At a very deep level, this MMS is a confession.. by our Divine Father Appaji to his Divine Mother, on behalf of all of us his incorrigible children. We have created a self-centered, transactional world.. where the only guiding principle is “What is in it for me?”. The ends justify the means. We don’t seem to be bothered. Who cares? Gurudeva does. That is why we call him Appaji!

Imagine a earth without water to drink, without pure air to breathe, without protection from excessive heat of the sun. What kind of a life will our future generations live ? At a subtler level, imagine a mind full of envy, greed, prejudice, revenge, falsehood, anger, lust… with such pollution in our inner environment, are we not suffocating our conscience, and damaging our inner fabric ? Having become a slave of our senses and having impoverished our inner personality, we refuse to fathom what life will be like when the same senses that we serve today become dysfunctional tomorrow. We know that day will come. But we have no time to think of that today. We are busy making hay while the sun shines.. at the expense of our own future. The sad truth is, we are suffering this behavior because of our knowledge.. not because of our ignorance. Like any amount of statutory warning on a cigarette packet fails to dissuade a chronic patient from smoking, we too have gotten so addicted to this sense gratification that all the statutory warning of our scriptures falls on deaf ears.

The virus seems to have corrupted the programming somuch.. that it threatens to corrupt the hard disk. Somewhat similarly, the cancerous mind threatens to corrode the brain, and the polluted atmosphere threatens to damage the earth and the very fabric of human society. But, man doesn’t seem bothered about death.. he has taken it for granted. He doesn’t seem bothered about the future of this planet. Gurudeva is very pained by such apathy, in this kaliyuga. So, in this MMS, He exhorts man to think beyond this janma.. “Hello friend! You will be reborn in this same world that you will leave behind one day. Why are you spoiling it ? If you are righteous today, you will live a good life when you revisit this planet. If not.. what life will you live in a society that is full of asuras ? what life will you live in a planet that has no potable water or pure air to breathe ?” This is a wake up call.. for the gross and the subtle levels of human intelligence.. compactly packed in 12 simple words !!

In the accompanying kannada bhajan, His Holiness confesses and pleads to His Divine Mother Jaya Lakshmi Mata to forgive all our mistakes ( thappugalannu mannisamma ). Oh Mother I shout with all my might ( Daniya erisi kooguve ) asking you for forgiveness! Please forgive the mistakes even at a thought level that I have committed with full awareness ( Eccaradalli tilidu madida paapada chintaya kshamisamma ). We join you in that confession Appaji ! You will never find us.. your children.. guilty of such behavior. Keep blessing us, so that our good deeds will result in a good future birth not just for ourselves, but for humanity as a whole.
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji! Beautiful message this morning! Again You are reminding us that our own thoughts and actions shape our world and that it is we who are creating our future with our desires and mind. I remember a talk you gave in the last few years very similar to these recent messages about how the universe responds to all of our desires and how it is our actions, thoughts and reactions that are constantly shaping our lives. You told us that day that as we go through life and suddenly have some unexpected change of fortune, good or bad, that it is the results of our past actions coming into play. Just like Krishna, You reminded us to surrender our desires to the divine since we really can’t see the big picture and don’t always know what is best for us. You reminded us that like children, by the time the universe responded, often our desires had gone in a totally different direction and we didn’t want what we had asked for before….You told us that God knew best what we needed and when and that God is always the doer and therefore we needed to surrender. Instead, like Krishna, you reminded us to do our Duty and leave the results to God. But still, then as now, you stressed that we are responsible for our actions in the present moment for they have power. This month, in the Bhakti Mala, you have given such a beautiful teaching on how the energy of human actions affects Dharma and the very construction of the universe! This was a profound teaching to me and I am seeing that you are putting little pieces of the puzzle in various places. Here, Bhakti Mala, Atma Katha, your music, your daily talks, other Puttugam postings, etc. Help me to live the best life I can in each present moment making the best choices possible in that second, and to surrender more deeply each day, for it seems if we learn to do this,we will be supporting Dharma and in return Dharma will be taking care of us….such a beautiful interplay between human and divine you are revealing to us!

