  1. Those obstacles now look like our friends, not foes! They’re not an impediment to our inner progress in devotion. They serve us by purifying & protecting us. Jai Gurudev! What a beautiful new perspective !

Those steps in the picturesque landscape are tough to climb. To a novice they look like obstacles. But to a wellness conscious person, they enhance his fitness.. as long as he is persistent in climbing step by step.

Those stones seem to obstruct the easy flow of water. Actually they filter all of its suspended impurities.. as long as the water is willing to give up the suspended matter, in its determination to flow towards its ocean.

Pranams Dattaswaroopa Gurudeva ! In serving your mission with steadfast devotion, we’ll flow through those obstacles, happily shedding all our impure karma. That testing journey to fulfilment may be painful, but certainly fruitful, as it was for Meera or Prahlad. We’re fortunate to follow you. Jaya Guru Datta, Your Puttuji.

It is ego that seeks success in the service to Guru. I have been told that trying is training. The results are not significant. It is not good to expect success. It is not good to anticipate praise. It is not good to be attached to the work. It is good to be flexible and ready to switch from one job to another at a moment’s notice. It is good not to hog the responsibilities but to share them willingly with others as commanded. Spiritual sadhana is all about giving up the ego. If in the service of guru the ego is kept well-fed, it defeats the purpose. Guru keeps placing obstacles in the path. Guru gives impossible tasks and impossible deadlines; yet, gives the talent and the time to the disciple who is willing to try. Guru sometimes does not communicate. He leaves one guessing whether to proceed or not with the task at hand. He causes confusion regarding priorities. It is best to surrender everything to his decision, his timeline, and his preference. He is the doer after all. Time sorts everything out, I have found. Guru has no favorites. It is useless trying to win special favors by competing against others. Jaya Guru Datta

Jaya Guru Datta, Swamiji, I have experienced the obstacles and confusions that God and Guru can create. In the beginning, sometimes I would react with anger and frustration and sometimes with resignation and depression. But every time I have encountered an obstacle placed truly in my path by Swamiji, once I have contemplated it and prayed to learn its lesson, an insight has come and those negative emotions have changed to gratitude. You have always guided me in ways that have been for my greatest good. That was a hard lesson for me to learn since I am so willful, but it is true.
    Sri Guru Datta!

  2. Jai Guru Datta Swamiji. I agree with you. Every time thinking why only we are suffering but it’s clarifying our bad things.

Why would a compassionate Guru place obstacles on our path? To me it is unthinkable. Whatever he does is done with love, for our own growth spiritually and morally. What are such obstacles that people face in the service of guru? Sure, I have missed flights and have arrived late at Mysore. But the feeling always is, well, it is always good. He knows what is best. Sure, some pending projects remain pending for months and years. I guess it is not the right time yet, for them to get completed. Why is my mind going blank when I try to recollect if there have been any obstacles in the path of my service to guru? Perhaps it is because, I do not think that I am serving my guru. It is always that He is serving me, in so many different ways, creating opportunities for me to learn, grow, and develop in a variety of important ways. What power or talent do I possess to serve guru? Whatever exists, is given by him, and he is free to take it away any moment. He is giving boarding, lodging & free lessons all the time. I am only filled with gratitude. I have no complaints about any obstacles. Jaya Guru Datta

Jai Guru Datta! “Everything that happens to us is for our good” is one of the stories in “God Word”. This is not easy to accept when we face obstacles and difficulties. And finally it is just one of the sculptor’s blows that brings us nearer to Him. It is “just” our thinking and feeling about the situation that makes it difficult. Without all this “mind stuff” there are simply things to do, sometimes not the way we thought, but another way opens up. His helping hand is always there.

    Thank you Sri Swamiji!
From this point of view these obstacles get totally another dimension:
They are means which in fact have the opposite effect as it seems for many of us at the moment.
Instead of rejecting us or closing ways they open the door for a positive development!
I very much hope i will remember these lines while facing the next obstacles!

