  1. Self-enquiry : Who am I?

Am the flame burning the wick embedded in moulded wax. Am needed only in the darkness. When the lights’re on, am just blown off. I live in the darkness. When light comes in, I am no more. At the mercy of the wax, wick & wind, what can I achieve in this hopeless life? L

Think.. Think.. Is there a better answer to – Who am I ?

Am the infinite energy.. Agni, that brings life into this universe. Am not limited by the wax, wick or wind. Am the energy that makes them exist. When the wax melts away, when the wick burns out, am so happy to find my oneness with the infinite radiance of Bhaskaraya. I feel liberated. I find my fulfilment in my identification. Empowered by such energy, there is nothing that I can’t achieve J

Pranams Appaji ! Thanks a million for revealing the secret of your infinite energy. You role model how much one can achieve in a life time through the practice of self-enquiry. We follow you. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji. Thank you for this thought provoking video. Each day, I try to take at least a few minutes to think about God. Sometimes, daily prayers can become routine and it helps to sit and reflect not only on their meaning, but on why I take the time to chant them and my relationship and history with a particular aspect of the diety. I keep a Kriya Yoga journal and that helps with reflection as well on what Sri Swamiji is teaching me, as does thinking about dreams and Swamiji’s talks. These MMS’s have helped me engage in more self-reflection about my actions or thoughts. However, I have to admit, I haven’t thought about Self-Enquiry as a tool for “achievement.” Who am I? Who am I? I like that the I is taken out of Puttugam’s message and that the statements begin with just “am.” Am the water, Am the sun, Am the earth and the stars, Am the breezes….and am all things….Thank you for guiding us to achieve this level of consciousness….

‘Nuvvu nene’ – said Sadgurudeva. I did not understand. How could that be? He is God. I am this insignificant minute imperfect fool. Then I remembered the thought flash that had occurred decades ago. ‘S U R I’ – (Yes, you are I.) – One last time before getting married, this serious doubt occurred one more time in my mind whether I was doing the right thing in getting married to this person, with whom every meeting ended in a nasty argument. Then this interpretation of his name flashed across my mind. I decided to go ahead with it come what may. After much turbulence the journey has now become smooth thanks to Sadgurudeva’s intervention. One of my first verbally expressed prayers to Swamiji was to bless me with the experience of the declaration in the Mangalam composed by him – ‘Ella roopu taanaina guruve mangalam’ – ‘Every form that is perceived is the form of the Guru. May he flourish!’ This clearly proves the oneness of Guru, God, and the entire Creation. Swamiji, with infinite compassion, nodded. I know. It takes time. Jaya Guru Datta

    Jai Guru Datta,
we are conciousness. To reflect is to conciosly become aware of something. It means to open the awareness and see what is there for it´s own sake, leaving all preoccupations and judgements aside. We do this with the light of our self. The self just is – the self has all qualities and is without qualities. If we reflect on the self we learn to use the light of our self or better the light of our self finds his way to our dreamy mind and we don´t see the tapestry of our preoccupations and judgements but we actually just see. From there we can go anywhere because we are rooted in complete freedom.
Thank you dear Swamiji for the daily messages you send us. I truly cherish them. It establishes such a gloriuos way to communicate with you, I´m really greatfull for this. My pranams to your holy lotusfeet. Sri Guru Datta.

    Jai Guru Datta Appaji –
During Atma Vidya Discourses in Baton Rouge, Pujya Gurudeva exhorted us to perform Self-Inquiry: ‘Koham – Who am I’… and took us on an inner journey through the 5 Karmendriyas, 5 Gnanendriyas, 4 Antah-Karanas, 5 Pranas, Pratyagatma and finally to Absolute Sat-chit-Ananda state. These extremely insightful CD’s are highly recommended(available on Yogasangeeta.org).
Despite the darkness that envelops us every night, the Glorious Sun God brings the promise of the radiant Daylight – without fail, everyday illuminating/revitalizing all Life! Similarly, as depicted beautifully in the MMS visual, the Radiance from the much needed ‘Self-Inquiry’ will illuminate our minds internally and remove the confusions/hurdles along our Spiritual path, by the Grace and guidance of the SadhGuru. By inference, if we do not indulge in ‘Self-Inquiry’ everyday, we are bound to be engulfed in the darkness/confusion.
Pranams to your Lotus Feet. Sri Guru Datta!

Jai Guru Datta! Seeing Appaji looking at the ocean, I am reminded of a message i received during music-therapy this summer: “But swimming no shoes!” Without shoes there is no personal identity any more, no “this path” and “that path”. Just one ocean with mouvement. Until there is no mouvement anymore, only ocean. Until there is no ocean also.