JGD Appaji – Please be with us always such that we do good, hear good and be good. Bless us that in all our future birth me & my family should always be with you – SGD

  1. Dear Appaji. Thank you for this wonderful video full of Hope and Joy. I hope, that my future birth will again close to you. Thank you for beeing here in this life. I looking forward to see you in London for this great concert. OM AIM HREEM SHREEM KAMESYAI NAMAH.

  2. What wonderful motivation for us, Puttuji! Many times after looking around in this world the question comes to mind, “Why me?” when faced with problems that others are spared of. Also the questions come to mind, ”Others are getting away with murder. Why can I not indulge in this one small deception when the rewards seem so promising and assured? What is there to fear?”
Our guru clearly explains to us that we are what our thoughts are. If our thoughts are muck, so are we. If our thoughts are impure, so are we. If our actions, that follow our thoughts, are evil, so are we. If our inclinations are to be false and to deceive, we are full of falsehood and deceit. That others are doing it, is no reason for us to do it. Others are not going to experience our bleak future as a result of our wicked actions. It is we, who are going to suffer, inescapably. Our past and our present thoughts and actions determine our future, most definitely. That is the only acceptable explanation for our present good or bad condition, that we have brought it upon ourselves by our past good or bad thoughts and actions.
The most important thing to remember here is that our Sadgurudeva has cautioned us in a previous MMS that Bad thoughts are as harmful as bad actions. Even entertaining undesirable thoughts is going to hurt us. That is why it is most crucial that we examine our every single thought and filter it carefully, if we wish to be spared trouble in the future. Thank you Puttuji for this most valuable piece of information. Jaya Guru Datta

I personally feel that this is a warning for me; whenever my mind goes on to invite bad thoughts and nurture them.

  3. ALL THOUGHTS ARE FOLLOWED BY ACTION, SO WE SHOULD ALWAYS ENTERTAIN GOOD THOUGHTS AND GOOD DEEDS ARE DONE SPONTANEOUSLY WITHOUT ANY MOTIVE OR FOR ANY RESULT.
THIS IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH THE CONSTANT BLESSING AND WATCHFUL EYE OF OUR PARAMAGURU APPAJI, WHO IS THERE TO GUIDE US.

That is very true, Swamiji, but it looks to me that, to the extent one can do good deeds depends on the karma of previous janma also. Though we are willing to do good deeds, many times we experience lot of forces acting against our good will and finally dragging us away from that path. Still I agree that we have to stand firm in our path and try our best to do good always.

Thank you, Swamiji, for sending such good thoughts like these and for the beautiful video also.

I know since several time that I want live this life in a way, which give good reults. I can’t understand, when mankinds live without thinking about the future, which comes after this life. For me there is no sence in the life whet it wouldn’t go on in an other way. Because it is like this, that life is going on, it is for me very clear, that I must make the best with every from my days, to have a good base for the future. Always, when life is very sttrong or I have much problems, I remember, that all, what I do now, is helping me much in future. This gives much motivation to continue, live a goo life!

    • on August 18, 2012 at 9:57 am

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

Thank you Swamiji for the beautiful message. This message reminded me of a quote – “Men in general lay all the blame of life on their fellowmen, or failing that, on GOd… and say it is fate. Where is fate, and who is fate? We reap what we sow. We are the makers of our own fate. THis misery that I am suffering is of my own doing, and that very thing proves that it will have to be undone by me alone. THerefore, stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders, and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succour you want is within yourselves. Therefore, make your own future.”

Once we understand this we feel relieved as there will be no one else to point fingers. This will help us slowly understand the concept of karma. Karma or Action is a must. We cannot escape it. Karma can be either good or bad. By doing good karma we will get happiness, peace and good future births. By doing bad karma we will get illness, suffering and lower births. If we know that we have to live on earth till we attain salvation this message motivates us to perform good deeds.

In Datta stavam it is said that the highest fruit of dharma is salvation. By continously performing good deeds we will receive higher births and attain salvation. The first two stories from ‘SAPTODAHARINI’ (Silpa Shastra, Fine Arts) that Datta tells to Kartaveeryaarjuna in Datta Darshanam book shows how by performing good deeds we will receive higher births and in the end salvation.

