  1. Benevolence was in Mahabali’s genes. He was proud of his giving. He had conquered all the 3 worlds. When Devas requested Vishnu to restore the Heavens to their control, Vishnu, in the form of Vamana – The Dwarf, asked Mahabali for just 3 steps of land. Mahabali’s Guru Sukracharya smelt the plot & asked him to refuse. But Mahabali didn’t. The lure of the benevolence tendency was so much, he agreed. Vamana then became so big, that in 2 steps he measured the earth, its underworld & the heavens. Mahabali offered his own head for the third step. The Lord granted him moksha for his humility.
If only Mahabali had listened to his Guru, He could have ruled for longer. But his mind was so influenced by his past tendencies (vasanas), that he could not.
    Pranams Sathguru!
We’ll engage in selfless seva at your lotus feet, so that we wash away our past negative tendencies & start accumulating positive tendencies.. for our own good. Jaya Guru Datta. Your Puttuji

Jaya Guru Datta! Mahabali was known for his benevolence, and so when his guru Shukraya warned him not to agree to Vamana’s request, he didn’t listen. So many times as devotees, we get an order from Sri Swamiji and we don’t listen, but instead we think we understand the situation better than He. Oh the confusion that follows! We must never question His directions, even if to us they seem to go against our ambitions or understandings of a situation. His vision is far greater than our own. Sri Guru Datta!

JGD.A story I read long back. Two friends in a city one is after materialist world often visits pleasure houses. The other a deeply religious spends in temple going etc.one day they change their ways to find the experience. The Religious friend goes to the pleasure house. While there he engrosses himself the Enjoyment his friend getting in the Temple.Other friend in the temple is eager to get out and find what is happening with his friend in the pleasure house.
Moral. It is the tendency that makes or breaks your life.

SATHA KOTI PRANAMAS TO LOTUS FEET OF SADGURU DEVA.

  3. Jaya Guru Datta. It is my belief that the few good inborn tendencies I have brought me to Sri Swamiji. I pray that my many bad inborn tendencies will be transformed through such a blessed association. Please take my ignorance and egotism. My judgmental ways and my fault finding in others. My anger and my self-righteousness. Take it all. They cannot taint the pure Creator, but a lowly person such as myself will be trapped in this world with such defects. Only Sri Swamiji who is Lord Shiva and Mother Goddess can save me from these inborn tendencies. Sri Guru Datta.

Jaya Guru Datta! MMS on Jan 25th said “Past tendencies shaped the present interests and attitudes in life”. Our inborn tendencies may be slave to the senses, that’s why our Sathguru is digging deep down into our psyche to cleanse our mind and fill it with positive thoughts. By following the Sathguru’s guidance right now, we will uplift the base tendencies in our future as well as in next births. Slowly, we’ll make progress by building on the moral and spiritual foundation that our Sathguru is laying for us. We will then be able to liberate ourselves one day and fly away in to the abode of His Lotus Feet! Perhaps, the Nama Sankeerta that Swamiji has us do is to cleanse the inborn base tendencies. Perhaps, witnessing the Pujas and listening to His discourses and His healing music build positive tendencies in us. But, why worry about the technicalities? All we need to do is to follow the master. Thank You for keeping it so simple for us, Swamiji! Obeisances at the Holy Lotus Feet!

“A dog rolls around in ash and comfortably falls asleep. It dreams. Suddenly in the dream it gets enlightenment. It wakes up and wants to excitedly share its spiritual knowledge with other dogs. But the moment it shakes its body to get rid of the ash, it forgets everything. Such is the case with all of you. You have listened to all these wise words. The moment you get up from here you would have forgotten everything that I have spoken about.”
We should remember all the words of Sadgurdeva, follow them without a second thought and do His Holiness proud. !!

