His Holiness has brilliantly condensed the tenets of Bhakti Yoga and Karma Yoga in 14 words, against a picturesque backdrop of an island in the midst of the ocean! Ideal MMS for some deep reflection.

Prayer happens in our inner world. The essence of prayer is surrender, about feeling one with our Lord within, about communion. When we pray, we bow down to our Creator. Everything depends on Him. No distractions. Thyagaraja prayed as if everything depended on Rama. Meera adored her Krishna as if everything depended on him. That is how they progressed in their Path of Devotion (Bhakti Yoga). When in prayer, one feels like a small island that is nourished by the large ocean all around. That is how small one feels in the mercy of His Creator. That feeling is so essential to keep his EGO in check. For, when the (EGO) comes in to play, it can (E)dge (G)od (O)ut !

Work happens in the world around us. The essence of Work is our ability to act, to serve, to contribute.. to leverage our self-confidence in striving for the mutual betterment of our self, and our community at large. At work everything depends on us. Work is ownership, self-initiative, selfless dedication, focused action. When a despondent Arjuna dropped his bow and arrow in the battlefield, Krishna commanded him to stop behaving like a eunuch, get up and fight.. making him realize that everything depended on Arjuna himself. It is like.. an excellent communicator takes full responsibility for his communication. He does not say others do not know how to talk or how to listen. When at work, one has to think big and feel big like the ocean, which nourishes life on the island. It is about being in selfless dedication to a larger sense of purpose. That feeling is essential to keep his EGO in check. For, when the (EGO) comes into play, it can (E)dge (G)reatness (O)ut.

As seen in the final frame in this MMS, Appaji is Krishna.. commanding us in our paths of devotion and action. Devotion we need, for inner well being. Action we need for well being in the world outside. Pranams at the holy feet of our Gurudeva for yet another inspiring MMS. We will follow the master, faith in God (devotion), fight till the end (action), and finish the game.
    Jaya Guru Datta.
    Your Puttuji.

    Wow!Superb video Puttuji!

  1. Puttuji, you have outdone yourself again! One after another, your wonderful MMS videos are filling me with awe and wonder. What depth of meaning you have packed into each single word of each quotation, and how beautifully you enhance the message with the audio visuals!. You are unequaled!
Your explanatory comment is really the icing on the cake. No matter how much of it I lick, I am not satisfied. It is so sweet and full of flavorful essence.
You have emphasized the importance of merging devotion with action. You have clearly explained to us how to achieve this in this confusion-filled life of ours. First of all, we have to understand in the depths of our hearts, without a doubt, that everything is being done by God and God alone – all thinking, all activity, and all experience is God’s alone, because there is nothing in Existence other than God. Once that is accepted, all that we can do is to praise God with all our heart and soul for His wondrous creativity, strength and compassion. There is no room for asking for any petty favors from Him. Because who are we? We are all a part of He!
Next comes the tricky part of action. God throws this thick sheet in our face covering our vision of His doer-ship of all. He drowns us in the illusion and the false perception that we exist as separate beings from Him, that we are the ones thinking our thoughts, and that we are the ones doing our actions. We then begin the wrong assumption that we judge our actions as being either good or bad. What a wondrous Maya this is! What utter foolishness is this on our part! Once this misunderstanding is recognized, all we have to do is to simply surrender to God’s will. Then action takes place as He wills. There is no further question then, as to whether we are doing what we are supposed to be doing, whether we are doing it how we are supposed to be doing it, and whether we are doing it when we are supposed to be doing it. We become mere tools in God’s hands and the work gets done to perfection by God’s standards. Our heart and soul are immersed in our work then, because there is no room for doubt or error. If other men judge our work to be imperfect, it just means that they are not recognizing that it is God who is working through us and not us as individuals. They are then criticizing God’s work. That happens all the time by those whose EGO makes them think that they are greater than their CREATOR! Jaya Guru Datta

Phenomenal MMS…. ‘Praying as if everything depends on God’ guides us to follow the path of complete surrender to God or Guru and ‘working as if everything depends on us’ is working with complete dedication to work. Praying God is to always remind of the supreme power beyond human capabilities to make us realise the limitation of human thinking by limiting with “I”. Leaving every positive and negative results on God keeps us free from all bondage and tensions. Working with passion towards work, not only gives us job satisfaction but also gifts us with success. It’s a nice way to lead a peaceful life with contentment. It’s the way to love the life God has gifted us.