Below is one of the stories from Saptodharini from Datta Darshanam book –
“Indra, long ago there lived in the city of Kampilya, an expert in architecture, by the name of Vidhijna. He was not only proficient in architecture, but also in Vastu (house building), Jyothishya(astrology) and other sastras. What has to be particularly noted here is that he is peaceful, kind and discret . He was neither hypocritical, and did he harbour greed. Therefore , whoever he wanted to build a house in the city, got it constructed through him. Gradually, his income grew and the pressure of work increased. Therefore, he engaged a number of architects to assist him and paid them liberally . Through this he gained a good name also among his equals.

With the increase in income, his acts of charity and magnanimity (generosity of spirit) also increased and ultimately he became the royal architect . Thereafter , his fame spread far and wide. However much his earnings increased and fame grew, he never became conceited, he never spoke harshly, he never talked of his desires, nor did he ever utter a falsehood. He never talked anything to please others. Day by day his humility and meritorious acts increased. In course of time he died and he was a virtuous soul, he enjoyed happiness in heaven for long time. After this period of enjoyment expired., he was born as the king in the same city of Kampilya because of the merit he had earned. Due to the force of good samskaras of the past, he performed even more charitable deeds. He conducted sacrifices and worshipped gods and Brahmins a large scale . Then he died and again he went to heaven, and after enjoying pleasures there for a long time, now he was born again, as a Brahmin in this world.

In this birth he studied the vedas and sastras, diligently practised a life of Dharma, pursued yoga, intently and in the end took sanyas and became a jivanmukta. You seen , Mahendra, he began with architecture and in the end achieved jivanmukti. In climbing thus step by step, there will be no doubt some fatigue, but the path will not be the wrong path. The thing not to be forgotten is that he never abandoned good qualities and principles. Doesn’t this story show that possessing these virtues, even though Silpasastra also, a man can attain liberation.”
Sri Datta Darshanam book can be purcahsed online at – dycusa.org/dyc/webstore/Products/311-sri-datta-darshanam.aspx

Let us all pray to Sri Swamiji for strength, intellect and knowledge to perform good deeds.

Humble prostrations to lotus feet of Sri Swamiji who shows us the way to perform good deeds and elevate us.

  4. Jgd the racey beginning with the image of Mother and Sun halo reminds me of Father Sun and Mother Nature and the importance of performing Agni puja to cleanse sins and give humble offerings to the Mother earth. It seems to signify that we must respect Mother earth in order to ensure the continuum of life, the cosmic dance, as earlier advised by Sri Swamiji – that the Dharma of Life is to ensure sustainable life for all. That means a sustainable earth. However much governments have been talking about ensuring a sustainable future for the people in this world, millions starve to death daily in EVERY part of the world and not just India and Africa as others would like to have us believe. In my own case there have been many times when after paying all my my bills, taxes etc I have been left with nothing, no food sometimes for a week. This happened just recently and all I did was trust that God would provide. And He did, from no where friends and neighbours were bringing vegetables grown from their own gardens. Unfortunately, probably due to past deeds, I don’t have access to land to have a garden so all I could do is trust in God. It was a great feeling to let go and trust. I have seen people starve even in “first world” countries such as Switzerland, US etc. Just yesterday I was telling my mother in my workplace, I can’t tell who is the real executive from other employees because everyone is hyper dressing. Similarly, certain countries portray images that make it seem like the best place to live – but in reality, no where is the best place to live other than in this virtual world Sri Swamiji has constructed. This IS my garden, my food for thought. Sometimes I feel so dismayed and it made me realized the truth in the words of the Rishis that appeared to Sri Swamiji and told Him of the difficult task He is attempting to accomplish. They say no man is an island and it is true. This job can only get done if we all work together. Unfortunately, everyone has their own intentions in this world, their own desires to become the BEST, the RICHEST and to say I SAVED THE WORLD, I developed this idea, it was ME. The problem is that these are the people that make it to the top and then invest the money of others for their own personal gains and ego. Millions suffer due to this. Sri Swamiji has initiated the Share Your Food Program to counter act this. Sri Swamiji holding the parrot seems to symbolize sharing Sri Swamijis messages with others whether it is MMS messages that enlighten us and make us think about our life and acts or whether it is to do good deeds such as sharing food – Let us share this idea to Share food with everyone we know. In the same way SRI Swamiji has PUTTUJI as a helper to spread His messages, and devotees sharing their own feelings and comments to help us all understand every deep message of God Let us all try in some way, whether we are recognized for it or not to share our food, share the Good Word as even Jesus instructed once. It cant be done by one person, we have to pool resources and help others. We have to pray that those in powerful places come to their senses and realize the true meaning of this life as Sri Swamiji has said: TO SERVE OTHERS. I try to remember daily that I SHOULD NOT SERVE MYSELF. it is very difficult, the mind looks for all types of ways to distract and cool itself. I don’t know about my next Life, but I believe this is my one and only Life and my BEST Life with struggles and good times, I have learnt so much and I have been blessed to see God in His own creation. I have been blessed to witness this play as real as it seems, it is all an ILLUSION, truely it is, but its the greatest ILLUSION I have ever witnessed. SO BE IT!!! Jai Hanuman SGD

