Why are there so many inequalities between people?

These differences are the outcome of the pious-impious deeds of the previous births. Suppose a person is always kicking the cross of Jesus. Tell me, what is the use of giving him legs? A person who constantly uses foul language will experience speech impairment in another birth. There is a sacred text called ‘karma vipaka yoga’ which explains how the present good and bad experiences are the outcome of the pious-impious deeds of previous births.

What are the consequences of suicide?

According to our shastras suicide, killing of children, Brahmins, cows as well as abortions are the most terrible sins (mahā pāpa). That is why, in case you know that someone has suicidal tendencies, you should try to help him and avert it. Once that period is over, only then we can say that he has come out of it successfully or that the danger is passed.

If a person commits suicide in one birth, then for the next 7 consequent births at the same age and same time he will commit suicide again. The animals that he killed in that birth also get counted. So even if we are facing extreme difficulties in life, it is better to face it and wait for natural death.

These days people have mastered the art of remaining unhappy. They love to be depressed. They are attached to such feelings. “My mind is dull, my heart is heavy, my lover has deserted me…” they cry repeatedly. This becomes their mantra. Learn to listen to good music whenever you are overcome by such feelings. Serve the needy. Slowly over a period of time, such feelings will disappear. Visit holy places.  Meet Mahatmas and attend satsang. In Mysore ashram there are plenty of such reformed persons.

What is the karma of the animals killed and consumed by humans?

This karma is a wheel. You kill a fish and eat it today. In the next birth that fish will be born as a human being and you as a fish. This is a peculiar trade. It is a tradition or continuation of revenge. This is Swamiji’s experience and belief. This is the reason why Hindu sages recommend vegetarianism.

Killing an animal is undoubtedly a bad karma; this karma will not leave you. Unnatural death in any form is a sin. It is up to you whether you want to listen and follow my teachings or not. Like a doctor I am giving advice. If you will totally listen and follow like a good patient, you will improve. If you don’t wish to listen, I will not feel sorry. I do not wish to interfere in your karma cycle. Like a mirror, I can only reflect your karma and experiences. I am only a witness to all your karma; I reflect the same. I very rarely ‘order’ anyone to obey me. The people who listen are the real lucky ones.

What is the difference between Hinduism and Buddhism? Do they lead to the same goal?

There is no difference. Both of them show the way from darkness to light. When there is darkness around us we use a matchbox, candle or a gaslight to brighten up the area. All these are nothing but forms of light.

When a person is sick he may take allopathic, homoeopathic or any other form of medicine to cure the disease. The type of medicine is not important. It is important that he is cured. Let us consider another example. Suppose a person wishes to travel from one place to another. He may decide to go by boat, ship, plane or a train. He may even decide to walk. What is important here is not the mode of travel but the fact that he has to reach the destination properly and safely.

There once lived a smart and wise king. He desired to know which the shortest and fastest way to reach God. Immediately he called for a conference of all the learned pundits belonging to various religions. They began discussing on this subject. However they were unable to reach a consensus. Each one argued that his method was the best.

The king kept waiting for the solution. Feeling sorry at the king’s plight, God himself came to him in the form of an old man and said that he could give the correct answer provided the king follows him to the tree on the other bank of the river. The king eagerly walked behind the old man. When they reached the bank, the old man asked for a boat to take them to the other shore. The boat was brought.

The old man saw the boat and said, “This boat is not strong. We could drown. I will not get in.” Now the king ordered for another boat. The old man said that the boatman looked inexperienced and he would not go in such a boat. In this way for every boat that was brought the old man continued to give different excuses. Finally the exasperated king said  “all we need is to cross this river. As soon as we cross our need for the boat ceases. Does it matter which type of boat is good?”

Now the old man replied, “O King, the teaching that I wanted to give you is complete. To cross this river any boat is enough. Similarly to cross the ocean called illusion (maya), all the religions and methods are only different types of boats. If you keep on changing the boats you will never reach the destination. It is only a waste of time. Therefore follow your Guru. Stop trying to find a different way.”

Why do Hindus decorate a dead body?

Shava (dead body) is Shiva! That’s why!

What is a cremation ground? It is nothing bur Shiva’s land (Rudra bhoomi). When we think of worshipping Shiva we automatically think of worshipping Him with waters of Ganga. After offering water oblations, we apply Vibhuti and sandal paste to the Shiva linga. Thereafter a third eye is drawn and it is decorated with Kumkum. It is worshipped with Tulasi and bilva leaves and flowers.

Hindus believe that a dead person has united with Shiva. Therefore it is bathed and decorated on its last journey.