Jaya Guru Datta Appaji. The opening of this MMS itself is ‘ADHURS’ – the wonderful synch on the music and the video splashing water!!! The evergreen composition – Gauri Taaye – makes a perfect combo for this treat. Another uniqueness in this one is that, this is one of the very very few MMS’ that covers Appaji’s footage in action. We have seen MMS’ with Appaji’s video of talking the sookti, but not an action video in the MMS. Underatking so many obstacles Swamiji has descended from Vaikuntha – to take care of all His children. He doesnt have to, if He didnt want to. The particular service that He took on Himself, expressed as an instruction by Mata Sri Jayalakashmi is an epitome to show the deepest meaning of this MMS. As always, Appaji is walking the talk – how many ever obstacles/hardships, He is steadfast on His job which is a service. I liked this MMS the most Appaji….

Jaya Guru Datta! There’s no doubt that every obstacle I faced in understanding and following Sri Swamiji has been a learning experience for me. The lessons are varied – to be humble, to examine my own behavior, to be accommodating of others, to not expect everyone to understand, to not be selfish etc. In fact, in anything I’m given the opportunity to do, I’m not serving the Sathguru at all, there is nothing I can do for the Sathguru. Whatever our Sathguru terms as service to Him, is in fact Him serving all His children. What can we offer to the creator? What can we offer to the Sathguru who carries the entire creation in Him (Guru madhye sthitam vishwam – Guru Gita)? All that we call service to the Guru are opportunities for us to cleanse our minds and our lives and focus on spirituality. Any obstacles thereof are part of the experience in cleansing us of our egos, confusions, problems etc. Sri Swamiji is an embodiment of love, there’s no room for even neglect from our Sathguru, let alone problems. We are too limited in our understanding to see the grand scheme of our Datta Sathguru. May be be blessed with more and more opportunities to be with and serve the Master’s mission. Obeisance to the Holy Lotus Feet!

Jaya Guru Datta! Dear Sadgurudeva, from my own experience, I can emphasize how true this is. You have showered so much love and blessings on me. I am very, very fortunate to be Your servant. Yet I know that I have only mastered the full lesson when I’m not afraid of having any obstacles truly (!) by 100%, as well as not looking out anymore for Your appreciation in the back corner of my mind. Anyway, even at this inferior stage, it is wonderful to serve You. Please forgive my laziness and my ego sometimes. Pranams to Sadgurudeva and to Puttu Gam for the beautiful analogy with the stairs in the video. Sri Guru Datta!

When Appaji gives His devotees an assignment, it comes with obstacles which are tests of character and devotion. As we learn the ways of Sadguru and surrender to Him, we begin to realize our true hidden potential which would have remained dormant all our lives. Thank You, Appaji, for giving true meaning to our lives.

This MMS is so true from our Sadgurudeva. Every time we have come to a dead end in the activity/seva we have envisaged to do for our Sadgurudeva or for the Lord, we are bereft of ideas and we put up our hands to the Sadgurudeva and the Lord. We develop some internal strength thereafter and acheive what we want to. It is indeed HID Blessings and protection which takes care of all of us. Jaya Guru Datta.

  5. Jaya Guru Datta. Dearest Mother Sri Swamiji, I pray for the strength and knowledge to face these obstacles successfully. Please forgive me for my complaints and groans and help me to become a better person. Let me see these obstacles as true teachers and real friends who show me my faults so that I can improve. I love You so much but it isn’t yet strong enough. Let this love grow and grow so I always see You in the entirety of Your creation…. Even supposed “enemies.” I will know that my love for You has fully blossomed when I see every challenge as a gift and an opportunity to serve You, which is really only a benefit to myself as You have no need for my service. I see this, but I forget at times. Let me remember that all is a gift from You my beloved Satgurudeva. I need Your purification and protection, Mother Swamiji. Sri Guru Datta.

Following Sadguru for the past twenty five years of my human life (i’m 27 yo) has been very overwhelming and filled with wisdom. Over the past year and some months I’ve had the opportunity to become a pundits’ assistant and it is during this period I have been faced with the most daunting task when it comes to overcoming obstacles. They came in many forms; thoughts, words and deeds and still they continue and honestly at times I have failed…… However, with Appaji’s blessings and grace I’m able pick myself up and dust myself off and continue with the journey bearing in mind the destination. I know too at every point Appaji is with us guiding us and will continue to do so. He is also doing us a favor of bearing our sins. So we must be grateful to be a member in his flock. Thank you Appaji. Thank You. I beg that the Gods continue to grant you health and strength so that you can continue to guide us. We want nothing but that and these little bites of wisdom on a daily basis is all we need. Om Namo Hanumate Namaha!!!