Jai Guru Datta Appaji – Jayaho Puttuji!

It is wonderful to see Appaji in all three forms (Mother, Father & Teacher) in yet another splendid MMS masterpiece video – energetic with background music of Jagadeesha Guru Datta and spectacular with the backdrop similar to Palakadali – imparting the Divine feeling of watching our sins getting cleansed away!

    Three Divine forms of Appaji:
    1. As a Mother (JaganMatha), earnestly and lovingly teaching us the power and quintessential purpose of Prayer (Bhakthi Yoga).
    2. As a Father (JagathPitha), urging us to have the attitude of selfless surrender while doing Work (Karma Yoga).
both of which graciously lead us to Appaji in His truest form (ViswaRupa) of
    3. The JagadGuru (Universal teacher) – LORD Sri Krishna, who is verily the PURUSHA principle: the real DOER behind our Prayers and Actions, as we emanated from Him and are His instruments.

Yearning to be your instrument in Prayer and Service in all lifetimes. The infinite joy we feel watching the Nandana MMS videos knows no boundaries!
Eternally indebted to you for your Compassionate teachings of the Highest Truths (Pragnanam Brahma).
    Sri Guru Datta!

    Jai Guru Datta,
for years I´ve been musing on the question about the right attitude towards effort. When to fight for a good cause and when to stop fighting for the same. Well, this sounds like an answer to me. I´ll be musing about this sentence now instead of my question. Besides this I will do my work. And I do my prayers.
    Thank you and JGD.

The sense of this video I try to live every day. But I also have learnd, that I must be careful with the second part of the text. I am therapeut and when I think always, that all îs depending on me, I work too much and don’t let at people enaugh room for themself. I must recognize, what is my tool and what is the work of the patient, what he has to do himself. Then also I must recognize, where I am able to do something and where this person needs the help of God. I alwasy must be attentiv, at every time, the whole day, that is very important. But perhaps that is also the meaning of this text: be so attentiv like all would be dependent on you. Like this i can understand the video now in a new way.

JGD.Sri Swamiji is telling us to be sincere in prayer.A sincere prayer has no inhibition in it.It should be like that of Drupadi!s prayer. At the height of prayer she raises both hands to Haven and asks for Lord’s intervention, forgetting that Her Modesty might be exposed.Lord appears instantly.

Nice guidance on how we should focus on our prayer as well as on our work in life.
At times, we neglect our daily prayer in the name of other works. Also at times, we neglect our work, our ideal behavior and ownership of our work in the name of prayers/ other rituals.

This message from Pujya Sri Swamiji provides the guidance as how we should maintain a perfect balance between these two aspects. We must have utmost devotion to God and utmost dedication to work on our life.

God helps those who helps themselves.Prayer and work together make the WINNING COMBINATION.

Pranams to the Lotus Feet of Sri Swamiji.

Appaji had given us this message, during the beginning of a new year. This quote had inspired Your child very much. Today, Your child experienced it.
Offer all efforts & results to Your holy feet.
Today, by Your grace, Your child passed with flying colours in her CA inter Grp 1 exams, today. As Appaji had taught her, she first took self – responsibility, attacked Her inner enemies, worked very hard, practised Naam Sankirtana, read your word, watched SSR & prayed to You.
    Thankyou Sri Swamiji.
Sri Swamiji’s pictures in the video are very nice & apt.
    JGD Puttuji.

SSR 13 crores is our next score.
Always at Your seva, is Your child.

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

What a beautiful message and beautiful explanation provided by Puttugamji. Puttugamji’s explanation shows the hidden treasure and should be read again and again. In yesterday’s MMS we were told to conquer our inner enemies to attain inner peace and now in today’s message we were given the essence of Bhakti and Karma Yoga. In today’s world we do exact opposite of what is provided in the message. We work as if everything is depended on God and pray as if everything is dependent on us. We do not take responsibility for our actions and blame God and others for everything that happens to us. For every work we are always depended on God and praying God to accomplish the work successfully. We are always looking for something to depend on and are using God for it. We are forgetting the infinite energy and potential each one of us have. We have to realize that we are part of God and hence have that infinite strength to accomplish any work. Below sloka beautifully explains it:

    Om Purnamadah Purnamidam
    Purnat Purnamudachyate
    Purnasya Purnamadaya
    Purnameva Vashsihate

God is perfect and from the perfect the universe is manifest. Each and every piece in the universe is also perfect. Though so many pieces of perfect have emanated from God, God is still perfect.

