  1. Today is Teacher’s day, and this MMS is a well timed opportunity for some deep reflection. The greatest teacher of our lives.. our dear Gurudeva blends the elements of the vulture, the bee in a sunflower, and His peppy bhajan ‘Shri Guru Datto Jaya Guru Datto; Nithyam Me Hridi Bhati’ ( Album – Nada Chintana, Track 3 ), to make this a true learning experience.

Swami Dattatreya is the first Guru.. and it is very apt to invoke Him on Teacher’s Day. Datta had 24 Gurus.. the honeybee was one of them. Here is what Datta says he learnt from honeybees: “Like the honeybee, Guru flies from flower to flower and, without hurting them, draws honey. So too, a student of spirituality should study everything in the scriptures and draw into his heart that which is essential for his spiritual practice”. The important idea here, is the emphasis on practice.. study everything, but retain what is essential for practice.. because practice makes a man perfect.

‘Learning’ is ‘knowing’ transformed into ‘doing’. The teachers we resepctfully remember today are those who shaped our minds, our values and our behaviors.. because they got us to touch, feel & practice what they preached. What we remember of our teachers is their teaching.. the teaching that we cared to practice, internalize and leverage in daily life. You can see ten videos, and read ten books on how to make good coffee. But your learning begins only when you experience making coffee yourself. So, His Holiness says Experience alone is the true teacher .. so true!

That bird – the demi-god vulture ‘Jatayu’ – chose to experience the joy of chanting Rama Nama, even in the painful final moments of his life. And Rama did come, in time to help Jatayu attain moksha. Likewise, when the sunflower blossomed, the bees smelt that nectar and flew in to draw the honey. When the flower was ready, the bee came. So too, when a student is ready for spiritual practice the Teacher or Guru will find him, and initiate the student into the spiritual path. From there on, the student has to walk in the path shown by the Guru, into his inner realm, towards self-realization. That sadhana, that experience alone is his true teacher.

Does a new born baby receive a formal introduction to her mother ? When God gave a baby her mother, did He also attach an instruction manual on how to get the best out of mom ? A child makes sense of her mother by the warmth, love and affection she experiences in her bosom. So it is with the Guru. A disciple makes sense of His Guru through his experiences at the Masters Feet.. like each one of us have experienced with our Gurudeva. We are so fortunate to have your grace, Sathguru! Thank you for a life time of teaching. We know you have high expectations of us.. and we have fallen short of them. Please forgive our pranks, and continue to inspire us from within towards our self-realization. We pledge to follow your words, in our sadhana every day.

Dear Sathguru, The world may remember its teachers once in a year.. on 5th Sept – like it does today. We don’t need that reminder.. because we experience your loving presence every moment in our hearts. For students in the Sathguru’s School of Spirituality, every day is Teachers Day!
With respectful pranams at your holy feet. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji.

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji! Happy Teacher’s Day! And my deepest gratitude for all you have taught me and continue to teach me! Seeing You in white today is a reminder of the opportunity of deep spiritual experience You offer us through Your Datta Kriya Yoga. Only those who practice regularly can know how present You are in each session, how You direct and guide each moment of sadhana. When You say that experience is the best teacher it is a great reminder that as we practice–taking that one step towards Guru–Guru takes a hundred towards us. Datta Kriya Yoga is a gift beyond measure!

Experience we make everytime, the whole day. We can use them or not. I try to understand the information which is in every experience. I know also, that Swamiji is sending me different experiences, that I can learn what I should learn. But sometimes I don’t understand really, what I should learn in a special situation. Then I ask Swamiji in my inner and wait. He will show me that, what is important to learn. May be, that experience is the most important, but for me the Guru is more important. Only with His help I can understand all the diffrent information in my situations. Thank you, Swamiji!

Though we go through this teaching all the time we do not get lessons unless it comes from a Sadguru like Swamiji, who makes it happen.

    • on September 5, 2012 at 9:37 am

    Jaya Guru Hanuman,

Thank you Puttugamji for helping us understand the words of the master. Wish you a very happy teachers day. Through your explanations you take us on a journey in helping us understand each and every MMS.

Our compassionate Sadgurudeva gives us so many experiences. Unfortunately this tamo guna makes us forget and look for new ones. Below is an excerpt from Swamiji’s speech about ‘Experiences’ and on how to hold him tightly like ‘Kapi Musti’ –

“Lots of small miracles you experience with Swamiji. If you understand his miracles, then you understand the greatness of the Sadguru. You have to take these small miracles seriously. Only then you will understand his glory. Each second you must be alert to observe, to analyze and to understand these small miracles that occur. They may appear as tamasha, frivolous or as jokes. They are not. You cannot neglect or ignore any one of them. You simply cannot disregard them. It may be only for a couple of seconds that such experiences occur, but it is something very serious. What are these 2 second miracles? I will give you an example. You will think, ‘Today I want to give this present to Swamiji. I have this question in my mind.’ Swamiji will suddenly say, ‘Someone has brought me this item. Please give it to me’. Along with that the answer to the question is also received. This happens many times but people forget. They do not realize that it is the Guru’s greatness. They forget and ignorance covers their mind again and again. It is not good.