Diese Botschaft ist so wundervoll, Appaji! Ohne Worte. JGD Rajeshi

Jaya Guru Datta! What an impressive explanation by Putta Gam ji / Appaji. There is so much depth in these few sentences, playing around with writing ‘I’ in some sentences and leaving it away in others, just writing ‘am’. The ‘I’ is in darkness or represents darkness. Leaving it away leads to light or oneness. How beautiful! Sadgurudeva, please cleanse me so that ‘I’ stop thinking too much. It’s not even exaggerating the self-inquiry but having a monkey mind. So much vata. ‘I’ struggle a lot to reduce this. Without You, I would be drowning in my vata. So it is good to fill my mind with mantras, Your music, teachings and videos. Sri Guru Datta!

    Jai Guru Datta !!

Bhaskaraya Sadgurudeva radiates upon us the infinite flame of wisdom to make us better beings through self introspection and self inquiry. We need to open the eyes of our mind and heart and just follow Swamij’s direction. We will then realize our inner purpose and meaning for life and obtain the kind of detachment needed to cross the worldly samsara. Thank you dear Swamiji for thinking of us each and every day. We are eternally indebted to You and follow You !!

  4. Jaya Guru Datta. Dearest Mother Sri Swamiji, I have faith that little by little knowledge will come. The real knowledge is knowledge of self. I often ask myself “who am I?” and now will know to continue this practice. Is it that Bliss that I felt? Is that who I am? Is it You? Are we one in the same? I know that I am not this body. When Moses asked God for His name, in Exodus of the Hebrew Bible, He said “I am that I am”. I have wondered throughout the years what exactly this means. Maybe it is that Sachchidananda which is beyond expression in words and may only be experienced through Your Grace. Maybe this is what You are here for- to show us our true nature which is none other than You. I am just speculating and wondering so please forgive me if I have this all wrong. I will keep asking myself “who am I?” so that maybe one day I will understand. I do know that I love you. Of that I am certain. Sri Guru Datta.

    Jai Guru Datta Dear Puttuji!!

The MMS starting frame beautifully shows that the life giving energy force resides within Sadgurudeva and emanates from His Holiness and is then disseminated across the universe.
Your example of the wick gives a totally different perspective for looking at the same thing. Only you could have explained it so well.
We will follow your advice and obey Appaji to create a worthwhile life through the practice of self-enquiry Who am I ? and continuous betterment of our spiritual inside.

Jai Guru Datta dear Appaji thank you so much for your encouragement. The trials and tribulations of this Maya we chose make us weary and get us lost! Through self-inquiry we can unload the weight of our thought patterns and connect with You and the Truth. With your Grace anything is possible! Again thank you for this encouraging and sweet message ! Sri Guru Datta

  5. Jai Guru Datta, will practice every day. Hope that will find the right answer with Sadguru’s grace.

Jaya Guru Datta! Thank You, Sri Swamiji, for showing us simple, but powerful ways to get closer to Your Lotus Feet. Self inquiry is the means that great souls like Swami Vivekananda, Ramana Maharishi employed to achieve liberation. By consistent self inquiry every day, even for a short period of time each day, we begin to peel the layers of ignorance that surround us. Then, we begin to experience that we are part of the same Paramatman that every being is, that everything we see – animate and inanimate comes from Him and dissolves into Him. We’ve heard this in theory a lot of times, but experiencing it is the only way to achieving real transformation. Armed with this awareness, we can spread our wings and fly towards the Lotus Feet of Sathguru, nothing can stop us, because we will actually be flying on the wings of our Holy Master. And when the Sathguru is thus guiding us, we can of course achieve anything. Obeisance to the Holy Lotus Feet!

  6. JGD.Self enquiry,Who am I? is Aatma vicharana of every soul.It is to realise the self identity and the role behind that identity, which will pave way for self liberation from the eventual cycle of births.Once we start in Aatma vicharana others follow, like shedding of Ego,Selfishness, etc. Our APPAJI show us this in a delightful background and Saptaswarupam song, for bright spiritual future.SKPranams to His Lotus feet.SGD.

  7. True, Your Holiness, introspection once a day is minimum one must do. We do some Good deeds and commit a few mistakes every day. Better to review days activity before retiring, repent misdeeds and take a oath not to repeat mistakes. Blessing and guidance of Your Holiness are always needed to stay on right path.

    Jaya Guru Datta Puttuji,

Great MMS message. OM is the seed letter that pervades everywhere, OM is the creation of this universe. Greatest inventions and discoveries have happened since inception of this universe…. many advancements happened over centuries…. but very few have engaged in self-inquiry and discovered the joy of inner journey. Thank you Appaji for this great MMS message.