We all are happy to say every problem of all devoties was solving with the grace of SRI SWAMIJI and i will pray the GOD to provide the more ENERGY and SHAKTHI to SWAMIJI for giving ashirvads and saving the poor people who cannot eat properly for one time in a day.

    Jai Guru Datta

Swamiji is as taught in a previous MMS both Mother and Father for us. As a Mother HE is always loving and protecting us. In this MMS HE is the Father who pushes us, tests us, trains us, purifies us so that we become better able to face the world and give up ego, desire, and our dust in the progress towards self-realization. In this MMS, Swamiji is our Father – placing obstacles to remove our karma. Actually it is Appaji who also removes the obstacles and karma. We just go through the motions. The moral is that we do not need to worry. We just need to keep performing what He intends us to do. Gurudeva is taking care of everything. Aappaji is the Biggest Mathematician !! We cannot understand the realm and plane and dimension of SWAMIJI’S Mathematics and nor should we try to. We need to simply submit ourselves as literals and variables wherever needed.

Sri Jayalakshmi mathre namah !! Sri Guru Datta Hanuman ki Jai !! Om Namo Hanumathe Namaha !!

What a beautiful way to remind us about our compassionate Guru? Yes, Appaji. I have been through this many a times. There were times when my ego and pride got better of me and made me commit the same mistakes so many times (would a mistake that is repeated still be a mistake?). I dont know why I used to repeat them, but today after I have gotten better of my ego, I know, my repeat mistakes were only helping me heal and make me better. In this process, I was helping Him to mold me. Thank You Sadgurudeva. Believing in Dattatreya and surrendering to HIm have always been beneficial. I can never ever leave His pada sannidhi 🙂 JAya Guru Datta.

Obstacles faced in service of God ~ 27 Oct 2012

We always wonder why we face so many difficulties when were trying to do some noble work. The obstacles try our patience and perseverance. They also strike our ego very strongly at times. This is seen very often when we are trying to perform some task entrusted by our Guru. Guru’s ways are mysterious. He first blesses us with opportunity to serve Him. He then blesses us with more obstacles in the path – only to help us get rid of our Karma, our sins! He makes us go through these hardships to prevent something more catastrophic that only he can foresee. The more effort, dedication and devotion we put into His work, the more we are burning away our sins! Sadguru gives the courage and strength to over come these obstacles. We must be determined enough to complete the work we have taken up. At the end of the process, we only come out cleaner and stronger. As long as we do not have a sense of doer-ship and submit everything to the Guru, no obstacle is too big! When we begin to think that we are responsible for all that is happening, we stumble. Then these obstacles seems like mountains that have blocked our path! We must humbly pray to Sadguru for strength to over come all obstacles and complete our role-play here! The wonderful healing music based on ‘Gauri Taye’ gives a feeling of reassurance of Sadguru watching over us at all times! Jaya Guru Datta

    • on October 28, 2012 at 12:28 pm

IT is always refreshing to find that those obstacles showing on the path have actually been a help and have prevented unwanted circumstances from occurring. They can seem small in the moment, such as not being able to proceed in a webform because something is missing. I find these are the moments for re-evaluating what else is possible? Seeming bigger obstacles offer the opportunity for surrender and developing patience knowing all is His leela. I cannot know why this is happening but I must Trust. Jaya Guru Datta

All these obstacles in our life are the one created by us due our ego. Pujya Guru Deva like a sculptor chisels our bad ego to make us know our true inner self. Thanks you Appaji for this great MMS video. I pray to Pujya Guru Deva to give endurance to face these obstacles with positive attitude.

A very nice MMS, Appaji has given Puttuji with your good explanation. Here I  remember when you go to Sabari mala to have a Dharsan  of Lord Ayappa, you have to face lot of obstacles in the path. That is you have to climbe the hills by walk only through the forest and in between lot of difficulties will be there because of the condition of the path and etc. But when we reach the temple it will be very nice and the surroundings will be full of devotees waiting for the Dharsan  of Lord Ayappa who fulfill our all desires. From this we should realize to reach or to know  the God lot of obstacles to be faced in between that. The photography is an example for this. Similarly when we follow our Sadguru , He will also test you in so many ways because He is an incarnationof Lord Datta Himself and watch whether we are fit for the spiritual path. Therefore Appaji we follow your words and teachings strictly for the growth of the spiritual path and bless us to cross all the obstacles arriving in between that because this is Kaliyuga.    JGD.