JGD Appaji!! Very touching MMS (after yesterday’s bouncer). The bhajan is my prayer to you. Very very beautiful lyrics. Thank You Puttuji for elucidating it for us :-)I really think this MMS is reveling the secret of “Organic Growth” of every individual.
This MMS is a much refined and spiritual version of the proverb “Reap as you sow”. As much as we have a mortal life and responsiblities to be fulfilled at all stages of our life, we also have one goal to work towards, that being discovering the true “I” and how we can merge that with “You”. I am your special child who needs constant monitoring and support to be able to tread this spiritual journey. I know you have been very gentleand patient with me and your forgiveness has always changed me. Really Appaji, you are my only way. After my dad passed on, you said to my sister and me that we would find him in You and there have been countless times when I could actually see my dad’s soul within you. You have been our father, literally. Our Appaji!! We can never thank you enough for the grace and blessings you have showered upon us. Pranams at your lotus feet and lots of love 🙂 JGD!!

Jaya Guru Dutta! I was so worried reading this message, I desperately looked for Puttuji’s interpretation. It was great relief reading it.As rightly said by Puttuji, 12 words say it all.. We pray to His Holiness to steer us clear of vasanas, desires and indiscretion that lead to committing sins that warrant another birth. We so often think that we are not capable of ensuring our own mukti, that we praise the grace of our Guru for not having given other souls as children to be responsible for! Every day, every hour, our prayer at the feet of His Holiness is to be in our hearts leading our way – our decisions, our feelings and our very being! Let our minds rest on the Holy Feet of our Guru and on nothing else! Sri Guru Dutta. Balu and Sreevidya

I don’t know what it is about these Kannada bhajans on Mother Goddess that jSri Swamiji sang during Navaratri 2003. The stirring created to do better, to seek forgiveness, to feel Mata. While I believed my thinking to be “not bad”; in hindsight it just wasn’t as good as it could be. I feel so blessed to have been given this life of abundance and Love. I don’t want to squander it and feel as though I can do anything because I am capable and because it feels good. That has changed significantly since Sri Swamiji has come into my life and His bhajans reverberate throughout my being. I can’t know what is ahead, except for what my Datta Sadguru tells. If I imbibe and properly digest the food He gives, I don’t have to worry. Thank you Appaji. Jaya Guru Datta

All dharmas preaches to practise good deeds in life by extending a helping hand and not hurting anyone. Heb. 9:27 states “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. Immediately upon dying, your spirit/soul departs your body and goes back to God. If you have rejected God in this life, God will reject you in the afterlife because He has no choice.” For those who accept God, the afterlife is full of bliss, joy, and wonderful surprises. For those who reject God, the afterlife is lonely, dark, and miserable because of their separation from God. So good deeds on planet earth will give us bliss, joy and association with God forever.

    • Maurice Clarke on August 18, 2012 at 9:56 pm

JGD. To me, for Swamiji to reward with a good future birth from doing good actions in this life, these good deeds cannot be few and far between but be regular. So we must foster 2 habits – a habit of doing good deeds while at the same time inculcate a habit of stifling bad deeds. Swamiji also teaches us that habits have their source in the subtle mental tendencies called vritti and their nature is such that new habits are very hard to start and old ones are very had to stop.