Jaya Guru Datta. The vedio showing the light rays from the Crown of Guru,is thought provoking. This MMS says about self enquiry,Who am I? and What I have done? The answer for these simple sounding questions is enough for one birth.A question about self is lie the Sun light it kills darkens the Devil inside, like wise a enquiry about the actions of self in retrospection is a cleaning process. How are not bending their heades in shame in private for their actions in Public? The absence of retrospection on our side makes us Devils. It is not the thoughtless actions but the absence any thought over the acts is dangerous.Like Sun God who is driving away the Darkness around the world spinning on a Chariot drawn by 7 Horses, Sathguru is also travelling the Land bounded by 7 seas, dispelling the darkness from the minds of People and Devotees. It is the Guru”s krupa we are able to question our self.If not we will be asking Who are you?

Appaji’s today’s MMS has got a deep inner value. Puttuji as you stated here this MMS makes us to think and think and so on. Incidentlally I remember here Appaji’s MMS 25 also saying that( Think before you talk) . Similarly think at least once a day whom Iam. That is we should come out from darkness to light. It shouldnotbelimited for certain hours like a candle. At the same time it should be like the Sun who gives a wider light for the benefit of the entire world. Appaji you have opend our eyes by this MMS. Here I remember Appaji’s words saying that The God has given this birth as Humanbeing  to do good deeds, to help the needy, toshow your ability which will be useful for others. Inother wordswe should not sit in the darkness and come out to the light. Further this MMS help us to think that when we do a job we should complete on the same day and not to postpone for the next day. If we do like that we will not get the job satisfaction. That is also Appaji is giving a lesson for us through this MMS. Therefore Appaji when you are takingso much trouble and pain for the growth of the spiritual path especially in this Kaliyuga, we as a devotee also share with you to develop your mission in all respect for which we will come out from the darkness and think daily whom Iam and do our best.  JGD.

  8. I ask myself many times ‘Who am I’. I take a deep look into my heart to find the answer. And I find always something new about me. I am a child of God. He protect me. I can see His hand in many situations, like yesterday. I like to share this little story with all of you. I lost my little bag with money, passport and a lot of cards and at that time I even don’t know about it. I came home and somebody phoned me. He told me that he found my bag. He hand my bag over to a shop nearby. Few minutes later the Owner of the shop phoned me. Everything was still there. My heart was singing: ‘Jaya Guru Datta!!!’ like a Mantra. And I began to think over this situation. Passport? Money? Identity-Card? My Identity is not in that paper. It is within the hand of God. So, no bad things happened. I ask myself. How can that be.That I am so lucky?

“Self-enquiry”!!! Beautiful explanation by Puttuji. Before bed time, it would be a good practise to analyse the activities of the entire day and group it as good or bad deeds. If it seems to be a bad deed, one should analyse why the bad deed was performed or rather the thought which provoked us to execute as action. By doing so, it keeps us aware of the nature of thoughts and deeds by us to improve ourselves and walk in the path of righteousness. By doing so, gradually one will surely have a question before him as to “why am i doing this mistake repeatedly?” and the answer will be our attachment with ourselves that is ‘me’ or ‘I’ or ego. I feel only if we can cross this layer of thought one can perceive and experience the omnipotent and omnipresent God who is within us as the power or energy behind every action by us. May almighty God bless us with the acceptance of our faults and perceive the root cause for all the faults, so that one can realise that “human without ‘I’ is Divine”. Splendid message…

The only entity you cannot lie to is your own self/conscience. And if You reside in me, oh Almighty, I cannot lie to you. This is my way of talking to myself. I sound strange to a lot of friends when I say I talk to myself, but then, this talk I have makes me realize where I was wrong, whom did I hurt, what did I do right, how angry I have been and how should I apologize or burn those invisible but unhealthy bridges. Doing this has helped me fill my gaps and get over my shortcomings. And, Sagurudeva, this is again what I owe to you. Please help me with this introsepction everyday so that I stand up to your expectations. Million thanks for declaring to me that I am not strange when I talk to myself. Jaya Guru Datta. Engage in self-enquiry ~ 2 Nov 2012

Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose in this life? How frequently do we think in these lines?? We are so engrossed in our mundane monotonous activities that we forget to understand who we are or why we are here. When we ask ourselves these questions, we begin to realise how immersed we are in the materialistic existence. We forget that we are a speck of the infinite energy and we do not tap into that energy that is limitless! We must make it a habit to spend a few minutes at least everyday so that becomes a reality check – a reminder to find the purpose of our lives and to know our Self. All this becomes possible only by the grace of Sadguru, who like the Sun, removes that darkness of ignorance in our lives. Jaya Guru Datta!!