You must record such instances and document them. You must put your experiences in words. It helps others. Do not ever think that such experiences are too small and trivial. They are too full of meaning. In those couple of seconds, Swamiji reveals the powers of the guru. Don’t lose that energy. Write it down and analyze it. Then you will understand. Write it in your diary. Very small, small, tiny tiny miracles. But they are not really small. They all add up to a very big miracle and a profound understanding of the nature of the guru. You must record them, remember them, and read them again and again. Only then you will understand. You will have a question in your mind. You open facebook and find your answer there. You are shocked. At once write it down in your diary with the date and the exact experience. Collect all such small experiences. All these small miracles will add up to a big miracle. Don’t waste Sadguru’s glory. If you do, your ignorance will increase. You will have a downfall. It is guru droha, a dishonor to the guru. It is all scientific. Don’t take these events lightly. Don’t laugh it off. You must get goosebumps (horripilation) when these occur. You must become enlightened by these experiences.”

Humble prostrations to the lotus feet of Sri Swamiji

Experience alone is the true teacher. Who is teaching there? My feeling is that Sri Sadgurudeva is teaching me in every instant of my life. i can not imagine Sri Sadgurudeva separated from anything and anybody. He is everywhere at any moment. He is watching everything closely – also what i do. Also all my shortcomings. And still He is holding me in His hands with such a great love and eternal patience. He protects me and gives me the right climate to grow. And step for step He gives me new challenges. Every step brings me more freedom. Freedom in mind and freedom in acting.

JGD! Sadgurudeva, I thank you for blessing me to transform from a wannabe sadhaka to one who practices dharma in ‘reality’. As You have said so aptly: better a gram of practice than one ton of theory. And: you can’t satisfy your (spiritual) hunger by merely reading the menu… And I love Nada Chintana album. It’s so powerful even i could notice the special energy of it. SGD!

Jaya Guru Datta dear Swamiji – I am so grateful that my yearning for meeting “my Master” in this life was heard by you and you took me under your shelter to guide and teach me. Lacking often of discipline which gives me also a bad conscience, after having read this MMS and your comment, I decided strongly to resolve to practice more discipline in my sadhana which alone can bring me the essential teachings on my path to self-realisation.
Thank you very much, Appaji, for waking me up ! – Happy teacher’s day to you ! Om namo hanumate namaha

Puttuji explanation aptly says, in the school of spirituality everyday is a teacher’s day.
We all learn by experiences and Pujya Gurudeva make us go through different situation for us to learn from experiences. The best part is, every moment with our beloved Appaji is experience for lifetime to cherish. Thank you Appaji for such experiences in our life. I pray to the lotus feet of pujya gurudeva to bless us with experiences that teaches towards self-realization.

    • on September 6, 2012 at 6:31 am

Experience is the true teacher, indeed. It firsts test you and then teaches you. Experience also teaches us that success depends on the character than on intellect or fortune. It is Gurudeva’s method of teaching us. He allows us to take risks, make mistakes, bruise and skin ourselves and then at the end of it all, we have learnt a difficult lesson and that too, experiencing it in every intricate detail. It is the absolute truth and the most blatant truth. It is important though, to keep our patience, because, we may not need the lesson that somebody else needs and vice-versa.
On this special Teacher’s Day, oh Gurudeva, please bestow upon us the capability to see and comprehend the knowledge that we need to take us closer to you. Help us see the righteous and dharmic path, so that we are always re-discovering ourselves and brightening ourselves. JGD!! Happy Teacher’s Day 🙂

On this Teacher’s Day, HIS Holiness has given us a wonderful, meaningful commentary on the
Experiences and how we should practice for a successful day to day living. With the spontaneous
chanting and invoking of Dattatreya’s name, each day blossoms for me with a new hope of survival and combating the struggles. Experience is the greatest Teacher and if we only would know how to apply for a successful mission. It is not an exaggeration if i say not a single day
passes for me without a Teaching or learning of a moral lesson ,experience , a moment of
success in on going activity. Pranamams to His Holy feet.

JGD it is one aspect of the greatness of sri swamiji, that He teaches by experience, on all levels, in all dimensions. sometimes it is said that life itself teaches us, that whatever we experience in our life is but a lesson on our way. for me it expresses the same fundamental essence: that beyond life and all experiences works that great universal Divine intelligence, guiding and teaching us as our beloved sadguru.
