yet.
Desire and despondency … what could lie in between to help refresh the mind? I asked myself.
Watching the beautiful flower that soothes the eyes, I got the answer,
listening to “Jonathan seagull” ( a book that uplifted my mind … for me this bird is a seagull)
chanting “Ram”, how sweet ! That “Rama” stands for joy makes me even more happy …
Now to Ravana; OH ::: AND Arjuna …
For me it`s a very tragic thing, when the status of responibility and strength gets lost by weakness of desire or despondency.
What about us devotees, playing pranks on our Mother, Sri Swamiji seeing us waste our lifetime
till it is too late ?
I hope, we still have a chance. These videos help !

    • Archana Penukonda on August 25, 2012 at 5:30 pm

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You for today’s lesson, Puttuji! Reflecting on this video, this message strikes at heart of what ails this worldly life. Desires have its root in the mind. Since this world is a projection of our mind, the desires that spring in this mind make up our world and seem to give it a sense of purpose.

Until we are able to take a step back and understand that we are not the mind or the body or the sense organs, we are slaves of our mind and body. Desires are the root cause of all evil. We will continue to eat, drink, sleep and do as our body and mind demand. Desires lead us to believe in what doesn’t exist. Due to desires, we justify the needs of the body and mind, when in reality, the body and mind are the tools for our own upliftment. They are not our masters and shouldn’t dicatate our actions. And when we are unable to satisfy the desires, we become despondent and lose interest in thinking through things objectively and performing the appropriate action. Despondency causes us to lose hope and give up. If the purpose of our life is to overcome the vagaries of the mind and attain peace, giving up hope will deprive us of the energy and the motivation to do anything, let alone conquer the mind.

This seems to be one of the hardest disciplines to practice. I haven’t even scratched the surface. But, unless I take small steps now to overcome desires and despondency, I won’t be have that real peace of mind that our Sathguru is showing is the way to. Obeisances at the Holy Lotus Feet!

    Jaya Guru Datta!
Thank You Sri Swamiji for reminding us that desire leads the mind in the wrong direction. We have to keep care for our desires day for day. On the other side we should not be too hard against our selves. We should be caring for us like a dear mother would care for her child. You give as the best example, dear Sadgurudeva. You the most caring and most wonderful Divine Mother to us.

Jaya Guru Datta. How great is the power of desire which leads to attachment. One way of combatting this is to surrender to the divine feet of our beloved Sadguru Sri Rama who grants rewards and salvation as He sees fit. This special bond between bhakta and Sadguru enables the senses to be controlled and avoids disaster and dispondency in our lives.

    • on August 25, 2012 at 9:45 pm

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,
Beautiful explanation provided by Puttugamji to the MMS. In Gita Chapter 2 verses 62 and 63 talk about how desires arise and delude the mind. Below is an excerpt from Gita book that lists seven steps in an order leading to one’s fall:

    1) Thinking of worldly objects again and again
    2) Attachment
    3) Desire
    4) Anger
    5) Delusion (you forget yourself, your surroundings, family background, gurus teaching in this state)
    6) Loss of memory
    7) Ruin of reason (loss of discrimination that tells you what to do and what not to do)

This is how one performs evil deeds and suffers various maladies. We must know the nature of the mind; then we can fight against it and build up a more stable and healthy personality.

Sri Swamiji has provided us so many ways to help us divert the mind from thinking about worldly objects – Namasankeertana, Hanuman mantra japa and writing, MMS messages to reflect, ashramas globally to do seva, Shatashloki ramayana yagna etc. Let us all follow the master and overcome our desires and despodency.

Humble prostrations to the lotus feet of Sri Swamiji who gives strength to our mind.

JGD. Amazing that 2 great Holy books, Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita and are tied together in Puttuji’s commentary…so big a tree from Swamiji’s small MMS. Today , I am additionally thankful that Puttuji has revealed another symbolism behind the use of the dove, as my western minded, layman’s understanding would have restricted the symbolism to Dove = peace. So much to give thanks and praises for! Please accept my humble prostrations. JGD.

  3. It was the day Bala Swamiji said that saying the Om Namo Hanumathe mantra would result in Rama coming to us! Just before going to bed that night, I thought, I’ve said this mantra thousands and thousands of times and Rama has not come!
In the wee hours of morning I awoke..peacefully..and I heard these thoughts in my mind…as if I was being taught…
“RAMA” is NOT a physical entity that will come to see you and say HI!
RAMA is a STATE of mind…RA MA… It is a state of being… a state of peace…It is a union YOGA…..And this is MMS video shows the very same thing that we will get Peace from chanting Rama and the Om Namo Hanumathe mantra…thanks and pranams Swamiji!

Namaste Puttuji, wonderful video with Appaji’s cute smile, a bird chanting Ram Ram and wonderful bhajan in background. Desire deludes mind and despondency dries it up. Very much true. Desire to acquire something masks one’s own good characters and despondency makes one feeble. Both are not good. To reach a goal, one should be determined and attain it righteously. One should never feel hopeless at any point of time and should not let the goal over ride the mind and mask one’s own good characters. Both of these are attained only by the grace of Sadguru and grace of Sadguru is attained only through ardent devotion towards Him. Namaste Puttuji.