As Puttuji points out too we humans have lots of entrenched bad old habits that are destroying our inner and outer worlds. With such an uphill task before us, it’s no wonder Swamiji frequently says that that only legitimate prayer is for us to ask for strength.

So dear Sadgurudeva, I pray for strength. Strength to kill all destructive vritti like Rama ending the lives the first sets of demons. Strength to overcome the expected backlash of old bad habits like Ravan seeking revenge for his fallen family and in so doing I prayer for strength to finish the game.

Thanks ever so much again for these wonderful MMS. JGD.

We have been blessed from past lives to be in the divine presence of Appaji today, not only seeing Him, but serving him in places like Aripo Datta Ganga and the Nada Sangama Steel Orchestra in Trinidad. In this present birth, I thank Sri Swamiji for giving meaning to our lives in the service of Bhagwan Sri Datta.

    Jaya Guru Datta
Sometime it feels that Sri Swamiji Himself is talking to us directly. I feel so connected when I watch each of these videos. Most of them are timely for a situation I face in that day.

  8. JGD Datta Peetham’s photo: His eyes appear like ours. But what He sees are different sights way beyond our imagination. His words sound like ours. But the energy and meaning that they carry are most profound and transcend our grasp. His thoughts seem like ours. Yet, they cover the breadth and depth of infinity and eternity. His smiles resemble ours but the magic they hold is indescribable. His actions are simple and most graceful. They have the strength to transform the world. Such is the divine personality of our most precious Sadgurudeva. Sri Guru Datta

This MMS is so simple, yet so profound. Buddha always said, what youdid in your previous life determines how you live this life. Similarly, how you live this life determines your future life. In the MMS i noted an even more important message about SUSTAINABILITY. Appaji is encouraging us to conserve nature, so that when we are reborn, we will be born into a habitable globe. Irrespective of anything , Our Beloved Sadguru, will continue to seek and find us in each of our lives. So let us a live a life of measured existence , with love and charity as our moto.

What a powerful video. words cannot explain the deep meaning of this video. Thank you puttuji for clearly explaining the meaning of this video. As per the scriptures we already know what is has to happen in the life will happen as per ones own karma, but if we do good deeds not only our next life will be good, but in this life also with Guru’s grace we get strength to tolerate the bad karma.
We always fall prey to our senses, that is why Pujya Guru Deva has given us Kriya Yoga to control our mind and senses. I pray to pujya gurudeva to bless us, so we will only do good deeds in this life.

Jaya Guru Datta – a very powerful music and message. Good deeds of past yield better births. What a call for all to be righteous !!! however, what if we dont even want the next birth. Well, there is answer for such inquiries from Appaji. That is a desire to be desireless. However, that is a good problem (desire) to have. Then – what do we do? nothing for a no re-birth? not at all. Karma and Gnana are two wings needed for the mumukshu. that is the commandment Sri Rama gave in his experiential learning from Viswamitra and Vasishtha. Karma will get you to a stage where you will be eligible for the gnana to attain salvation. What does this mean? this definitely means SATKARMA – which is nothing but the good deeds. So the good deeds have to be good at the first level, better and get to the best levels subsequently to be able to attain salvation through the gnana. The gnana thus attained will remain with the jeevi and will try not to get back to this vicious cycle of births and deaths. The same thing is elaborated in Guru Geeta and the many discourses of Appaji on Sri Guru Geeta. Thanks a lot Puttuji for the elaborate comment and Appaji for the great message.

Good deeds of this life ~ 18 Aug 2012
Namaste Puttuji, thank You for the beautiful video with Appaji’s bhajan suiting the quote as background music. Good deeds of this life results in good future births. Our good deeds in the past made us get near to Our Sadguru and following Him truthfully in this life itself is a good deed, not only good future births for ongoing spiritual practice but also liberation can be attained easily. Background bhajan says to forgive our mistakes. Sadguru’s way of forgiving our mistakes is by teaching the correct way. So that, disciple will not conduct bad deed again. Thank You Puttuji for being an instrument in our Sadguru, Sri Swamiji’s hand teaching us good deeds.
