Datta Maata 49: Unity within team members is crucial for success
We yield good results only if we remain united. Let us discuss about an example now.
When Sree Rama was in search of Sita devi, Hanuamn became his devotee and Sugriva, his friend. With the friendship of Sugriva, Sree Rama had obtained a big army. Sree Rama could find out many new things by sending the army in different directions. By sending Hanuman, Sree Rama almost won over Lanka and Sita devi obtained great respite from grief. All this had happened only because of the united work of humans and the vanaras (monkeys). Everyone knows Ramayana. There can’t be anyone who does not know about it.
When Sree Rama started for victorious journey towards Lanka along with the vanaras, the ocean objected their way. For Sree Rama, who is capable of ferrying us from the samsara (cycle of births and deaths), crossing this ocean was not at all difficult. There is happiness only in doing our work/duty. Sree Rama knows this. Hence, he requested the God of ocean to make way for him. He then told Sree Rama to build a bridge across it with the help of Nala and Neela. This was the boon Sree Rama got. He further stated that he will take care of the bridge such that it does not collapse. He stood by his words. When all of us remain united, even impossible things will become possible. Many chiefs of the vanara sena helped in the construction of the bridge other than Nala and Neela. The bridge was constructed in very few days. The role of Hanuman and Vibhishana at the time of war cannot be forgotten. That war between Sree Rama and Ravana cannot be described in words. It is so amazing. They have rendered their help tremendously for Sree Rama and made him emerge victorious. With their help, entry into Lanka became very easy. In order to protect Sree Rama and Lakshmana, who remove the sufferings of the world; Garuthmanatha descended down to render his help. Indra sent his vehicle, Matali and offered his help to Sree Rama. Sage Agastya blessed him with Aditya Kavacha and indirectly propelled Sree Rama towards victory. With the help of so many people, Sree Rama destroyed the sufferings of the world and upheld dharma.
We remember a proverb – United, we remain happy. Each and every one must read Ramayana. There are many role models for us in it. Following Ramayana will make this entire world happy. This is the wonderful message that Ramayana gives us. Many neglect reading it. But, Ramayana teaches lessons for our life. IT teaches us that only if we remain united, we get good results.

Datta maata 48: Improper, evil traditions should immediately be discarded
There are many rules that are prescribed by scriptures. Out of them, many of them are our customs that have been passed to us since many generations. But, many a time, when the future generations implement such customs, there is a possibility of contradiction. At the time of calamity, our elders might have committed some mistakes knowingly. For instance, India was occupied by foreigners and they ruled her for hundreds of years. The life of people became highly disorganized. It became very difficult to follow the customs and traditions. Hence, our elders had to sacrifice certain rules of dharma and adopt temporary rules (dharma at the time of crisis). In this way there are two possibilities.
One is sacrificing the prescribed dharma and adopting newer dharma at the time of crisis. The second possibility is that the selfish minded people might have rejected the procedures followed by our elders and they would have implemented some other new procedures for their benefit. Few people might have given new customary methods to the society by the nature of their position, education etc. There is also a possibility that our customs might have become contradictory because of this.
When the fetus is unhealthy, then it must be removed from the womb of the mother. Else it will cause harm to the life of the mother. By doing so, either the mother or the family will not get the sin of killing the fetus. Similarly, if the traditions that are followed from generations together appear conflicting, then we need not follow them. We definitely do not incur sin by sacrificing them. Instead if such customs are practiced, then it might become hazardous to the health of the society at large. Hence, it is advisable to immediately leave such evil customs and traditions. However, we must never try to give up the customs just because we have some innovative idea. Similarly, we need hang on to the evil customs. We must instead try to develop affection towards the rightly followed customs. This is our duty.
With the grace of the primordial Guru Lord Datta, may all the humans get the energy to support and follow dharma. We must not convert the customs according to our whims and fancies. At the same time, when a custom is followed foolishly and we are struck with problems as a result of that, then we may act accordingly. You should not give up completely.
Assume that you are ill because of a disease. You do not even possess the energy to bathe or meditate. When you are hale and hearty but do not meditate, go to temple, ponder over spirituality, then it cannot be called dharma. It is not the timely dharma. It is sin. There is exemption only in few situations. But, we take such exemptions as per our convenience. If the climate is very cold and you suffer from body pains, you need not get up at 5 am. You may sleep till 7 am. But, when the climate is good, you sleep till 8 am. How can this be called dharma (righteousness)? It is adharma (unrighteousness)! Let us discuss later in detail.