Humble prostrations to Sri Swamiji who is the personification of Bhakti and Karma Yoga.

    Om namo hanumate namaha

My Datta Sadguru has given many tools to refine the prayer process. Healing music, bhajans, stutis, stotra, stavams, etc. With these gifts, I have been better able to see the job more clearly and work in a more self sufficient manner. I find that when I am working on some project, listening to Sri Swamiji voice and music makes the process flow smoothly with more bliss. Jagadisha Guru Datta.

    • on August 7, 2012 at 2:50 pm

    Jaya Guru Datta!
Through the connection – or better communion with God we get to know what to do and what not. If we then perform the actions which are in complete harmony with God it is like the eruption of the air bubbles braking out of the water surface as wonderfully displayed in the last video sequence. We all can witness the moving action and power from people which act in harmony with God.
Koti pranams to the Divine Lotus Feet of Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji!

Thank you for the wonderful video. I was very fond of this saying when Pujya Sri Swamiji said in 2007 (I think 2007 New Year message) and started to follow in this path. Now again Pujya Sri Swamiji is reminding me. Beautiful explanation by Putuji about inner world and external world and correlating with today’s MMS video.

Powerful MMS. “Pray as if everything depends on God, Work as if everything depends on You”. Very very profound. Appaji, on numerous occassions, when you were speaking about Guru Seva, you have said the same thing. So many times, I have witnessed this in my life. Putting in the best foot forward and putting in more than 100% efforts towards any task is what we ought to do. Though the instigation for doing that task comes from You, you leave it to us to explore various ways of putting in the required effort. This is not all, once we are done with the task, all we can do is leaving the result to Him. Conditioning our minds to the fact that the result (either good or bad) is solely His discretion, makes it easy for us to accept the not-so-desitable result with grace and poise. Here again, the not-so-desirable result has its purpose, it is teaching us to strive harder with much more focus, it is a lesson that we have to remember. But, pray, we have to!!
To state the most simple example of this miracle, my sister was writing her GRE and she was not at all confident about what she studied, but I have to admit, she had put in her best efforts (though, even today she says that she put in lesser effort than she could have :-)). She steps into her exam center and the words she spoke as she went in were “I am putting in my best efforts and rest I leave it to God”. Three hours later, when she steps out, she shouts out that she scored a 1400 score (very good result to get an admission into Top grad schools in US). As she and I walked down the stairs, she was in daze and she said “I dont know what that invisible force was that made me choose correct answers to the questions that I was not sure about”. we concluded, it had to be divinity that was with her all through the exam that helped her achieve what she wanted.
This is just one of the many incidents that my family and I have witnessed in so many years and this MMS only re-instates our faith in prayer and the power of efforts.
Thank You Appaji for being with my sister that day and for all the grace you have been showering upon my family and me.
Puttuji, your informative explanation educates me about Vedanta in so such an easy way, that, it remains with me always.

    • Archana Penukonda on August 9, 2012 at 1:42 am

Jaya Guru Datta! This has been one of my favorite sayings for a few years now. It’s just the perfect recipe for spiritual and material success. Pujya Appaji said during Pujya Bala Swamiji’s Chaturmasya Ramayana discourse that only the timid leave things to destiny. In this message, Appaji is telling us that we need to work hard and not leave things to destiny. This message is also so nicely applicable to our work place as noted in Puttuji’s commentary. Working hard, taking ownership, having accountability will also get us ahead at the work place too.

I love Puttuji’s opening commentary about how this sookti combines Bhakti Yoga and Karma Yoga. The Yogi of all yogis, our Datta Sadguru alone is capable to condensing everything in to one sentence as well as doing the opposite – breaking complex topics down to easily consumable sooktis that we all can understand.

This one sookti alone can take us a long way in our life. If we pray to Appaji like everything depends on Him, Appaji will surely protect us. Pujya Appaji said “If you love and believe Swamiji, then definitely Swamiji will help you. I am always with you. This is the truth.” If we pray to Swamiji with full love and surrender, I think we’ll be able see Him in a physical form, wherever we are.

Thank You for the beautiful video and the enlightening commentary, Puttuji! Obeisances to the Holy Lotus Feet of Pujya Appaji!