Very true… God always blesses with the best to His devotees. If work is done successfully, we complete and forget it. But obstacles initially always disappoint us, but it is always the obstacles that make us search thousand ways to overcome the obstacle and complete the work successfully. It is the determination to complete the service, that makes us more strong and gradually obstacles seems to be the right one for that point of time. This makes us feel and experience the grace of Almighty, because it is surely only to purify and protect the devotee. May Lord bless us all with strong determined mind and energy to serve Him always.

Obstacles faced in service of God ~ 27 Oct 2012

In the spiritual path one must be prepared to meet with hundreds of failures, innumerable difficulties and obstacles. In the beginning it may appear to be very hard, thorny, precipitous, and slippery. These obstacles are for strengthening the aspirants and their rapid spiritual growth. Guru gives trials, side by side HE also gives strength, patience and fortitude to bear the trials. Doubts or uncertainties are great obstacles on the path of self-realization. In the process these obstacles purifies the heart and teaches one to act selflessly, without thought of gain or reward. The company of Guru will simplify our struggles.

Everyone who longs to transcend misery and obtain joy and happiness in life should sincerely practice Guru-Bhakti. Guru-Bhakti confers eternal bliss, freedom, perfection and everlasting peace. Many obstacles may come in our way, but if the focus is on Sadguru, these obstacles become trivial. This reminds me of a very popular telugu bhajan of pujya Appaji which says ” Nashtamaite Aite Kaani, Kashtamoste Vaste Raani, Dattabhistamu Unte Chaalu “. There is a similar Bhajan in Kannada too, “Barali Barali Kashtavella barali, Dayavondirali Datta Ninadu”. If difficulties come, let them come, if I face losses, no problem, it is enough if I have Datta`s grace with me.

Let us not think too much about the obstacles, instead let us focus our minds on Sadguru and come out victorious. We are all so fortunate to be in the divine guidance of pujya Appaji. Under His guidance nothing is an obstacle. Let us all serve Pujya Appaji and His mission with unconditional love and unwavering faith. Jaya Guru Datta!

    • Praveen Nidumolu on October 30, 2012 at 11:32 pm

Jaya Guru Datta Appaji – “Sweet are the uses of adversity”. We would not realize our true infinite potential if there were no obstacles along the way.
Lord Krishna tested Arjuna’s skills through some obstacles before the war of Kurukshetra. Similarly, Lord Hanuman’s strength and resolve were tested through Surasa and Vardhimainaka Parvatha (Mountain) before He landed in Lanka in search of Sita Mata. We can learn from these episodes that Obstacles serve to ‘hone’ our skills and sharpen our Focus/abilities in our Ultimate pursuit!
I kept faltering at my numerous attempts to overcome a few persistent obstacles in my life. It was not until I was willing to bare my soul to Pujya GuruDeva, face my fears, and let go of all Ownership and Doership that I was able to finally succeed. Miraculously, all it took was a uninhibited “Jai Guru Deva” uttered from the Heart with a deep sense of Self-surrender.
Forever grateful for your infinite Grace. Sri Guru Datta!

this utmost beautiful mms makes me understand something that was unclear for me since I realized that there two kinds of obstacles occurring in any task. one that shows me that it is better not pursuing what I intended to do (because it just comes from mental consideration or from ego, ambition and desire, sometimes quite nicely hidden …), sometimes indicating that the time is not right. sometimes it shows as a warning that the undertaking might be dangerous, so taking the warning seriously it protects from whatever damage my be the consequence. and often I did not understand why obstacles arised in the course of any seva I was blessed to do and where I felt very clear that it was not about giving up that task. now I know and I feel deeply grateful for the light sri swamiji is bestowing with this mms and for the protection and purification our beloved sadguru gives and gives and gives. may I become more and more worthy of Your boundless love.