Datta maata 47: The ultimate goal of dharma is to prevent extinction of human race.
Dharma is the same in any eon (Yuga). It does not change. The quality of dharma is to protect the human race. A unified form of hundred external procedures also cannot explain about the form of Dharma. Hence, we must forget other dharma and instead follow the dharma that protects human race. Protecting the human race is itself a dharma. Let us discuss about few signs that guide us when we are doubtful about dharma at the time of adversity.
A dharma is something that does not destroy the human race. A dharma that supports the survival of man is the best of dharmas. Remember this. Hence, killing one self or others is a greatest sin. The first and last work that dharma does is protection of the human race.
Hence, we say this is the quality of dharma. In order to follow dharma, there should be certain external practices. But, such practices must not harm the basic idea or inspiration that dharma stands for. Lord Vyasa, Adi Shankara, Jesus and others have purified the society and brought new list of regulations to be followed. They are all indeed great. There are many such stories. But none have declared that they have designed a new system of rules. If someone says so, it is really not the right one. Mahatmas have only told the people that dharma is ancient but the way of interpretation is wrong. They only taught us that we have misunderstood the dharma. Instead, they never brought new dharma or so. They brought dharma into the lives of people in various forms just like we use sugar in different dishes. In this way, they only tried to transform the way dharma is followed but they never ever changed the foundation concept of dharma.
Dharma is that which increases the humanity in people. This is the dharma of humans.
The nature of it is to wish good for every other person even if he himself has to face adversities. Humanity is that which consists of sacrificing of oneself for the well-being of others.
The dharma that you follow must not cause you to develop hatred towards anybody. You must be careful.
To understand this, we must understand well about the desires and anger that destroy the dharma. Another form of desire is selfishness. Desire can destroy dharma in a person. However anger has the potential to destroy the dharma of the entire human race. Hence, it is important to say that dharma must never foster hatred. With the grace of Datta, who is an embodiment of dharma, may you all get the energy to tread the path of Dharma!
There are many people who are talking about dharma under different names and taglines. However, they cannot change the form of dharma. No mahatma has discovered any new dharma.

Datta maata 46: God punishes purely to reform the devotee
God is very merciful but you will be punished for your sins. Everybody knows this. Nobody can escape the results of the sins committed. But, out of compassion, God delays the punishment for your sin. If he punishes you as soon as you commit the sin, then you will come to know for which mistake you have been punished and you fear to commit sin. With such fear, that sin will not be committed again. But, the bad attributes that the mind is attached to will not be vanished. There is no inner transformation at all.
For that to happen, one must know that one has committed a mistake and that it causes pain to others. From that pain, affection on others should arise. We must understand this very well. Only when such transformation happens, the bad attributes will be washed away from the mind.
Hence, God, despite having the capability, does not punish. God postpones the punishment till the person attains the sattvic nature. Even if one has attained such saintliness, God punishes. This is because the attitude to commit sin should not arise. This kind of punishment appears tough externally but it involves so much of reasoning filled with compassion. With the efforts of God again and again, human becomes eligible for good births in the future. We must remember this every now and then.
Gradually, the punishments reduce and man tries to attain divinity. This is a very lengthy process and there is no other short cut for this either. Hence, God, out of compassion punishes man for his mistakes only to absolve him of all sins. When man is completely free from sins, he attains godliness. This is the ultimate goal for humans.
Accepting the punishments given by God for our sins is the only best way. Many people blame God for punishing them. They must consider such punishments like blessings. God has mixed both punishments and blessings and created a birth. He gives a break called death in between and further gives another birth. We can take the example of a justice in a court. Just like a man is purified with the punishments given by the justice, he is purified in a similar way when God gives punishments.
We listen to three words very often – Training, Punishment and protection. The one who trains us is giving the punishment and with that we are protected too. God’s way of protection appears initially in the form of punishment. But, we must not blame him. Punishment is a form of compassion. It is the first step. Let this message ring your ears. With the grace of Datta, may you accept the God’s punishments with wisdom! I pray Goddess Basara Saraswathi to bless you.

Datta maata 45: Estimate your capabilities before making a promise.
Think of your capacity twice before you give promises. At the same time, stand by the promises you have made even at the cost of your life. In this world, the feelings of humans are greater than all the things that exist. The words that express them are equally greater. The sin accrued by not fulfilling the promise made is very higher than the merit obtained by fulfilling the promise. You must observe the greatness of the promise. Once a promise is made, it must be fulfilled. It is needless to say that a person will land in cruel hell if he gives a promise and purposefully does not even try to fulfill it. Protect your life from such cruel hill.
You must know your energy and then make promises. The promise made by having such wisdom is called ‘Vagdaana vidhi’ (procedure told by scriptures). The inability to fulfill the promise will result in the sin obtained by killing a person by stabbing the heart. Postponement in fulfilling the promise is equal to keeping others forcefully on fast.
There is also another kind of promise. It is consoling the people in distress, talking to them out of affection and sharing the knowledge selflessly. To satisfy these promises, assets or wealth is not at all required. Hence, the great Manu decided that the promise that is made with truth and affection as the base is the best kind of promise.
There is a great value for the promise. It is priceless. It is a sin to give promise and postpone fulfilling it. Not even attempting to fulfill the promise will accrue even more sin. In case, if you promise and put efforts to fulfill it but fail, then you are liable for pardon. Forgetting the promise is a first sin and not even trying to fulfill it even after one remembers it is the second sin. If there is a possibility to fulfill the promise but still one does not do it, then it is as good as stabbing a person’s heart. Postponement is like keeping others on fast. Instead of making them fast, it is better to seek pardon from them. The promise that consists of truth and affectionate language is the best promise. You must fulfill such promise even at the cost of your life. First of all, you must analyze your own capability and only then you get the eligibility to give promise. Boasting about yourself and giving promises is not good because people may get deceived by your ornaments, appearances etc. If we promise, that person will keep a hope on you that you will stand by it. Hence, promise is very important. Once given, you must fulfill it at the cost of even your life. With the grace of Datta Sadguru, may you all follow the procedures told by scriptures!