In today’s MMS, Appaji has linked the word ( Tendency) with our mind , since the mind has got an important role in our life. The story of Mahabali is a clear evidence for the same as Puttuji you have explained here. Mahabali has got a tendency of benevolence and that to he gives in proud. So naturally his mind is always tuned in such a way and that is already in his blood. Hence nobody can change his tendency or decision . From this we can understand that in what ever way our mind is set, we will act or do anything in that manner only which no body can change it. Therefore Appaji is giving a warning here, that we should be very careful when we set or tune our mind. This is because in this Kaliyuga , we are more attracted in worldly pleasures and also involve in unwanted desires, which will take us in a wrong path in due course. Therefore to prevent this the only way is to follow through a spiritual path with the help of our Sadguru. Hence we should follow His words and teachings strictly, sothat our mind will be controlled and tuned in such a way and will not involve in unwanted worldly pleasures and desires. Here I recollect Appaji’s MMS 248 and as per that the first step in our life is to act immediately as per His any order or commands with out a second thoughts. That is the real Guru Seva. By practicing like this we will not get any confusion or disturbance in our life or for our mind. The Bhajan in key board Jaya– jaya–vani– Sarswathi is very apt for this MSG since the Goddess Sarawathi is giving us knowledge and it is our duty to use it in the right way. JGD.

Jai Guru Datta, we are fortunate that we have a loving presence of Swami Ji in our life. We are very small. Our inborn tendencies have brought us in your protection. You are shaping our life by giving us guidance day in and day out. Please grant us Sadbudhi that we follow you in our sleep and wakefulness and please change our tendencies from negative to positive. We surrender at your lotus feet. Please transform us. Koti Koti pranam Sadguru.

By performing actions selflessly one can be free from its results. But here the message says actions or thoughts are governed by in born tendencies. Who can correct these in born tendencies? Its only saints like Sriswamiji. The ego in man is responsible for him to feel that he can get anything done through his efforts, little realising that the activities of every individual are governed by the approval given by an unseen force. The vanity in him also makes him claim superiority over others. If both these are shed, he will come to know the superior powers of God and seeks God’s guidance at each and every stage. Hence no one should develop the attitude of taking pride in his success. By developing detachment from the works we perform probably we can better our in born tendencies. JGD.

    • Sarumati on February 9, 2013 at 1:46 pm

This story of Mahabali reminds me of the fact that even good tendencies may turn towards ourselves,
if they stir bad tendencies in us like pride, self-esteem, haughtiness etc.

The trick is, we don`t realize them that easily. The good trait can make fun of us, it fools us,
if we are not totally selfless.

So, self-forgetfulness and listening to the one, who knows it best, are the best remedies.

Living on our own, here in Western world, hearing the good advice of our Sadguru
by internet and on special “life occasions”,
we also have to rely on our inner voice, our heart and our good common sense in every day life.
This is another situation as in Mahabali`s times.

So, I think, we have to learn to take over a sense of responsibility for ourselves.
This is a great challenge and not always easy. We all need Sri Swamiji`s grace.

    Jaya Guru Datta,
I have a free will – since humans can choose and take decisions. I want to make right decisions, according to dharma. Dear Datta, let me be strong and focused. With Guru’s grace I will work on accumulating habitual tendencies which are making positive patterns of behavior in the future.
Oh Lord, please take me by Your hand and walk with me. I have faith in You.
    Sri Guru Datta

Jaya Guru Datta! Yes, we are driven by our past tendencies, but with Sadgurudeva’s grace, we can wipe out our sins, face our karma with strength and follow dharma in order to inherit good qualities in next life. But may I not indulge in the thought that not following Appaji’s advice still may result in something good. Sri Guru Datta!

    JGD Appaji
Because of the past merits we have found our Sadguru.. inspite of our inner enemies, in born negative tendencies we have found Him.. We need to hold on to His feet firmly and follow His teachings, listen to His music constantly…all the inner enemies, negative tendencies will be forced to disappear one day.

Inborn tendencies are the impressions accumulated as imprints at sub-conscious level. This is the reason why we react impulsively sometimes and we are surprised at our own behaviour. This is because of our imprints. The way we think is again because of these imprints. We need to be careful in presence of holy people and holy places while we react because this one need to be very careful in action else will surely land up in troubles like Puttu Gamji has explained with an illustration. Beautiful elaboration of this MMS. May lord bless us all to overcome our inborn tendency and develop positive energy with in us.

  4. Going back adn trying to catch up on these MMS series!
This is such a wonderful message!
I, from the bottom of my heart, ( and i think and truly believe that Swwamiji knows my heart) hope that my tendencies are toward the Divine! and will continue towards the Divine, no matter what. No matter what my Ego drives me to do in this crazy world. . No Matter what. i have oft times wondered why I have fallen into such a gorious family as Sri Swamiji”s! and the only answer i can come up with is tht perhaps I did something really good (past tendencies in past live(s ) Love you Swamiji …Jai Guru Datta!
